5. Simon Dyson. European tour golfer from Fulford. The 1st of the sportsmen in this list. He once finished 6th at the US PGA championship in 2007 and is a firm local favorite. However has recently been involved in some controversy at a BMW open tournament where he is to be charged with a serious rule breach.
4. Danny Brough. Although not strictly born in York the pro rugby league star did enjoy a spell with our own York city knights. He has captained Scotland to 2 RL world cups. Currently playing for Huddersfield and has enjoyed other spells at castleford, wakefield and hull where he won the challenge cup.
3. Matthew Kilgallon. A York born professional footballer who has enjoyed spells at some of England's biggest clubs. He is a defender with 5 under 21 England caps and premiership experience. He has played for clubs such as Leeds, Sunderland, west ham, Middlesbrough and is now playing at Blackburn.
2. Jonny Bairstow. England test cricketer. Johnny went to St. Peter's school in York and has since played for 4 years in the Yorkshire side as a batsmen and a keeper. He has scored hundreds at county level however is yet to make his debut international hundred. He is currently on the ashes tour in Australia
1. Steve McLaren. A York born man with an illustrious playing and managerial football career. Steve McLaren enjoyed a successful playing career with both Hull City and Bristol City. However he is most famous for his managerial and coaxing career. He was assistant manager to Alex Ferguson during their unprecedented treble winning season in 99'. Likewise he has had 2 spells as assistant manager of England. Having gone solo as a full manager he guided Middlesbrough to the uefa cup final, which gave him the full England job. This didn't go to plan and he left the job in 2009. McLaren then moved to Holland where he won the eridivisie and many other titles with FC Twente. He is now manager of derby county.
