Visited the restaurant on the 16th of May having booked a table for 9 p.m. through the hotel we stayed at. Upon arrival our table wasnt ready as the previous diners had turned up late. We were offerred a complimentary bottle of wine and breads to keep us going! Eventually the staff set us up another table, but the food was worth the wait!!

Food was ok, seemed as though they were a little understaffed on the floor but saying that the staff were very nice! Wouldn't rush back but wasn't bad.

It's always a pleasure to go out for a meal and have plenty of space between the tables which gives you a little more privacy. Our meal, all fish, was fresh, freshly prepared, served by young friendly staff all of which contributed to a very enjoyable evening. The food was elegantly presented as was the bill which was not just less than expected but great value for money. Great seafood at a good price!

We stayed here for a long weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary and would highly recommend this hotel. We had a king seaview room which was spacious and comfortable with everything we needed and more including lovely fluffy towels and robes. The staff were all friendly and gave efficient and prompt service without exception. The breakfast is extensive with good quality freshly cooked ingredients and the afternoon tea was great with an amazing choice of teas and information about their origin. The only slight disappointment was the cheese board at dinner which seemed to consist of average components with no information given about the cheese and apparently no local ingredients which considering the location would have been expected. That aside we had a wonderful weekend and will definitely be returning.

We chose this hotel for our first visit to Guernsey as during our hard earned annual weeks holiday, we wanted a couple of nights in somewhere upmarket. The rooms were beautiful, if somewhat minute in size. The webpage makes the rooms look much larger. However, the devil is in the detail. There were soft fluffy towels, comfy slippers & REAL, soft, loo roll. (No sandpaper here :) ). The staff are all good looking, attentive and interested in their guests, however, some accents were difficult to understand. Special mention to the breakfast staff & the sweet barman who's girlfriend works in the restaurant, Lovely people. The food is excellent, wonderful tastes and beautifully presented. We had a lovely two days and checked out happy.

This is where the problems started.... We travelled on to Jersey and checked into our hotel. Two days later, on checking out, my credit card was refused. This was so embarrassing you would not believe it. I knew exactly how much credit was on my card when I left home and had allocated my hotels accordingly. I telephoned Visa, to be told, that the Duke of Richmond had not lifted the pre authorisation on the three rooms which they had put on my card, despite us having paid in full. So they had taken the £400 for the bill & had £650 pre authorisation also held. Basically, I had 2 days holiday left + the journey back by land to Ireland..and NO credit on my card. Needless to say, I was livid.
I telephoned the hotel and explained the situation to the hotel manager. He said "Are you sure" ...of course I was bl***y sure. What a question ?? He said he would check it out and call me back.

I spent the penultimate day of our holiday constantly on the phone (roaming tarrif ) calling the hotel and visa, I must have made 10 or 15 calls. The manager refused to admit that it was the hotels error that the pre authorisation was not released on checkout and it was only that night that a lady who is head of operations admitted that, yes, somebody had dropped the ball.

The manager said he lifted the pre authorisation on Friday (it should have been done at check out on Wednesday morning), it would take 24 to 48 hours to clear and it was out of his hands.

On Friday night, my two friends and I booked into our final hotel in Jersey. Fortunately, my friend was able to pay my accommodation and dinner on her card. We had to limit our activities on the last two days in case there was an emergency on the way home. Put it this way.we had one precious week away a year and two days of it ruined.

I emailed the hotel manager asking if I could have contact details for the proprietor, this is what I got back:

Dear Mrs ******,

It was a pleasure to meet you and your friends during your visit at the Duke of Richmond Hotel this week. Please accept my apologies for only replying to you now as we have been experiencing a disruption to our email service late this afternoon.
Our General Manager, is based at our sister hotel, The Old Government House Hotel here in Guernsey and I would refer you to him in the first instance.
His contact details are:
If I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me direct at the hotel.
Kind regards,
********* ********
ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE ?? We had at least 6 or 7 telephone calls that day !!!

I emailed the General Manager on Friday and he called me on Monday. The least I expected was a voucher for one of their hotels for me and my companions, their last two days were also spoilt due to my anger and constant telephone calls. What did I get..a refund on ONE nights accommodation and to let him know if I got a large phone bill.

What a pity, a beautiful hotel, lovely food and then BANG, a holiday spoiled. Do visit the Duke of Richmond. But DON'T let them pre authorise your credit card.

A great choice on my part makes me a hero with my wife. Choosing the Duke of Richmond elevated me to that status. In a junior suite (407) overlooking the gardens and harbor, with a full moon is a great start. The decorating, and all the little touches are spot on. The room is spotless, the restaurant was excellent, and she couldn't be more pleased. Just a little thing - but in all our hotel stays we've never had a light in the safe. Like I said - all the little touches. Highly recommended.

Strange. I was in Room 407 as well, though not at the same time as Michael P of course ! Quaint, you might call it a boutique hotel, aspiring to greatness, but not living in the real world. Junior suite had all suite amenities but still a sight smaller than any standard USA hotel room. Though heated bathroom floor was a useful touch. TV options limited.

But step back...check-in smooth & courteous. Daily key drop-off friendly but not intrusive. Reception is best part of hotel.

Must admit though, much better than other so-called hotels in St Peter Port.

Restaurant. Hmmm. Tables small, no room for an elbow or a blackberry. Food portions miniscule, nouvelle cuisine in Guernsey ? Ha-Ha. Pricey for a handful of nothing, especially the sea bass. Make sure you order plenty of vegetables to go with the main course. Service very good, but flunkies over-attentive, every twitch I made produced some junior at my elbow, asking if my courgette was warm enough. I dare not catch their eye. But female restaurant duty managers all very cute...

An excellent hotel with extremely attentive staff who made an effort to remember room numbers and names and use them! Dining was superb, breakfast choices excellent. Cleanliness was to a very high standard and our superior room was "superior" indeed! Compared to many hotels we have stayed in over the years, I would say that this definitely falls into our Top 3! We hope to visit again!!

We stayed at the Duke of Richmond for three nights with our two children aged 9 and 7. The hotel staff absolutely made the stay , particularly for our son who's birthday it was . They made them feel very special and welcome with treats and entertainment as well great touches like spotting we were going to the beach and lending us a frisbee, football and towels. They also made a cake and sang happy birthday - what nine year old wouldn't be bowled away ? For those without children I can reassure that this isn't done in a "Butlin's " style just very appropriately and with genuine care . The food at breakfast and dinner was also great and the room "uniquely" but comfortably furnished, great views out over the harbour . Couldn't recommend highly enough
