We have just come back from our stay at the Duke of Richmond, and I miss it already! It is a beautiful hotel with style and grace, but also felt very homely. Our room was nice and big, and I loved the decor. It is warm and quirky, and a nice antidote to the boring modernistic style most hotels try to follow. We went in a couple of rooms at The Fregate because family members were staying there, and they weren't half as nice! Much plainer and cold looking and the furniture and beds looked cheaper. So I was very glad to go back to our hotel! Our bed in room 317 was massive and so comfy! All the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is so yummy. They have soya milk if you are vegan, and made me porridge with soya milk even though they were very busy. The hotel is great for kids too, and also pets! I read you can bring cats as well as dogs! There are sweets you can help yourself to! I had a room service salad one evening and it was so nice, you can pick exactly what you like on it. Basically, I was in heaven at this hotel, and would gladly live there if I could afford it!!

my wife and I stayed at the Duke of Richmond for 2 nights.
Straight away the reception showed us around the Hotel and explained everything we wanted to know.
the room was spotlessly clean with an Art Deco finish recently completed with a huge bed even bigger and more comfortable than a 5 Star in the States.
all staff particularly the restaurant and bar were very attentive and polite.

We spent four days at the Duke of Richmond with friends and can't praise the hotel enough. We had the upgraded room offer via the internet and delighted to say upgraded to a king size room. The breakfast was delicious and offered a great choice and recommend the omelettes. We ate in the hotel on the first night and could not fault the menu choice, wine choice and quality of the food. The lamb in particular was exceptional. The service throughout our stay was excellent and all the staff we encountered were friendly and attentive. We have stayed in other Guernsey hotels but on our next visit will be returning to the Duke of Richmond.

We cannot praise this hotel highly enough and are grateful that they made our stay so special. It truly was a trip to remember, and for all the right reasons. We enjoyed some unexpected anniversary treats, our room was wonderful in every way (turn-down service each evening was a nice touch). Not only that, but very single member of staff was professional, yet exceptionally kind and friendly. The uphill location may be a bit of an issue for some guests, but it was great for us as it was quiet and tranquil, yet within minutes of the town centre, which had all the hustle and bustle we could wish for. The location also gave us some sea views, as well as a chance to walk off some of the big breakfasts we enjoyed every morning! Sure, the weather could have been better (we would have liked to use the sun terrace and pool), but it didn't spoil our stay at all and we will simply hope for some sun next time; we cannot wait to return to the Duke of Richmond.

I stayed for four nights in August whilst on a business trip.
Everything from the room (107) to both food in the restaurant and by room service to the friendly staff was of the highest quality.
The choices at breakfast were wide ranging and dinner was equally as impressive.
The room had everything you could have wished and a particular mention must be made of the bath robes which were of the highest quality and actually fitted!
I found all of the staff members to be extremely helpful and friendly.
The location was good, away from any noisy areas but near enough to the town centre to walk back from although it is an uphill walk.
I shall certainly be returning.

The Duke of Richmond is the sister hotel to Old Government House, and it shows.

This hotel is the way a 4 star used to be, not quite a 5 star, but always striving to offer a 5 star service.

We upgraded to a superior room with a balcony and it was worth it. The room was large and comfortable with a stunning view.

From the moment the Concierge welcomes you in the car park, you are made to feel welcome and valued.

It's an easy walk down into St Peter Port, but not so easy walking back up. St Peter Port is built on a hill, but there's plenty of car parking in town.

The restaurant is top quality, especially the daily specials.

This hotel is well worth a trip.

After a couple of days on the island staying at other hotels and experiencing a combo of rude to OK service, walking through the doors of the Duke of Richmond to be greeted by the most smartly-dressed staff I think I've ever seen (outside of the Dorchester perhaps), with smiles, courtesy and deep professionalism was almost overwhelming (I wanted to hug them).

I had a frazzled 6-year-old with me and we'd just come from the beach and looked a bit scruffy, but no one batted an eyelid – in fact one of the female staff did what I have never encountered at a hotel before – she sat down with him while I checked in, spoke to him, engaged him, asked him some questions and gave him a disposable camera to take pictures, which never left his side during our all-too-brief stay. They print them and send them to you, apparently. Goodness what they'll find!

Everything about this hotel surprises and delights – our room was outstanding – most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, a bathroom stuffed with products and huge fluffy towels. There is a delightful terrace for drinks and meals which leads out from the restaurant and down to a small, heated swimming pool. The decor is eclectic to say the least (lots of leopard print), but works in a fun way.

We ate in the Leopard Room restaurant that evening, and not only did they print out a special kid's menu for my son, they brought him a bowl of cherry tomatoes b/c he's not keen on big beef tomatoes. I had lemon sole, and again it was possibly the best I've ever tasted.

There really aren't enough superlatives for this place – it's the whole deal, but for me, always, the service is the most important – and this is really superb, old-school service – on a par with Four Seasons or Ritz-Carlton, but with a British touch.

As many other reviewers have said: Outstanding. I'd be back here in a heartbeat.

Just back from a five night stay . The hotel and staff are wonderful as has been said on so many of the previous reviews . Breakfast and dinner was very good . Dinner was imaginatively presented , obviously prepared by a chef who takes great pride In their work . The decor is strange and over the top but it some how works .
I would however make a few observations which prevent me from awarding five stars .
First the parking . I had phoned the hotel prior to booking as I had seen a previous review which concerned me . I was told that the hotel only has limited spaces in the car park but that the "hotel could sort me out with free of charge parking nearby if the car park was full "Well the car park comprises of only five spaces and was full for the whole of our stay . The same cars seemed to be occupying the spaces , their owners obviously too scared to go out in case they lost their space ! When we arrived we parked in a 2 hour zone . When I enquired at reception I was given a small lecture on the fact that Guernsey is an island ( well I never knew that ) and parking was at a premium . I pointed out that I had specifically phoned prior to booking and the reception staff then offered to take my keys and change the cardboard dash clock every 2 hours ( which they clearly didn't want to do ) By the way this is in direct contravention of the rules on the clock but I was told to not worry ! In the event we managed to find 10 hour parking for the rest of our stay so it wasn't a big issue but the Hotel do need to be honest with customers who make enquiries about car parking .
When checking in we were also advised that our credit card was going to be pre authorised with an additional £250 charge (£50 per night ) for things we may want to charge to the room . I have never heard of this practise before and told the receptionist that if I wanted to purchase something I would pay . She said ok then but you can't charge anything to your room ! But we did and settled the bill on check out as we always do !
The other issue of note is the size of the double rooms . They are very small , there is very little space around the bed but the real problem is the bathroom . In order to get in the shower or bath it is necessary to perform a manoeuvre akin to an Olympic gymnast . You have to squash yourself against the side of the toilet , move the shower screen in front of the bathroom door and climb into the bath . You then have to lean over and somehow swing the screen back into place without performing a forward tumble . Also beware things are so tight in there that you are likely to burn your arm on the heated towel rail (which can't be turned off ) when brushing your teeth .
So for me , overall a good hotel with lots of dedicated hardworking staff .
But for the price (and this hotel is not cheap ) there are a few minor issues to be addressed for this hotel to be rated excellent .

The room was lovely and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts, brasserie and afternoon tea fantastic. The Spa treatments were totally luxurious - I'm now hooked! Can't wait to go back and wallow in the lap of luxury again......................
