This is the second time we have visited for the evening Fixed Menu and once again, we did not leave disappointed.
The food was amazing and Mark was brilliant, checking for allergies and making sure I had access to the Veggie menu when asked for it when we booked.
When we arrived 1830, we were seated quickly and in full view of the open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked and what's happening behind the scenes - it's very theatrical, unique and good fun for the diner!
The drinks menu features a vast array of local beers and spirits plus a good selection of softs for those who prefer something nin-alcoholic. We ordered our drinks and they arrived quickly by the same lovely Waitress who served us last time we visited.
It was a lovely atmosphere as we sat waiting for 'the show' to begin.
At 1900(ish) Mark and Team begin to prepare the first dish of the Fixed Menu. It's really interesting to watch all the hard work and accuracy that goes into the dishes they make and so the night begins...
We happily chatted between ourselves, while watching Mark and his Team cook. The Waitresses were lovely and very attentive - nothing was too much trouble.

This time we visited, Base had produced a Cheese and Biscuits Menu where you could also choose from a selection of Port and Dessert Wines that you could order as an extra with your coffees. We were too stuffed from the meal but some tables around us ordered and that looked delicious.
We left full, happy and incredibly relaxed after a very enjoyable evening.
As always a fantastic experience and once again, thanks Mark and Team for a brilliant night!!

Very pleased to have found this restaurant for a Friday night dinner. It operates with a single service and a set menu (but they were happy to provide me a vegetarian alternative to the meat and fish dishes - my partner had the regular menu, hence the steak in the photo).
The open kitchen meant we could see the final stages of cooking and serving, which added an extra level of anticipation as dishes were compiled. Base gave us fine dining with some fancy, cheffy touches but (importantly!) nothing that felt like the idea was better than the execution: the flavours were great and the combinations well-matched. On our visit, the highlight on a night of high standards was the white onion and summer truffle broth, with a thyme and parmesan crouton (I'd advised them that my vegetarianism doesn't extend to only eating vegetarian cheese, so the parmesan was fine by me). A lighter (and beef-stock-free) take on French onion soup, there was savoury depth to complement the sweetness of the onion, with the truffle underlining things rather than scribbling all over them as can happen if it is used with too-heavy a hand.
Service was excellent, both friendly and attentive. The pacing of the evening felt just right too - no mean feat when every table gets its next course at the same time. Good luck to Mark and his team as the enter their second year at Base - I'm looking forward to visiting again when I next come over to Cumbria.

We enjoyed a fab selection of the mix and match dishes all of which tasted amazing. There was 4 of us and we ordered 9 dishes in total which was more than enough. Ribs, chicken wings, prawns, cauliflower chickpea curry and more!

Had a delicious 7 course set meal here on Saturday night. The food was out of this world and everything was so tasty. The staff were really friendly and efficient. The head chef came to chat to each table at the end which was a nice touch. You can watch all the food being prepared too which is good. Definitely 10/10. Would highly recommend and we can’t wait to return very soon.

I intended to visit this exciting new restaurant in my hometown before we went into the 3rd lockdown but sadly didn’t get chance. First visited a couple of weeks ago for lunch with my mum. We had a selection of small plates, which were absolutely delicious and really generous portions. I returned last night for the evening menu with my husband and good friends. Well what can I say..! Absolutely fabulous food and experience. Mark really knows how to put flavours together and watching him at work in the kitchen preparing our food was superb. With regular menu changes and the option to adapt for particular dietary requirements it’s an experience not to missed. We will be returning again soon. Staff were also lovely and friendly and very attentive explaining what each dish was. We are so lucky to have this quality of restaurant and food all locally sourced in our home town.

We inadvertently stumbled across this location whilst out for a country walk, thinking this would be a coffee and cake style café, how wrong could we have been! We were given a menu by a lovely woman immacutaly made up with her hot pink nails and were in awe and wonder with the selection on offer... A great array of both Gluten Free and Vegetarian options we shared a sublime meal in a beautiful setting. Genuinely some of the most excuisitely prepared food, so well flavoured that no additional seasoning is required. We delighted in satay cauliflower, roasted rosemary and brocilli, baked goats cheese on a beautiful bed of salad and hassle back potatoes... This is not your standard style eatery, genuinely some of the best food we have eaten in years.

Fantastic food and the tasting menu was definitely worth while. The courses are well timed, fantastic flavour and ample given the menu format itself. We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the theatrics of seeing the food prepared and also the food itself.
Parking to get to the restaurant is a challenge so worth either planning where you park ahead of time or alternatively getting a taxi if you're comfortable with that.The restaurant is sign posted as the cafe if that helps as you go up the hill.
For us, having travelled whilst on holiday, the food was not only incredible but also a really special experience. Thank you to the team for making it special!

We called in at Ford Park to walk up to the Barrow Monument (worth a visit - amazing views) and came across Base. We wrongly expected the type of fare you might typically find in a park cafe.
The food is excellent with the small plates and sides a great and affordable way to feed the family with something for everyone. All presented with care and absolutely delicious. We enjoyed it so much we had to make a return visit while in the area. Hard to choose a favourite but the halloumi fries and superb garlic mayo would be hard to beat. Good selection of drinks and desserts to round things off.
Really friendly and helpful service from our waitress who made us feel incredibly welcome and for whom nothing was too much trouble. If you're in the area, a visit to Base should definitely be on your list.

A great fine dining experience in a nice location, we enjoyed the set menu, food and service were excellent. Felt very safe dining here after COVID. It was nice that the owner/chef took time to speak to each table dining.

Enjoyed a lovely lunch here. Food was amazing and well priced. Just a few constructive criticisms. We felt rushed towards the end, to leave, so next time we'll book an earlier slot. There was no soda available to have a spritzer but the tonic made a reasonable alternative and we were really looking forward to a home made chocolate with our coffee but they only sell them in boxes whereas this would make a nice add on sale. Hopefully these points will be taken onboard but rest including service was top notch.

Ordered food for a special take away for our anniversary. We're SOOOO pleased we chose Base. Exceptional food of the highest quality (even after a little stroll home!) Couldn't recommend highly enough. I'll be dreaming about the roast cauliflower satay, baked goats cheese & king prawns for a long time to come! Best chips ever too!! Thank you.

Second take away from Base. First was Seabass main meal and a lamb... tonight was a selection of small dishes.... totally amazing, was beyond expectations for a takeaway. Food was freshly prepared and piping hot when got home. Lucky enough to have had the 5 course meal before lockdown, and look forward to going again. Well done keep up good work 👏👏

My husband and I have been twice since base opened a couple of months ago and I can't praise it highly enough, base isn't just a restaurant it's a dining experience. The food is outstanding, superb flavours and as a vegetarian myself I find it amazing to finally find a restaurant that serves an out of the box, innovative menu that changes on a weekly basis (a la'carte). Of course my husband who is not a vegetarian finds the choice amazing and delicious, it really is a full senses dining experience.
Mark puts passion in his food and restaurant and it shows, the service is excellent and the staff are a credit to the business. Can't recommend 'base' highly enough.

Wild mushroom arancini with parmesan custard is exceptional - second time I've had it, lamb rump was also spot on and really enjoyed the chorizo, cockles and samphire side order.Perfect for a night off cooking for yourself at home and better quality than most takeaways you'll ever have.

Exceptionally tasty. Miss X had an equally delicious haloumi salad affair.
The lunch was tasty and filling but did leave room for a speciality home made chocolate torte.
With the new lockdown we hope that we can order take away food from Base knowing that the quality is 100% with good value and locallly sourced ingredients.

Visited the restaurant for the first time tonight, it was an absolutely fabulous experience- the quality of the food and presentation was outstanding. Along with the venue, service and atmosphere, you couldn't ask for more - personally we think the cost is far too low for the standard! It was a pleasure to speak to Mark after dinner and we look forward to booking him for further private dining. From our first meeting with Mark when he catered for our wedding 8 years ago, he has always excelled himself on every occasion. Please support these guys as I assure you there is nothing like it in the area.

We had heard good things about The Base A new venture located in Ford Park in Ulverston so my wife and I decided to try it for lunch in September. We enjoyed it so much we booked on the spot for dinner to celebrate my wife’s birthday a few weeks later. The chef Mark Satterthwaite and his staff cook in an open kitchen and everyone is seated and served in one sitting. The menu is original and sourced almost entirely locally. The food was excellent from start to finish and spectacularly good value. The business deserves to flourish and we wish them all the best in this difficult time.
