HIV and Young People in Africa - The facts
TackleAfrica works in sub-Saharan Africa, the part of the world most affected by HIV and AIDS where young people are one of the groups most at risk of infection. It is estimated that 10 million people aged 15-24 are living with HIV worldwide, this age group represents about 40% of all new infections. We aim to promote positive behaviour change among young people, by providing them with information about HIV and AIDS through the medium of football.
What we do
Almost everyone in Africa is affected by HIV and AIDS. Young people are particularly vulnerable.
Football in Africa is incredibly popular and a great way of engaging with young people.
We use football coaching to educate young Africans about sexual health, relationships and HIV.
Specifically we teach young people how to avoid getting HIV, how to live with HIV if you have it, and how to support others to do the same.
All our education is done on the pitch through unique interactive football drills, so young people enjoy, understand, learn and remember.
We train African coaches, schoolteachers and youth leaders to do this coaching so that our work is African led and nobody is completely dependant on us. We call these people ‘multipliers’ as they are able to multiply our impact by training others. Click below for latest news on our projects in these 6 countries:
Tackle Africa Coaching Manual
The Tackle Africa football coaching manual combines best practice football drills and HIV education and is the most sophisticated and comprehensive HIV-education-through-football curriculum available today, and are already rolling out its use across Africa. For a copy of the coaching manual, to learn more about becoming a UK volunteer or working with us as a partner organisation in Africa, please contact us.
Tackle Africa Football Marathons
TackleAfrica’s unique fundraising event. In each of the last two years we have raised over £100,000 with over 400 people taking part in a sponsored endurance football super-tournament held in various cities and towns around the UK. For details of upcoming fund-raising vents and how you can get involved, please visit our website.
How you can help
TackleAfrica are a small charity with an enormous goal. We have only 6 staff and reach about 15,000 young Africans each year.
Like most charities – or football clubs - our supporters are a massive part of what we do.
If you are a football club, company, charity or other organisation we’d also love to talk to you about partnerships.
Absolute madness for a great cause. Brilliantly organized. Well done Tackle Africa.
Great initiative. Friendly spirit in general. Length of matches could be shortened for more fun and less pain.
Was great to see the Football Marathon come to Brighton, helping to raise much needed funds for HIV education of young people in a way that is fun and engaging …
Nice venue, easy access. Maybe somewhere a bit flatter next-time.
Well organised + is very fun - just need more teams next year.
