Could you give a cat a loving home?
There are hundreds of furry friends waiting for new homes at the moment. Here are the details of just four of the city’s cat charities, all of whom deal with re-homing lost and abandoned cats and kittens.
If you can’t adopt a cat, they’re all in serious need of donations and volunteers. Sadly, there are just as many dogs in need of homes in the city, so if you’d love a canine friend click here for information about adopting a dog.
CityCats Brighton and Hove
City Cat Shelter has a dedicated cat welfare neutering programme and homes around 250 unwanted cats every year. They run 100% on donations and unpaid volunteers with no head office, paid workers or paid management. Like every pet rehoming centre in Brighton and Hove, it’s a love thing and they do a sterling job.
They run a cosy cattery, carry out community neutering and micro-chipping and give advice. They visit vulnerable people to ensure they can look after their cats in the best possible way and never, ever put a healthy cat down. As such, they look after a lot of cats who are on expensive long-term medication.

Lost cats Brighton
Lost Cats Brighton help people find their lost cats. They also take in strays and rehome them once they’re fit, healthy, neutered, chipped and given all the necessary jabs.
It’s another self-run organisation and they always appreciate donations. Ron and his friendly team never turn a cat away and you can contact them at any time of day or night if there’s a cat-related emergency.
As well as homes for their kitties, they need extra volunteers, more people to foster cats between homes, clean bedding, blankets, litter trays and old wool for the lady who knits cat blankets. If you can spare them tins of catfood or even bric-a-brac for fundraising, it’ll also be greatly appreciated.

Cat Welfare Sussex
Cat Welfare Sussex is another voluntary organisation dedicated to cat health and happiness. They look after stray and welfare cats, whether they’re domesticated or feral. The charity rescues, neuters and even rehabilitates stray and feral cats, helping prevent unwanted litters of kittens.
Rescuing around 150 cats a year, they never put a healthy animal to sleep. They also provide subsidised neutering for people who can’t afford vet fees.

Kitty in the City Cat Rescue
Kitty in the City Cat Rescue look after abandoned and homeless cats by placing them in foster homes while they wait for a long term home. All the cats and kittens they rehome are checked by a vet, vaccinated and treated for fleas and worms.
Kittens are rehomed on the understanding they’ll be neutered at the right age and the charity carries out home checks before rehoming as well as follow-up visits to make sure the rehomed kitties are settling in OK.
