From historical cinemas to pub basements, you can watch all kinds of films in all kinds of places in Brighton and Hove.  Whether it's the famous Duke of York's cinema or the little known English subtitled films showing downstairs at The Bee's Mouth, there is something here to tickle your fancy.

1. Duke of York's Picturehouse

It's the oldest cinema in Britain and has been around for over a hundred years.  Originally, it sat eight hundred people and showed silent films with a small orchestra accompanying.  Now, it shows mostly art house and independent films and is as famous for its pair of stripy tighted legs on the roof as the film it shows.  It also has a very nice bar upstairs and patrons can sit out on the balcony while they wait for their film.

2. Cineworld Brighton Marina

Marinas are all about boats, right?  Well, not in Brighton and Hove.  Brighton marina is home to many other attractions and one of those is the multiplex Cineworld Cinema.  Not only does it have free parking, such a rarity in this city, it shows all the latest films and some in 3D.  It sells all your favourite cinema snacks and you can even hire screens for private events and parties.

3. The Old Market

Better known for theatre, The Old Market actually holds regular film screenings called Tom's Film Club showing classic and cult classic films at just £6 a ticket or £24 for a season ticket.  They even accept recommendations for future films to screen so if you've got a classic film you love but didn't get to see in the cinema, it could be worth suggesting it.

4. Clock Tower Cinema

Every other Monday you can see cult and classic films completely free of charge at The Quadrant pub near the Clock Tower in central Brighton.  They even give out free popcorn.  Previous films shown include Mallrats, Enter the Dragon, Blue Velvet and Lost Boys.

5. In Other Words Cinema

These film showings are designed specifically to help people who are learning to speak English.  Downstairs at the Bees Mouth pub in Hove, they screen an English language film with English subtitles to help people extend their understanding of the English language.  A workshop precedes the film explaining vocabularly and expression.  After the film there's a quiz and English language conversation.  All this great language learning is just £5.

6. Duke's at Komedia

The famous century old cinema has a modern, much younger, sibling in the North Laine.  It's located upstairs in the same building as the Komedia comedy club, has two screens,  shows all the latest blockbusters and has a rather fabulous bar serving alcohol that you can take into your film as well as the usual cinema snacks plus cakes and other goodies.586c577427a7ad8604000e2e

7. Outside Screenings

Last summer, outside cinema screenings were popping up all over the place.  Brighton's Big Screen was a complex down on the seafront at the Kemptown end of town showing films and sporting events and the Duke of York's cinema were putting on films at Preston Manor.  Despite the unpredictable weather in this country, these screenings proved very popular with classic films like The Princess Bride, Labyrinth and The Goonies selling out completely.  We definitely expect to see the Duke's pop up screenings popping up again this summer.
