Nothing beats the feel of the cold autumn Sussex air on your face – and Brighton and Hove is just a stone’s throw from some of the most beautiful countryside you can imagine. So hop into your car and get out there – either for a hearty ramble and pub lunch with friends, or for a purpose… The glorious manor house at Firle is the setting for a truly spectacular production this week. The Light Fantastic (5, 6 & 7th October) will transform Firle Place’s magnificent façade and grounds into a technicolour spectacle, accompanied by narration from film legend and Sussex resident Michael Jayston, plus Nicola Ravenscroft and Rula Lenska. The bright autumn sunshine will - hopefully – shine down on Ardingly Showground – for the Autumn Show and Game Fair 2018 this weekend (6&7 October). Boasting the best of country sports and the countryside, there will be chances to have a go at clay pigeon shooting, archery and bread-making, and to fantastic displays of falconry on horseback etc. There will also be childrens activities, a fairground, and a chance to talk about and buy a bunny (how cute!). Nearer to home, and closer to the hearts of those wanting to eat, drink and get merry is Oktoberfest (12th and 13th October). This uber-joyous, Bavarian-themed event takes place at The Level and features not just oceans of beer (plus pretzels), but great entertainment and music. And, finally, if all that fresh air has left you feeling a bit chilly, warm yourself up with some heartwarming comedy at The Old Market on October 10th. A Hundred Different Words for Loveby James Rowland is a tale of love, love lost and love found again. All set to original music. It’s autumn and the sun is still (mostly) shining across our beautiful city. Long may it continue! Gerry Hussein |
