The summer festival madness is over, and autumn in Brighton and Hove brings a chance to celebrate in a more cerebral fashion - as well as to enjoy all things harvest-related as the leaves start to turn. Brighton Digital Festival which is already in full swing and runs until 13th October, is a great opportunity to explore digital culture and creativity in our city. Over 60,000 people came along to its 190+ events in 2016 to find out about and discuss the impact of digital innovation on our society. Stand-out events include vrlab at The Old Market, which brings together immersive experiences and experiments from the world of arts, gaming and documentary/film. Revive your 9-5 through, “stories and inspiration from over 20 free spirits, adventurers, thinkers, philanthropists and intellectuals,” say the organisers of TEDx. Come to Brighton Dome on Friday 26th October for ‘The Lives and Travels of the Daring, Different and Dangerous’- a day of uplifting talks and in-depth discussion – you’ll leave feeling ready to take on the world! If you’re looking a creative experience, Brighton Photo Biennial 2018 (28 September to 28 October) features photography exhibitions and events on the theme of A New Europe including country post-referendum by Tereza Cervenová and examinations of migration and the refugee crisis by Émeric Lhuisset and Harley Weir. Or head for Worthing beach for Worthing Light Festival (14-16 September) to stroll around East Beach Artist Collective’s collection of sustainable art installations using renewable energy. There will also be performances by Poi Passion and the Silver Sabre Sussex Academy, and an interactive light playground by Creative Waves. Taking life a little easier is the idea behind Snailspace, a collection of brightly-painted snail sculptures that will be sliming their way across Brighton and Hove from 15th September to 18th November. The larger-than-life molluscs are being painted by local artists and community groups and are a way to raise awareness of, and funds for Martlets Hospice. If food is what lights your fire, the Fiery Food Festival (15th and 16th September) will get your tastebuds glowing. Victoria Gardens is the venue for all things chilli - like chilli drinks, sweet and savoury chilli foods, plus the infamous chilli eating competition. Nothing says harvest-time more powerfully than the humble apple – and there is a chance to celebrate this year’s rich pickings on Apple Day (23rd September 2018). The lovely Stanmer Park is the venue for this free event. So don’t let the longer evenings drag you down – get out there and make the most of our great, happening City! |
