Project V: Students Giving Something to the Community

Student Volunteering Week at the University of Sussex is coming to an end, and has been a great way to demonstrate that there’s more to us Higher Education sorts than a thirst for knowledge and distaste for washing up.

Whilst some residents of Brighton and Hove have questioned the value of students in the community, we do fill a volunteering void. We have a bit more time on our hands than someone with a 9-5, and are always looking for ways to try something new and exciting.

Project V placements are a fantastic opportunity at the University of Sussex. To get students working in the community, placements with local charities and clubs are offered by the university in a laid-back manner that appeals to students, for whom flexibility is the most important thing.

Volunteers are becoming more crucial resources than ever for charities in Brighton and Hove, with impending cuts to important services approaching. Charities are facing a harder time getting donations, and promotion of a cause is often fuelled by manpower.

So students, I congratulate you for taking part in Project V if you do, and implore you to give volunteer placements a go if you don’t. You’ll learn on the job and meet lots of new friendly faces happy to see you.
