**UPDATED Friday 1st December 2017**
The “crowdfunding” campaign (www.spacehive.com/madeira-terrace) to save the glorious Victorian arches of Madeira Terrace on Brighton seafront is in trouble - time has almost run out and despite valiant efforts by many raising over 91% of the funds, a sizable amount remains to reach the target.
As of today’s date the campaign has 0 days to go and £464,727 has been pledged (this includes £100,000 from the Council). The target was £422,240; the target date is November 30.
The aims of the campaign are twofold: (i) to raise funds for a pilot renovation of 3 arches, to contain retail/leisure outlets and demonstrate the viability of renovating the whole Terrace; and (ii) to show sufficient community support to generate further funding.
If the campaign fails to reach its target, none of the pledges will be redeemed and the chances of obtaining a grant from, say, the National Heritage Lottery Fund, will be greatly reduced. In that event, there is a very good chance that the iconic Grade II-listed terrace, identified by the Victorian Society as one of the top ten at-risk Victorian and Edwardian structures in Britain, will go the way of the West Pier.
The fact that so far 2130 residents and business have pledged to support the campaign is heroic.
It would be a tragedy if this much-loved feature with its delicate cast-iron latticed arches, completed in 1897 and integral part of the city’s heritage for more than 100 years, was lost.
