September can bring on a weird combination of emotions. On the one hand, relief that life is back to some sort of normality, but on the other, a sinking sense of ‘here-we-go-again’ as the old routines kick in. Our vibrant city is full of opportunities to join up, join in and learn something new. Put on your dance shoes and step out at Brighton Tap Festival (31st August to 2nd September), or learn to swing dance in style year-round at laid-back drop-in classes across Brighton and Hove, courtesy of the brilliant teachers at Swing Patrol – link arms with a new partner there, or bring your own!
Creative instincts
Learn to throw pottery and paint pots and pictures at Art Shop and Pottery in Hove – a bijou, bright shop with a great basement space where you can join group classes or book individual sessions. Or, for a range of adult art and crafts classes from flower-arranging to painting with acrylics, take a look at Varndean College.

Mind the gap
Or if you fancy learning a language or brushing up on your professional skills during the daytime (or evenings), the Friends Centres in The Lanes and central Brighton (and other venues across the city), serve over 1,100 learners each year and have myriad courses, alongside arts, crafts and creative ones.
