Autumn is officially upon us, and with it a new season of exciting events and entertainment going on around Brighton & Hove, including music, comedy shows, family events, heritage tours, literature events, theatre, visual art and dance, to name just a few.
For music lovers, particularly those with a keen interest in classical and early music, Brighton Early Music Festival (BREMF) is one to look out for.
Founded in 2002 BREMF has enjoyed increasing success in its multi-disciplinary approach to productions, which often combine dance and other artistic disciplines to challenge pre-conceptions of early music.
This year its works have been produced with an overarching theme of Nature and Science in mind – 17th century polymath, Athanasius Kircher and 17th century philosopher, Francis Bacon are just a couple of figures that have influenced production for the festival, particularly with their interest in the relationships between music, mathematics and science.
The main festival will run from October to November, with a pre-festival taking place from mid-September. There’s something for everyone including a ‘Club Night’ aimed at under 30s, family concerts and a number of educational projects which reach out to different schools during the pre-festival.
If you’re interested in getting directly involved in the classical music scene, there are also a number of workshops that BREMF runs for singers of all abilities. Visit ‘ bremf.org.uk' for more information, the online programme and event booking.
Brighton’s Digital Festival, first launched in 2000 has begun again this year and will run until September 30th. It explores contemporary digital culture and funds individual and group artists to showcase their work, with anyone with an idea welcome to apply.
Many of the events for the festival are free, and the forms of work involved are huge – from online exhibitions, educational projects, to visual/sound pieces and workshops open to the public. Check the website ‘ brightondigitalfestival.co.uk ’ for details of their upcoming events.
For film lovers, Brighton’s CINECITY Film Festival, running from 11th-27th November is certainly not to be missed. The festival will include works from around the world, and a full programme of what’s to be included is soon to come. Previous years have featured films encapsulating art and poetry with a live soundtrack playing alongside, interviews and discussions with filmmakers, workshops, exhibitions, site-specific works, and many other innovative projects.
Please check out their website ‘ cine-city.co.uk ’ to get a flavour of the sorts of work they’ve included in previous years, and keep an eye out for November’s programme.
