I made contact with Sue Papworth of TOAD School of Driving through a friend of mine who recommended her for training in gaining my B+E towing entitlement. From the first contact Sue was professional yet friendly and was able to find time within her schedule to offer an early initial assessment of my abilities and form a plan of attack towards my test. As a driver of 17 years it was a strange feeling to be back in the position of being taught to drive. However Sue was able to point out the common habits of drivers who have been driving for a long time and also identify the specific areas in which I had developed bad habits and help me correct them without being patronising or overly authoritative. She seemed able to adjust the content of the tuition on the fly to suit my specific requirements to keep practicing the areas I needed most to utilise our time together most efficiently. Everything that was likely to come up in the test was covered within the tuition and more, meaning that the test didn’t throw up anything which was unexpected or off-putting. Sue’s emphasis was very much on safety rather than just the pure criteria of passing the test which instils a confidence that the level in which she is training you to is not just the requirement for the test, but to a much higher standard. This meant that even if you felt you had made a slight mistake or error in judgement during the test, it was still well above the standard required. I can now understand how she gets such a high pass rate whether it is for standard car test or the B+E trailer test. Being in an enclosed space so close to someone for several hours requires a level of personality compatibility and Sue has a very pleasant demeanour with a great deal of patience too. She takes an interest in finding out more about you and keeps conversation interesting and relevant. She was able to address issues and point out areas for improvement in a very palatable manner without coming across as angry, annoyed, or apathetic which must be very difficult if you have spent over 10 years pointing out the same errors to people but somehow Sue manages to see you as the individual that you are and tailor to your own requirements. I certainly would recommend Sue and the TOAD School of Driving to anyone in the area looking to gain their towing entitlement or even those who already have it and wish to gain some confidence in their towing. It’s also had a massive effect on my general driving and I am noticing much more on the road allowing me to be safer, which is possibly a bigger thing to take away from my experience with TOAD than anything else.
