I contacted The Crown & Anchor as I was looking for a pub in Eastbourne which was showing the Six Nations rugby and could cater for a party of 12. I explained to the lady on the phone that we were in the area for a special birthday and the finals of the Six Nations was going to be one of the highlights. She was very helpful, even walking into the bar to help her decide which was the best table to reserve for us.
We arrived with much anticipation and were shown to our table which had excellent views of the television. We ordered food which was of a decent quality and several rounds of drinks as we enjoyed the penultimate match as a warm up to the England v Ireland game. As we settled to down to watch the anticipated final the television channel was switched to show football. Much to our dismay all the other televisions apart from ours were still showing rugby. We spoke to the bar staff and were told some other people who were sat the other side of the bar in front of a television showing rugby wanted to watch a local football match so we asked if the two television channels could simply be swapped. This was refused and the manager told us in no uncertain terms that if we did not like it we could leave. I may be cynical but surely we could have been told this would be the case either on booking or before we parted with a considerable amount of money on food and drinks. Sadly as the pub was packed with people watching the rugby we had no choice but to leave and return to our accomodation to huddle around a smalll television in one of the rooms to watch what was left of the match. Such a shame that staff attitude has prompted this review which would have otherwise been quite positive.

We had a family meal yesterday at the crown & Anchor and I cannot recommend it enough! I had the halloumi burger which was absolutely delicious and my husband had the roast which he said was the best roast he had eaten in years! (Not sure what that says about my cooking) The service was friendly and efficient and we had our 2 year old daughter who was made to feel welcome, would highly recommend! Great atmosphere and lovely decor!

I had seen good reports on Tripadvisor, but a real pub right on the seafront next to our hotel... almost impossible! However, as is often the case, I was wrong. The Crown and Anchor is as fine a gastropub as I could wish to try.
Wanting something to eat, and being so close, it seemed the obvious place to go. The beer was excellent, and the food was tasty. But the best thing about it was the atmosphere: the staff were friendly and efficient, even after my card was initially declined - all was eventually sorted. As we were starting, a young man set up for a live music session. We had some banter with him, totally friendly (his guitar playing was reasonable, but his singing... but that would be a different review!
At the same time there was a football match on the TV at the other end of the bar, but there was no animosity between the two factions; they each got on with what they were into. All in all a good place to visit, though I have a feeling it could get very noisy in high season.

I don't know what the rest of Eastbourne ''s pub grub is like if this gets one of the best reviews on TA. It was just an average meal but value for money .

We were staying in the hotel just opposite the pub, and spotted it when parking the car.
After checking out the reviews ( which were mainly positive) we decided to dine there.Just to make sure we had a table, I phoned them to book, no trouble..
Good job I did as the place was pretty full. The pub had a good atmosphere about it and all the staff were friendly and accommodating.
Our food didn't take too long to arrive, and when it did, well the reviews didn't lie...We had two steaks, hot burger and sausage and mash.
All well presented and good portion sizes. We all enjoyed the mains and dessert so much, that we decided to book for the following evening....
This turned out to be a repeat performance.....EXCELLENT...10/10..

Stayed locally while working in the area and visited twice. Ate on both visits, lamb shank the first night and pork belly the second. Both meals were of good quality, served quickly and were reasonably priced. The beer is well kept and a choice of four real ales. The pub doesn't have a seperate restaurant area but doesn't really need it. There is a seperate 'Sports Bar' but this doesn't intrude even with football being shown and a darts match taking place.
There are a mixture of all walks of life coming and going but the atmosphere is friendly and comfortable.Parking in the evening is no issue but may be harder during the day, especially during the busier seasons.
Staff are very friendly but can at times be slightly off the ball but in general the service is good. The toilets could be cleaner but to be fair, i have seen far worse. The bar stools are well overdue a replacement or at the very least a good clean as they are stained and unsightly.Overall, a decent pub offering decent food and drink.

Staying at the 'York House' just down the road so this place was handy. Neighbourhood bar on the seafront with pool/darts/sports TV good service and burgers to savour ( tried the stilton burger , delicious ) . Couple of real ales but no craft lager .
Visited twice and will return

We have visited The Crown & Anchor before and I must say it's has improved every visit.
We decided to go there to eat for the first time while visiting Eastbourne.
It was a very cold wet evening, however the pub was warm and cosy with just a few customers. The young lady that served us was friendly and helpful.
The menu was added to with a specials board. I ordered cottage pie which it said it was homemade with vegetables.
I checked what vegetables as some places only give you peas.
However when the dinner arrived it was definitely a homemade Cottage Pie, it was in a large dish and came with four different Fresh Vegetables!!! Wow I love veg and always have to pay extra for it.
My husband ordered Scampi and he said it was very good. There was plenty too
I would have liked to have desert but was too full, there were lovely deserts, rhubarb crumble , jam pudding, bread and butter pub and lots more.
The two guys working behind the bar / food were friendly too
The drink choice / price was good so will certainly visit again soon.

Just had a succulent belly pork with freshly cooked seasonal veg and creamy mash. Who wants exotic cuisine when good old British fare is this good. I was full before the plate was finished but cleared it anyway cos I loved it. Staff were friendly and efficient, food arrived quicker than expected and, my pet hate when it's not done, my plate was cleared away smartly to top it all they keep a good cellar here too. I enjoyed watching the football but if that's not your cuppa it's not intrusive. In the short time I was there they impressed me hugely. I'll be back next time I'm in Eastbourne. Well done and thanks to bar staff and chefs. Cheers

Booked here on the reviews on trip advisor. So glad we did. We rarely get chance for a roast dinner and hadn't eaten all day so booked for an early evening meal. The staff were so friendly and welcoming despite already having a very busy day. The roast beef we ordered came very quickly, closely followed by the the horseradish sauce. We had ordered gravy on the side as I am very fussy as to what it touches on my plate but this was not at all a problem for the staff. The vegetables were truly delicious and plentiful, the beef gave my teeth a bit of a workout but was very tasty. We ordered dessert which was homemade and my husband enjoyed the crumble and custard immensely. I had the cheesesboard as not a sweet fan, and for once the cheese did not outnumber the biscuits but were in perfect ratio. The stilton was delicious and the grapes a nice accompanyment. All the staff were very friendly and hospitable and I look forward to visiting again.

Called in this lovely pub to use the toilet and stayed for several drinks. Didn't eat but everyone around us did. The food looked and was presented nice by the hard working staff and I would definitely eat here. The place had a lovely atmosphere and ambulance about it. Will call again

Nice proper old pub.
Large portions of food, which is a refreshing change, and for very good prices.
Avoid the wines though!

I discovered this pub by accident, just looking for somewhere to eat. Since then I've been back many times and took some friends visiting the area. I drive from Surrey to Eastbourne for a day out and go for lunch at The Crown & Anchor.
I usually order the steak but my friends ordered other dishes and were quite happy. There's always a table available during off-peak times but it's better to book one in busy periods.

Came here with my boyfriend for a Valentine's Day meal - we booked in advance and had a beautiful table set out for us with roses and candles, lovely atmosphere.
The workers were all very welcoming and very attentive!
I decided to have the starter sharing platter for my main and I was very pleased! A little bit of everything, perfect variety. The ribs were to die for, the meat fell off the bone and each one was delicious! I definitely recommend these!
We stayed at the Shore View hotel which is literally across the road and I'm so glad we did as we may not have visited otherwise.
Thank you for a fab meal! We would definitely return if we get a chance :)

Popped into here after eating out in Eastbourne. This pub is nicely decorated. The staff are friendly and so are the locals. Had a beer in here with friends and were very comfortable. Although we didn't eat, the menu on the board looked very nice.

Feel really terrible that my last visit to this place was years and years ago when it certainly wasn't like this!
Had read recent reviews and as it is literally down the road from me decided to go for lunch with a friend.
Lovely menu with something for everyone . We both chose the cottage pie which came with vegetables on the side and a mini jug of gravy . The portions were fantastic (one of us was given a doggy box to take some home ) and it tasted divine. You could tell it was home made and not bought in .
Not the cheapest pub food but it's not ordinary pub grub and it certainly is worth going there .
Decor is nice, we sat by an open fire . The staff today were two lovely girls / ladies who couldn't have made us feel more welcome .
Definitely going back.

We were going to eat here but weren't blown away by the menu, however the staff were exceptionally friendly and the drinks were fair priced. We enjoyed the use of pool table, dart board and juke box. I also personally liked that it was dog friendly!

Dropped in to try out the fish n chips as we always call in here and once again, were not disappointed.
Pleasant meal, variety of beers available, decor in good order and clientele full of fun as they were gearing up for a karaoke evening.

In Eastbourne for a few days, found this splendid pub. Friendly staff and great pub food. Husband says they know how to keep cask ale, (a sign a good pub) The Old Speckled Hen beer was good. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the ladies loo! So many pub loos are neglected. These were spotless and well supplied. Well done Crown and Anchor for keeping up the tradition of a fine English pub and maintaining such high standards in all areas
