I've just returned from my first trip to The Hydro and did not leave disappointed. Our room had a spectacular sea view and was very tastefully decorated. In fact, I thought the entire hotel (on the inside) was extremely well presented. Looking at the outside of the hotel does not do it justice, I can tell you! The location was perfect both for the nearby amenities of Eastbourne and a bit of peace and quiet. I'm assured that when it's not minus three outside it's very pleasant to take a walk up to Beachy Head.

Just a couple of very minor points I'd make -- I was disappointed with the veggie option in the Crystal restaurant. One choice only, and my least favourite: risotto. Seems unfair to pay the same as everyone else for such a simple meal. I found all the staff to be well-presented and friendly, but there were a couple of incidents where I felt the ball was dropped a little. For example, we were served our starter, soup, without rolls and had to ask. Didn't make a massive difference as our waitress was very friendly and helpful and the problem was rectified straight away. Just thought I'd mention it as I know the hotel prides itself on service and it would be disappointing for its many, many returning guests if standards were to drop.

My moan above is only supposed to be a little one -- overall I would rate this hotel very highly for a relaxing, romantic get away and will definitely be returning.

My husband and I have recently returned from another amazing stay at this hotel. Despite it being close to Christmas and very busy, it was a relaxing and quiet stay for us. We both have very busy jobs and so look forward to returning to The Hydro for a quiet and relaxing stay. The service is outstanding, the food is outstanding and the rooms are outstanding (especially the seaview rooms).

The hotel is beautifully decorated and it is modern and up to date, we try and stay in the same room every visit and on this occasion we noticed they had updated the TV and some of the pictures. The rooms are cleaned everyday, towels and complimentary items are replenished everyday.

The staff are very friendly but professional, they have even got to know us now as we have been there so often and always make an effort to come and talk to us, this makes us feel important. Our room wasnt made up into a double when we arrived, but that was quickly sorted out with no problem at all, and their apologies. These are things that are important, delivering first class service in an instant.

Finally the food in this hotel is amazing, whether it is in the conservatory for lunch, or the the Crystal restuarant for dinner or the Orangery for a special occasion. My dessert in the Orangery took nine hours to assemble apparently, it tasted amazing. The rest of the meal was supberb, even the after dinner confectionary was hand made.

So if you are looking for a relaxing break in a hotel that is close to all the amenities then the Hydro is for you.....

Two nights spent in this hotel in Sept 2010, with our toddler. It is a popular location with older people in the area and the sea view rooms have a spectacular view. Location is peaceful. Rooms are a good size and bathroom has a bath with a powerful shower. It boasts quite possibly the smallest lift in Eastbourne, although stairs are provided.

There is a nice large cafe / conservatory and lawn with facilities for croquet. Small heated swimming / paddling pool.

Food is distinctly average. We paid £25 a head for the set menu in the evening (only option available). Very disappointed by the perfect square of fish smothered in packet sauce which can only have come straight out of the freezer. There is a ridiculously rigid dress code in the restaurant, so beware.

Over the 3 days we were there, service was consistently poor. At breakfast our table (of 8) asked for extra coffee and were told to "ask your own waiter". Early evening no-one seemed able to make a decision as to when I could order food for my hungry child. We asked the receptionist for a local restaurant recommendation only to be told she did not like that particular kind of food.

to be fair i think this was the wrong hotel for my colleague and i , but we were placed here by our employer . the average age for clientelle here is probably close to 75, but the hotel does cast a certain imgae , one of a higher standard and tradition . we arrived 9.00 pm sunday and the lounge area was full of residents having late evening teas , doing jigsaws and reading , whilst in the lobby a grand piano was being professionally but discreetly played . but .. food is only served till 7.30 pm in the conservatory , unless you pay £25 per head and wear a shirt and tie(gents) to dine in the crystal restaurant , and even here only till 8.30 pm . room service stops at 8.30 pm . food is good quality , breakfasts are waiter served and satisfying just ask and they will provide . as for amenities , the two lifts are tiny ( two people and they are full) rooms are a little dated with actual blankets and not quilts . bathrooms seem very new , outdoor pool very nice to look at but seems quite deep (didnt go in as we werent back in time on an evening) CROQUET lawn ! , putting green , snooker room ( combined with storage room ) , spa , hairdresser . a definte plus is the fantastic view as the hotel is right on the raised sea front with great views along the south coast , especially as there was an airshow on when were there

On arrival there was a porter to take our cases to the rooms. The building is very fine with attractive gothic arches and a cosy library corner in one of the lounges. There are plenty of comfortable seats and grouped at a reasonable distance to ensure privacy. The tables in the dining room also had plenty of room around them. The highlight was the freshly cooked breakfast with thick slices of bacon or one could even have poached hadock. The dinner was a little disappointing for the price. Service was excellent at all times and we never had to wait too long. Our bed was extremely comfortable and the room was quiet at night thus affording a peaceful night's sleep. A distant sea-view too.

The views from the front and side of the hotel (looking out to Beachy Head and the sea) are worth asking for (we had been first given a dark room looking over the car park, not so good). The lawn has putting and croquet, which was rather nice, but the general feel is that of a convalescent home. But the fact that so many of the other guests were very elderly (at least 20 years on us) during our 4 day stay meant that the little heated outdoor pool was hardly used, and was a delight.

Visiting this charming hotel feels like stepping back in time. Taking tea in the garden while watching fellow guests play croquet is a relaxing Summer treat. My children loved swimming in the outdoor pool, it is very quiet and they often had the pool to themselves. The hotel staff are extremely polite and the food in the elegant Crystal restaurant is excellent! A children's tea is available in the conservatory for younger guests. Our family room had an adjoining room for the children with bunk beds (which I'm told were rather uncomfortable!) but our own bed was very comfortable. That particular room could use a fan in hot weather as opening the windows meant we were at the mercy of early morning seagull cries and some late night noise from the car park below. Breakfast was superb. Old fashioned and genteel, it is easy to see why this hotel is so popular with the 60+ crowd - they expect good service and they get just that at The Hydro! Beware of the uphill climb from the town/seafront back to the hotel. Gentlemen need to take a tie for dinner.

My wife and I spent 2 days at the Hydro recently with my elderly in-laws. After some underwhelming experiences in English seaside hotels, this came as a nice surprise. Thec hotel is well looked after, staff are friendly and welcoming and the seaview rom was quite acceptable. There is a lvely garden and heated out door swimming pool, but no pool towels are preovided.
Food is nicely presented and professionally served, although tyhe requirement for a tie(but no jacket) for gentlemen for diinner isomewhat dated.
This is by no means a cheap hotel but standards througout are good and their policy opf catering to a more mature clientele seems to be successful. So well done to everybody there.

We had a good stay here for 2 nights. The hotel is clean, tidy, very old fashioned and charming. The lounges and outside areas are comfortable and this must have once been a very grand place. The room we had was small for a double but it was great for walking in off the street and asking for a sea view room and priced accordingly.

Food was superb, we liked the atmosphere in the dining room especially at dinner where there was a relaxed formailty. Wonderful sea views from room which was comfortable and well appointed although ensuite was a bit on the small side. Everything was spotlessly clean and the staff were friendly and attentive. There was entertainment on two of the four evenings when we were there even though it was not quite high season. Lovely garden which was very well maintained. Great attention to detail both inside the hotel and outside.
Plenty of free parking either at the hotel or on surrounding streets.

This hotel is lovely. Very attentive staff, clean nicely decorated rooms and a fantastic position overlooking the seafront. However, the best thing about this hotel is the food! Took photos of all the puddings (!) as they were so nicely presented and tasted just as wonderful!

My husband and I have just returned from a weeks stay at the Hydro Hotel in Easbourne, having previously only stayed long weekends. We opted for a suite (Cuckmere), as we were there for the week, the room was amazing, the bed was huge (3 pillows long), the room was big compared to the others, and the little sofa in front of the window was well placed to make good use of the huge window looking out to what I can only discribe as a ever changing beautiful view.

My husband and I were one of the youngest residents most of the time (we are in our late 30's, early 40's), but it didnt bother us one bit, the other residents were lovely and the staff very polite. This hotel is a quiet laid back hotel, with charm. Dinner and breakfast were excellently served by the waiting staff, silver service at dinner and the option to have a full english or continental at breakfast. We ate in the Orangery one evening, I can only discribe this as the best meal I have ever eaten. It took two hours to eat all five courses, amazing.

If you are looking for a quiet laid back holiday where you are treated with respect, this is the place for you, there is no entertainment, no noisy bar (just a quiet cocktail bar). The hotel is a great place to relax and unwind, its location is good, a short walk will take you into the town and seafront, we didnt use our car for the week.

I love this hotel and thoroughly recommend it.

Hotel is old, charming and in a beautiful location. We had a sea-view room with a very comfortable king bed. The food included in the package was good, but one night we upgraded to their "fine-dining" restaurant and the food was incredible. They have a decent selection of wine. The best thing for us was the proximity to the Beachy Head hiking trails and the Eastbourne waterfront - great hiking!

Just had another wonderful stay at The Hydro. As always, incredible value for money - dinner bed and breakfast for £55 (side sea view room).
The dining room continues to be well managed with waiting staff who are attentive without being intrusive and ensure food gets to the table from the kitchen without delay.
The sitting room area is vast, so after a meal one can just flop and rest, chat to other guests if you want, or do the jigsaw (there is always a jigsaw for guests to while away their time)

We selected this hotel at random as we booked at the very last minute so got a good deal. We were very pleasantly surprised. It is in a beautiful location up on the cliffs overlooking the sea with a view of Beachy Head and only about a 10 minute walk into town for the more mobile. We loved the grounds of the hotel - croquet/mini putting lawn and garden patio and heated outdoor pool with nice loungers in secluded area. Good sized hotel car park and free street parking if full. We liked the ambience of the hotel with its traditional elegance and spaciousness. Although there was a wedding and a couple of small parties, there was always plenty of room in the various lounges for guests. we particularly liked the large conservatory. We agree that the hotel does attract some older less mobile guests but we did not find this a problem as there is so much space to spread out. The hotel is well maintained and beautifully clean and the staff were very helpful. Our room was not huge but perfectly ample in size with a hairdryer, trouser press and tea/coffee making facilities. The T.V was small but we didn't really use it. The decor was good and it was very clean. The food was excellent. For breakfast there is a small buffet of fruit, yoghurts and cereals as well as waiter service for a full breakfast. I especially enjoyed the smoked haddock! The evening meal was very good too. There was a good choice and everything was well presented and beautifully cooked. Even coffee was included which is rare these days. The service was good with a few minor problems which were quickly rectified when pointed out. We were also pleasantly surprised at the cost of the drinks. The bar prices were very reasonable and there were several bottles of decent wine in the £15-£20 price range on the extensive wine list.
We really enjoyed our 2 night break at The Hydro and found it to be excellent value for money. We will certainly return-

Booked for one night, but liked it,so we stayed for two. Both rooms were comfortable.Bath taps were very near the tiles,so might be difficult to use,if one had arthritis. We had breakfast at 7.40am,tables are crowded together, but the place was empty,so what on earth possessed the waiter to put the next couple and then a single man,at both adjacent tables.Picture the scene-a vast empty room, and 5 people on top of one another.I could literally see the smoked haddock going down the man`s throat. Not pleasant!
The evening meal, costing only £10 for 4 courses,if booked at same time as the room, was very good value. We plan to go again and hope the waiter is more savvy.Breakfast was good apart from this.
It is probably a hotel more suited to the older customer. That said.it was good to see large families there celebrating with 3 generations.

I love staying at the Hydro. OK, it isn't a place for young trendies, and it is more suited to those of a certain age than young families... but it is perfect if you want a quiet holiday with just a bit of class. It isn't a Five Star hotel, and doesn't pretend to be. However, the rooms are comfortable, the staff are polite and helpful, the service is good, the breakfast is excellent, the lounge menu is very good value, the garden delightful (with croquet and putting on the lawn). There is an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the beach... and parking is a doddle. The Hydro is always my first choice when looking for a hotel in Eastbourne.

me and my husband stayed at the hydro on our wedding night. the floor our room was on the landing was lined with matresses leaning up against the wall, it was like walking through their storage area!! thought this was very unproffesional!! the room itself was nice as was the breakfast. Our room had been previously paid for by our parents however when we checked out they gave us a lovely bill claiming that they had no record of payment!! We then had to wait around for the manager for 40 minutes and then as if by magic the receipt appeared!!! Was a very stressful stay!!

just come back from a one night stay at this hotel for my birthday from my husband.
well, what can i say, the whole place is very relaxing, the food out of this world with four courses. the room with sea view was gorgeous and we had a whirlpool bath too.
sussex room is the best if wanting to stay here.
the staff were excelent and the inside of this hotel is luxury.
went to beachy head and what a wonderful view.
weather was lovely and warm aswell so happy with getting the weather.
would definetly go back to the place , probably on our anniversary.
you can not fault this place at all.
well reccomended.
our room was really big with a large double bed and also a sofa in there with a coffee table and two other chairs with small table in the window overlooking the sea.
when we went for the meal in the evening we had our own table which was for your breakfast in the morning too.
four courses was brilliant and you was full up after.
men have to wear ties but that was ok and also there are alot of older people there than us , we are in our 40's but that didnt bother us as we love peace and quiet anyway.
see hydro hotel website , it shows a lovely pool aswell but not open because of the season. The town centre was a walk away but lovely walking along the seafront and had a lovely lunch.
You can have lunch and tea at this hotel aswell.
will be going back soon

Bit like nursing home.. but great service and very friendly staff.
We have just returned from a four night break in Eastbourne. First time we have visited the town and The Hydro hotel, think most guests having been going there for years and years.
We were disappointed that the average age seemed to be about 75! but everyone was so friendly and chatty including ALL the staff. We are early fifties so we managed but if you were alot younger than us it may well have put you off . We stayed in room 200 a wheelchair accessible room with 'wet-room' bathroom, which was fine but the bedroom is too small for a wheelchair to manoeuvre around and the lift is really small too, but it is a very old building so you must make allowances.
Beware! we had two wheelchairs with us, electric and manual and without the electric chair I would never have been able to push by husband up the STEEP hill to and from the hotel.
we left the chairs at the side entrance near the car park and they allowed us to charge the electric one very eveneing, the staff were excellent.

stayed with a group in a privately organised event at the Hydro.
disappointed with the room small and the view over a roof and
steel girders hardly awe inspiring but the time we spent in the room was minimal and the service from the staff was outstanding.
they are so friendly helpful nothing is too much trouble. There's always a member of the staff on around to help. For breakfast there was full English cooked to order .dinner four course .the food was served hot and presented well, every one on our table(11) enjoyed
their meals.
the bathroom was small with no bath only a shower and the lifts to the upper floors very small 4pers max. an oldie world hotel where service matters and not a patronising "have nice day" !!!!! enjoy etc.

I stayed her for one night (two days) on a training course.

I read the comments on here, and wasn’t expecting the hotel to be very good, personally though I though it was brilliant.

It is true that the hotel caters mainly for the older clientele, but all the guests seemed to be relaxed and having a good time. Though I did wonder what they did all day, seeing as their didn’t seem to be any entertainment (especially in the evening) for them.

My room was really nice, clean, warm and comfortable. I thought the décor was fine, and the room big enough for me. I had a beautiful view of Beachy Head, and the sea. The bathroom was a good size and very clean.

The customer service in the hotel was good, when I checked in they didn’t have a record of my reservation, but soon sorted that out with no real inconvenience to me.

The restaurant was very nice and the food was great.

The business service in the hotel seemed good, the rooms were supplied will all the required stationary. We were given refreshments and snacks at regular intervals. Waters and juice was always available.

The only slight negative about this hotel was the lifts, they were so small, I’m not sure how some with a disability would get around.

All in all I though the hotel was very good and have recommended it to family already.

We have stayed at the Hydro Hotel in Eastbourne several times, and this year it was just as enjoyable as ever. Admittedly it does attract many older people, but we had small children with us who loved the swimming pool, the children's teas in the conservatory, and the safety and freedom of the lovely garden with its putting green.

This is a comfortable hotel, offering old-style service and excellent meals with the staff welcoming back guests who return every year.
A popular location for weddings, too.

We had a lovely relaxing break at the Hydo over the Bank Holiday August weekend. The Hydro has a lovely garden where we enjoyed reasonably priced tea and sandwiches brought out by a waiter. It has an outdoor swimming pool, a lovely conservatory and a chandelier lit restaurant. The breakfast was great - English cooked to order and also buffet with cereals, fruit etc.
Lots of places to sit around in this hotel. Books and scrabble and jigsaws too. OK the decor is a bit dated but rooms are clean and the hotel is in a great location, overlooking sea, plentiful of parking and lots to do just in the hotel itself. Would suit older people and those with young children. Staff are pleasant and helpful. We really loved it and would certainly come back here. The M family, Essex
