The Dr Hadwen Trust are doing a magnificent job in bringing medical research into the 21st century. Their work is based on humane research which benefits humans and animals too. They have funded projects in some of the most advanced techniques relevant to humans including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma, kidney, heart and liver disease. It is a fact that millions of animals are experimented on, in the UK (and worldwide) every year, yet it is widely known that animal tests are totally misleading because for every 10 tests which pass successfully on animals, 9 fail on humans. All different species can react differently to the same chemical and furthermore even results within one species can vary enormously when tests are applied to different breeds, ages and gender. With such an appalling failure rate of medical research based on animal tests when applied to the human species it does not come as a surprise that in the UK there are 10000 deaths every year as a direct result of adverse drug reactions (BMJ 2004). Across Europe the figure is 197,000 deaths every year (European Commission, Brussels Memo, Dec 2008). For medical research to be effective for humans we need it to be relevant to the human species and the Dr Hadwen Trust are leaders in such innovative research.
