I'd say it was ok but not the best. It definitely needs to improve it's customer service.

We stayed 2 nights in December at the OGH, which seemed to be the best hotel in Guernsey. The location is excellent, very close to the city center. We asked for a room overlooking the harbor and balcony, which was assigned to us. Many thanks to Alberto, for his night work attending to our safety and to all the equipment (kitchen, housekeepers, etc). I will recommend it for sure.

We had a voucher to use, and had wanted to try the curry house for a while. At £45/head for the food plus £6-7/beer, its not somewhere I would go regularly. Firstly the service was 5 star. Very nice, friendly and helpful.
However the curry was good, but not amazing. We were asked if we wanted it hot and we both said yes, but both dishes were pretty bland. The portions were huge, too much to finish, but I would have rathered more quality than quantity. We were too full to bother with desert, even though it was paid for anyway.
We had a very pleasent evening, but at £140 for two peoples food with 3 drinks each, I want to be at least a bit wowed with flavours.

Popped in here on the off chance for lunch yesterday. Greeted superbly by the staff who arranged a very nice table overlooking the sea. Grandson had fish and chips daughter had the lobster soup and I had fillet of plaice with mash and veg and a pesto sauce. We all agreed the food was absolutely gorgeous but what made the whole experience worthwhile was the wonderful waiter we had in the restaurant. Afterwards we had a look around and this is definitely a very nice hotel...thank you.

Visited the Alpine Lodge with colleagues for a Christmas do. Lovely atmosphere, the warmest welcome, nice food, sumptuous chocolate fountain (thank you for sitting us next to it 😉). The best of all was as usual was the staff, and especially Maria for making sure everyone in the Lodge is comfortable and attended on time. Thank you, Maria, for your genuine smile and for making us all feel so good xxx

When looking for a 5 star hotel in Guernsey you aren’t left with many options, in fact it’s just the Old Government House so that’s your lot. All things considered it’s not a bad lot to be left with if you’re up for a hotel that embraces tradition, a sense of the past and a touch of glamour from yesteryear! Ok it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but we love it, mostly!

Rooms vary hugely in both style and size so take care when selecting your bedroom. We found the lead-in category rooms to be bright, well styled but just a little on the cramped size, a room category upgrade can give you so much more space and place you in a quieter location within the hotel. Staying in the summer heat also meant we were dependent on the AC which was patchy at best, but manageable. Overall we loved the old school feel of the hotel and the full sensory bombardment with bold clashing colours, patterns and clutter everywhere. Maybe this may grate over time but for a few days it was fun.

Dining at any of the hotels restaurants is always an event and the hotel embraces that sense of occasion. Lunch and dinner are popular amongst guests and visitors alike so can get busy. The biggest issue we found was to be with breakfast. The breakfast room itself is just lovely, with green and white striped fabric notes, a beautiful outlook over the gardens and when flooded with morning light it really does impress. The food offering is plentiful and will please any picky eaters and more than satisfy those looking for a full English! It’s the service where things tend to dip and that in a hotel of this standard it’s inexcusable. On two occasions our order was muddled, somethings arrived, others didn’t and items not ordered just appeared, which once is no problem but twice just painful. On the third morning one meal never arrived at all and the wait for condiments for the one that did so long the food went cold and had to be sent back. It’s clear with a high turn over of young (but enthusiastic) staff these problems are a constant issue for management to attempt to overcome.

So the hotel is lovely, and afternoons spent by the pool were welcome retreat after mornings on the beach. But the biggest asset for this hotel is its staff. Yes some lack confidence, training and a proper luxury hotel understanding, but all of them without question have warmth, kindness and the desire to please, which more than makes up for any real service issues. Highlights include the ladies on the front desk who were absolutely charming and the concierge whose realistic outlook on life was just too funny and left us in fits of giggles. For me the ability for staff to relate to their guests and the experience they are having is the real key to a great hotel and The Old Government House Hotel has that and more!

I was so looking forward to my trip to Guernsey and my time at The Old Government House hotel. Sadly, I have to say that my stay at this historic 5-star property fell flat. There was plenty of good, but too many little disappointments to give it a 5-star rating.

The good:
Quick response time to my inquiries before arrival
Beautiful property
Proximity to center of town
Large room
Some friendly staff (particularly one very friendly woman at the front desk)
Great massage treatment in the spa
Delicious dinner at La Brasserie
Hotel packed me a picnic lunch for my day of island exploration

The bad:
During check-in, the woman at reception repeated herself and asked me the same questions multiple times during check-in making me feel like she wasn't even listening.
Curry Room wouldn't seat me for dinner on my first night, even though they had multiple empty tables at 20:30.
My room still wasn't serviced at 15:00.
No one cleared my breakfast dishes, even though I lingered over a book at least 30 minutes after finishing.
No one to greet / seat me for my 15:00 afternoon tea reservation. When I was finally seated, I waited 20 minutes for someone to come and take an order.
No one was clearing towels at the pool, so there was no place to sit when I arrived late in the afternoon.
No pool service offered. I would expect a 5* hotel to have someone taking drink orders at the pool.

I had the pleasure of staying at The Old Government House. A decadent, old-world charm oozing luxury hotel, perfectly located a top of a hill in central St Peter Port. The hotel is full of character and charm of by-gone years - with a number of differing rooms, nooks and crannies - the crown club was a highlight.

I stayed in a classic double room which was tiny. The room was on the small side - however, the bed was to die for, probably the best nights sleep I have had in a long time. Breakfast was very good, fresh and delicious which added to the overall experience, although the service was lacking in all honesty. Unfortunately, service or lack of, was a theme which is a real shame.

Would I return, absolutely. Lovely hotel, full of character and a great location. Unfortunately, the weather was horrid but will return and hopefully make use of the outside pool!

Made to feel welcomed as soon as you walk through the door. As for house on the hill, the old government house is huge. The decor throughout is second to none. Food was out of this world and worth a visit just to try. Room had a lovely view of the harbour and adjustable aircon to keep the room warm on these wintery nights. Would definitely stay here again when I come back to the island. Also not far from the high street and local bars and restaurants.

What can you say about OGH except OUTSTANDING

Service from the moment you walk in till you go is above 5Star service

The manger in the morning at breakfast service is outstanding nothing is a problem he makes you feel so welcome as do all the staff

We had a meal from the Tennerfest menu and it was so good ( Chef the beef cheeks were the best I have ever had ) and for £20.00 for 3 courses was very good value

Breakfast the choice is very good and all cooked fresh

Without doubt one of the best hotels I have been in for service and style and I am looking to have a stay in one of the other hotels in the chain as I was so impressed

Stayed at the OGH recently for 4 nights for our wedding anniversary. From the offset when we booked the staff were in touch to see if they could help in any way. Every staff member was friendly, helpful and could not do enough for us. The room we had (118) was fantastic, large, lovely view and as clean as any hotel room I have ever stayed in. I would also recommend the Brasserie restaurant which was great. Very well located for central Port St Peter and a short walk to the bus station

We went for a tennerfest in the Brasserie on a rainy Sunday afternoon, the best way to relax. We haven't been to the Brasserie part before, so we were really looking forward to our meals.

Staff were attentive and very friendly, a happy smile goes a long way. Also, we didn't have to wait long for our orders to come through, which is a plus when you come hungry.

The sea bass was delicious and the beef cheeks looked really good as well. For desserts we chose to have a cheesecake and if you like cheesecake, you will definitely enjoy this tennerfest menu!

Again, thank you very much to your hardworking team, we had an excellent afternoon and good luck.

My sister and I recently stayed here for four nights. This is one of the finest, if not the finest, hotel I have ever visited. The building is magnificent and it is furnished throughout with such care and attention and some absolutely gorgeous antiques. The food was just stunning, we ate in the Brasserie and in the Indian, and enjoyed every morsel of every course. However, the very best thing of all was the service. Every single person working in the hotel was so helpful, courteous and friendly - it is invidious to mention names really but two of the ladies on reception who we encountered most - Illa and Sinead were really kind, and Andrew (Barns) was so very helpful and informative - we felt we made friends there - everything was comfortable and easy, exactly what you want whilst you are away - no stresses - everything taken care of. The Red Carnation Hotel Group should be very proud of this hotel and their staff - will not be the last time we stay there (and indeed look forward to visiting more hotels in the group) As I say, more than 5* in every way.

If you want to see how a hotel should be run then come to OGHH in Guernsey.
We had stayed at many hotels on this 6 week trip but nothing can compare to this amazing hotel. We were to spend four nights here but this was cut to 3 when we were left in Jersey with no accommodation due to a ferry cancellation ( take note as this happens a lot).
This stay was the best of anywhere we stayed & have stayed. We have stayed in many of the Red Carnation hotels but feel this is the best of them.
Following a check in & glass of bubbly we had a lovely tour of the hotel with Roberto( who was a great friend by the end of the stay - a great asset) & then to our spectacular room. I don't think there is anything that this hotel can do better.
The room was spotless ,classy & contained everything we could hope for & more. Items used were quickly replaced & lovely individual treats were left each night. Towels, toiletries, tea, coffee all plentiful & top notch.
If there was anywhere in the world we would love to return to it would be here! That may not be possible but we will always remember our time here!

I'm a difficult old s** to please but the Old Government House ticked every box during our long weekend stay in Guernsey.
From a lovely welcome when we arrived early from the airport, guided tour by the concierge (think it was Roberto) a comfortable room and variety of spaces to eat, drink and relax throughout the hotel, we were made to feel completely at home.
Also some nice touches like the curry room restaurant, a small spa and gym plus an outdoor heated pool, the facilities provided everything we could have wanted.
Located on the edge of St Peter Port town centre, so also very convenient.
Topping it off, staff throughout the hotel were fantastic and looked after us faultlessly.
5 stars in every respect - will be back.

Like in British movies. Nice building and garden, original architecture, very friendly staff. We enjoyed the sunny summer weather and the many flowers around us. In downtown. We liked this hotel very much!

A very old style hotel as you’d expect. The classic room was small as was the double bed. Staff were great and lovely breakfast room and garden to eat in if weather permits. At £202/ night I’d say it was not really VFM. Nice ish gym and spa - all massages were booked so you should Pre book them. Smart Indian restaurant as well as Brasserie but didn’t try them. Very near the Tapestry museum and crown court which is well worth a visit!

Just back from 3 wonderful nights at this hotel. From the time you walk through the door till the time you leave you are made to feel like the most important guests in the hotel. We were given a glass of wine when we arrived whilst waiting to check in and a special mention to Stuart and Jaro they are amazing members of staff. They gave us lots of information about the island and the tour of the hotel was brilliant with lots of stories on route. We stayed in room 315 which was lovely. The bedding was wonderful and the beds really comfortable. Plenty of choice at breakfast and service was excellent. We only had the one meal in the evening and that was outstanding; again the service was exceptional. Pay a visit to the gin bar. Sitting out on the veranda was great. Every member of the staff in the hotel was so friendly and helpful. Thanks for such an amazing visit.
