Incredibly interesting museum. We visited during the Doctor Who exhibition and it was fun being exterminated by a dalek. The geology section of the permanent exhibit was really well done and it was fascinating learning about the human history of the region over the millennia. The staff were very friendly and helpful.Visited on

A bright and up to date place to experience Somerset's history in historic surroundings.

There is a lot here to enjoy and for free! (donations encouraged).

Im a nerd for history and enjoyed the detail covering how Somerset wnet from a coral sea with dinosaurs, through ice ages of wooly rhinos, wolves and bears through to more modern timesw with some really lovely and important historical artefacts from roman through to anglo-saxon and the viking periods.i wont spoil it but check out the photos for some examples.

There are family areas for a bit more interaction for.children and a mice cafe where you can have a cup of tea outside or in.

When I went there was a Dr Who exhibit and a separate military museum.

I had a very enjoyable 2 hours or so here.

Parking is available nearby.

This is one of the best smaller museums I visited in England. The collections are diverse and beautifully displayed in a fascinating old building. The diversity means there is something for everyone to enjoy. Everything from Natural History to Roman to the Bloody Assizes on to Georgian - and it’s FREE! Loved the room with the literary quotes.

I've visited many times. It's a fantastic place to visit in Taunton, either with family or on your own/to meet friends. High quality exhibitions, fun range of activities for children throughout the year and a fantastic cafe... and, of course, a great way to learn all about the history of Somerset in the setting of a castle. What's not to love?

The staff are super friendly and helpful too!

During a two night trip to Somerset, the weather was awful, so an indoor attraction was essential. However, turns out that the poor weather was to our advantage. The museum is very well curated, starting with Jurassic fossils, and one of the best Roman mosaics I’ve seen. The floors of the museum lead upwards towards the modern days. The cafe is well stocked for a rest stop on the way.

An unexpected gem. We popped in with our three children because it was raining and we spent a wonderful couple of hours here. It's well curated with lots of finds. A couple of sizable hoards, some Roman mosaics and the South Cadbury Shield were our favourites. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.Visited on

You have to remember that you can visit this place for FREE! And for a couple of hours you can find the most wonderful exhibitions which will suit the appetites of the youngest to oldest. We were lucky enough to visit in the last week of the Pompeii exhibit on loan from the tate. What a treat. Such experienced and welcoming guides are dotted around the building. The multi media exhibit about the Romans were captivating. I didn't take many photos - too busy taking it all in. I will come back for sure. Thank you so much to the dedicated team who made our visit so enjoyable.

By far the best exhibit at the moment is the John Martin room, especially the painting 'The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum'
Loved the atmosphere created with the sounds of volcanic eruptions whilst looking at the apocalyptic pictures.
Very knowledgeable guide who recanted the story of John Martin's rise as an artist.
Free to enter.
The military exhibition is also an excellent collection of artefacts especially the old photographs.
