I visited the Palazzo restaurant in Chelmsford this evening. The restaurant is located in the busy area opposite the bus and train station. It is a mid sized restaurant with a number of car parks nearby.
Il Palazzo was not busy but the staff were very welcoming and helpful. The menu is extensive and a comprehensive drinks menu is also available with a selection of wine by the bottle or a house wine available by the glass. Draught lager is also available.
The food on offer is a typical selection of Italian food with meat, pizza, pastas, fish, etc aswell as a selection of specials.
I ordered meatballs in tomato sauce and garlic bread with cheese as a starter. It was a tasty dish and served as a decent sized portion. The main was however superb - fish stew with a selection of very tender squid, mussels, prawns, vegetables, garlic and a tasty sauce served with bread. Another good portion of food with plenty of flavour and I could have eaten it again.
A refreshing vanilla panna cotta desert finished my meal and was light and tasty.
A very enjoyable meal with the Sardinian fish stew the star of the show. I found Il Palazzo to be a good restaurant although it is not the cheapest. I may return here if the opportunity presents itself but it is likely to be infrequent.
Service was excellent throughout and I was not hurried at all. The food was delivered quickly and fresh and I would recommend the restaurant overall.

Three of us had booked to go and see/ listen to the show at the theatre, needing a light bite we decided to try this place as it was just up the road, what a good choice!! The staff were really welcoming and even though we had not booked it was no trouble, we had the garlic bread with cheese as a starter and it was more than enough for three, main courses were simple but good, although the carbonara was not as creamy as it could have been, better another time maybe, well worth a visit and we will be back again for sure, great value!!

Good choice for my wife's birthday meal. Nice spacious italian, atmospheric, decor a bit cheesy but look beyond this cos the food's good. Sardinian fish stew was really good and my wife's veal beat her!

We tried Il Palazzo, Chelmsford for the first time yesterday. Table for 4 on an early booking at 6.15pm. Not in a great part of Chelmsford but if you’re being dropped off and collected, that’s not a problem. Food was good with a wide choice available, service OK but maybe lacking enthusiasm and restuarant was very spacious with plenty of room between tables. (unlike Olio’s in town which is cramped).
The only letdown was our waiter insisted I could not put the gratuity on my card with the bill. Cash only he said. Like many people I don’t carry a lot of cash nowadays and so I explained this and left what I could which was about half of what I would have tipped had I been able to use my card. On our way out the (apparent)manager asked me how things were, I told him good but consider changing the cash only tipping policy, and he told me we were able to put the tip on the card if we wanted to! So I left with the feeling that our waiter had not been not honest with us. The management should address this tipping issue so customers are clear on what they can and can’t do. Apart from that, the whole experience was quite good and we will return.

There was nothing disastrously wrong , but it could have all been better . the calamari was under cooked and could have done with 30sconeds longer in the fryer, we had asked for olives before our starters but they never turned up . My crab salad was nice but you had to play hunt the crab as it was all in very small peace's through out the salad leaves. The main course was also brought out within what seemed 2 minuets of us finishing our starter, where a 10 minuet gap would have been more fitting.

We went to il palazzo today, 4 adults 2 children, and I have to say it was a lovely evening. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, tables were cleared quickly, the wine was topped up at the right time all the food was delivered with excellent timing. Please keep in mind this was all on a Saturday night in a busy restaurant . The food was of very good quality, cooked very well with lots of Italian flavour . In all a very pleasant night with lots of food at a reasonable price, as an italian I would recommend anyone thinking of going to do so without hesitation . Very well done and thank you il palazzo for a lovely night .

I have to say I was very impressed with the menu, the prices and the customer service. The Italian options are very extensive. My meatballs were delicious. My veal was extremely tender with all the side cooked aldente. No complaints from around the table, beautiful white house wine and nice to see an alternative to Peroni on draft. My favourite restaurant in Chelmsford, not that I have tried many!

Second time we have been here as our previous experience was very good. We were celebrating our Anniversary and like before we were greeted at the door by a very welcoming waiter. As we were eating early evening in the Restaurant it was quite, so not a lot of atmosphere but had lovely background music playing. We would think that later evening and weekends the atmosphere would be very good The menu was extensive and the food we choose was lovely again with excellent waiter service. Altogether a good evening.

we are fans of Olio's both in Writtle and the town center however we decided to give II Palazzo a try and we were nicely surprised, the food was lovely and portions were good and the service was efficient and friendly. If your up that end of town or fancy a quick bite when you come off the train then I would very much recommend you pop in.

Called in at this restaurant today for lunch. No one else there. Very smart and clean.
Waiter welcomed us immediately. Food really reasonably priced - I had the spinach and mushroom fritata and my friend had the vegetarian pizza. Proper linen napkins. Food great and fresh. Waiter just the right amount attention - would definitely go there again. And as Mark D of Mother and son lunch said 'wash rooms excellent clean'.

We were looking for a good Italian restaurant, not a chain, for my son's birthday dinner - he does love his spag bol. We were not disappointed - the spag bol was great, but the monkfish was even better. Good, friendly service and we will definitely return.

Visited the restaurant yesterday for the second time, and on both occasions service and food was good. It seems that the smaller Italian restaurants do a better job then the large chains. The first time I had the monk fish, which comes highly recommended. Yesterday I had the risotto with scallops and pepperoni, which was very nice and tasty. The staff is very attentive, and atmosphere is cosy.
If you want Italian food in Chelmsford, try this one before some of the bigger chains.

5 family members with only an hour before the theatre started and the restaurant could not have done more. Well organised staff were able to cater for our request for a speedy service whilst delivering great meals with little fuss. Highly recommended

This was a return visit for my wife and me but this time with other family members. As previously, the service was attentive but unobtrusive and the food excellent. We tried some of the Dishes of the Day and were not disappointed evidenced by the empty plates. Definitely now on our eating out in Chelmsford short list.

Our third visit to this lovely restaurant popped in for lunch on Sunday very quiet. However it has a nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. Lots of choice on the menu with some set menus for reasonable prices. I had the calamari which was delicious and plentiful for main I had sea bass which was also very tasty. £18.95 for 2 courses. Didn't have sweet but there were some tempting choices I will be back to sample.
