We use to eat here when it was the family run restaurant. We'd always had great fun at a great price, and so we were curious about if the new owners could keep this up. When we got there I realised that I'd already eaten in their Southend restaurant. It was an experience I'd enjoyed, and so was looking forward to it.
The restaurant has been updated and extended, with a more modern feel to it. There's plenty of seats and the seats themselves are comfy. It was a good start, and we were hoping the food would be as good.
And it was everything we could want. The service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing. The food was excellent. I had the prawn cocktail (which there was lots of) and the saltimbocco with a lovely sauce. The wife had tagliatelle as she believes that's a good measure of an Italian restaurant. Everything was perfectly cooked, with generous portions. So much so, the wife couldn't finish her main.
A two course meal for two and a bottle of wine for just over £50 pounds. Great value, great service, great food, we will be back.

We've wanted to try this place for a while. Had a lovely meal starters if prawns and the mozzarella was very tasty. The mains were also delicious... although the steamed vegetables with sea bass did seem a little odd.
Excellent and attentive waiting staff and Sat the manager was very friendly. We will return as the whole evening was very pleasant.

Hubby and I visited this lovely place a couple of weeks back so as all the grown kids were busy Fathers Day - I took him for a treat.
The food is lovely, the service is excellent and the restaurant is delightfully cool on what was an extremely hot day!
Definitely recommend and will return 👌

Was realky looking firward to the food after reading great reviews and seeibg lots of great tweets, but left slightly disappointed. Nothing bad but high expectations weren't met.
Had sardines and baked goats cheese and beetroot to start. Sardines were great just covered in some bright yellow sauce. Beetroot was straight out of a jar.
Mains had monkfish and veal. Lovely fish but again covered in neon sauce which wasn't great. Veal was waffer thin and had a odd gravy with it. Supposed to have two veg but one piece of broccoli just does go down well.
Nice house wine, good waiting staff however was served by 4 different people. Nice atmosphere although one female staff member looked like she didn't want to be there, head in hands and yawning slot!
Will cone back to try pizza and pasta for a second chance.

We turned up without booking on a busy Saturday night, but they still managed to find us a table. We had great service throughout and thoroughly enjoyed the pizzas and wine, certainly worth a visit.

We arrived fairly early in the evening. There were ten in our party and it was mid week so the restaurant was fairly empty. Starters arrived fairly promptly but the mains took ages and they had got the a couple of the orders wrong. Food was just ok nothing special.

So first of all and mostly importantly the most friendliest of waiters around!!!
They show their presence at all times without pestering.
Their knowledge of the menu was perfect. They all smiled the whole night.
I would have been chufffed even if the food was bad but it was absolutely perfect also!!
It's safe to say after a year of living in Chelmsford this is our favourite restaurant by far.
Thanks for an awesome night fellas!! I encourage you all to try it

We went for dinner with friends, friendly welcome, starters were ok. Our friends had ordered monkfish and it was fine. Our lasagne arrived and was cold in the middle, they took it away and we waited for a replacement.
It was ok- more paste than sauce.Overall a nice meal . Xxx

A fantastic authentic Italian restaurant.
The menu is vast and well priced. Why eat at an Italian chain restaurant when you can get proper, good sized Italian food at less cost?
No brainer to visit here.Have tried the pasta, pizzas and main dishes. All fantastic and recommended.
Service is great too.

29 of us had a fantastic evening at Il Palazzo. Sam, the manager was great at organising everything for us in advance and suggested a really nice set price menu to suit our party. On the night nothing was too much trouble. The staff were friendly and attentive and Sam made us all feel very special. The food was excellent and the recommended wines went down well! I would highly recommend this restaurant and it's great at dealing with a big party.

Went here Saturday 6th May with another couple. the service was excellent and the staff were very friendly and efficient. We were not hurried through our meal at any stage and the atmosphere was great. Our party had Monkfish X 2, Sea Bass and lamb shank. All were cooked to perfection, even the vegetables. The House red was a nice choice and good value. we are regulars at Olio's and this restaurant matches it in every way. we will be returning.

Really nice place with such a good variety on the menu to choose from. I ordered the mushroom + scallop bake for starters. Usually when you go to a restaurant and order scallops, the portions tend to be a tad stingy. Not here though, my starter was delicious and absolutely loaded with scallops. The staff done there best to accommodate my indecisive mood when it came to drink selection and went to the bar to show what choices they had. For mains I had the Calzone which was huge and brimming full of flavor. There were some very unpleasant guests in the middle of the restaurant who were being loud, rude and harassing a female member of staff. This obviously isn't the restaurants fault and the staff done very well at challenging them. The bill was perhaps a tad expensive but I had a great meal so can't really complain. Can't wait to return.

For us Il Palazzo has passed us by, lost amongst the deluge of bars and takeaways along Duke Street (Kebab alley); which is a real shame because we visited for the first time on Wednesday night and had a great time. The food was really tasty, well presented and well priced. The service was attentive but not OTT - it seems to be one or the other elsewhere nowadays - and although quiet when we arrived at 6pm but soon filled with a mix of couple and families out to enjoy some tasty Italian food.
Il Palazzo is no longer lost amongst the bars, takeaway pizzas and kebabs of Dukes Street; it's a delight we've discovered, make sure you do too.

When I read "Family run Italian restaurant" I expected an Italian family to run the restaurant. Mind you, they do not lie: it is a family run restaurant, and they do offer Italian food, but....they are not Italian, and it shows. Starting with the way the menu is written: the Italian word for starters is "Antipasti", not "Primi piatti" and "Primi piatti" are things like pasta or soup...I found a lot of the comments misleading...it is not authentic, it is not the best Italian food.
The food is OK, nothing special, but for instance no restaurant in Italy would serve their main courses with a few watery boiled carrots and broccoli. Italian vegetables are varied and can be cooked in much more interesting ways.Perhaps they would say that they are "doing what their public wants" and perhaps they are, but I see it as a compromise and an easy way out. I had some rice to go with my main (a very un Italian thing to do!!) and that was very watery too, it simply had not been drained properly. Shame. One thing I strongly agree with is that their staff is very attentive and friendly, the service very good and efficient.
So if I just wanted to go to a restaurant to have something to eat I would go back there, but if I wanted to experience proper Italian food I would not.

Wife and I decided to give this new place a try. Food was very good service was also good my only complaint was it was cramped the tables where to close to each other making it impossible to have private conversations shame as everything else was spot on Will not go back as Olio,s does the same type of food at the same price but better service and more space.

My husband and I went here last night to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary - The food was tasty I had the a starter from the specials board - Gnocchi it was very light, my husband had a crab starter from the menu which was also good, we both had pasta dishes for mains which were equally good. The service is also reasonable. On the down side the place does get very busy before shows at the theatre and a little later on which made it rather noisy and the tables are rather close together - we were by the window but still the table next to us could hear everything we said and we could hear what they were saying to so I was not too happy that we could not have a private conversation! Walking through the restaurant to get to the toilet was difficult too as there is not much space between tables to walk around. Will I be going there again I dont think so I can eat elsewhere with food that is just as good and with more space around me.
