I know the pier from almost 30 years ago and have to say that it is unfortunately a little old. Somehow the atmosphere from back then was no longer present, but maybe it was just the time of year or because I simply perceived the place differently when I was younger. Still a very nice place.Visited on

Eastbourne Pier is a popular Victorian landmark located on the southern coast of England, in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Here is an objective review of the pier:

Pros:

1. Historical Charm: Built in 1870, the pier retains much of its Victorian architecture, making it a visually appealing structure and a nostalgic experience for visitors.

2. Views and Photography: The pier offers stunning views of the sea and Eastbourne seafront, making it a great spot for photography.

3. Dining Options: There are a few cafés, restaurants, and bars on the pier, including an iconic tea room, offering refreshments with a view.

4. Recreation: Visitors can enjoy traditional amusements, such as arcades, which add a fun element for families and children.

5. Accessibility: Its central location on Eastbourne's seafront makes it easily accessible from the town centre and other nearby attractions.

Cons:

1. Limited Activities: Compared to larger piers in places like Brighton or Bournemouth, Eastbourne Pier has fewer attractions and activities.

2. Commercialisation: Some visitors feel that the pier has lost a degree of its charm due to a focus on commercial ventures rather than preserving its original Victorian ambiance.

3. Maintenance: While efforts have been made to restore parts of the pier, some areas might feel dated or in need of further upkeep.

Overall Impression:

Eastbourne Pier is a quintessential seaside attraction with historical significance. While it may not be as bustling or modern as larger piers, its charm lies in its simplicity, stunning views, and nostalgic atmosphere. It’s worth a visit for a leisurely stroll, a cup of tea, or just to soak in the seaside ambiance.

Our visit was very early in the year when most of the shops, etc on the pier were closed but, as it was a sunny day, we still went for the walk. It was well worth, not only to look at the architecture of the pier itself but also for the magnificent views along the shore and back to the town. We even stopped for a while to watch some hardy fishermen (in their own reserved part) braving the cold. It was so cold that even the seagulls had not thought it worth the effort to fly away and just stood and watched as you approached. Unfortunately, but I can understand why, dogs are not allowed.

Great traditional pier with the beat chip shop in the UK. All chips and ffod are fried from scratch, and they never cook the chips in the same oil as anything else which is great for: lactose, gluten, barley, and oat intolerances, and fish allergies (me).
