Th Hydro was a very pleasant surprise and a truly traditional hotel - very "Eastbourne". In an age of standardisation with Premier Inn, Hilton and Hyatt taking over the hotel market, it is wonderful to stay in a seaside hotel with old fashioned values of quality. As a frequent business traveller, vanilla flavoured hotels are a safe bet but you miss so much character and personality of hotels like the Hydro.

On the important things, cleanliness and service, everything was tip top. The view and surroundings were wonderful.

The food was just ok. I asked for a medium cooked steak but it was well and truly done... The breakfast was fine.

At first the atmosphere is a little stuffy. The restaurant is a little intimidating with clientele who clearly enjoy dressing up for dinner. Nothing against that but it does mean they lose business of regular business travellers. However, once you start talking to the staff they are open and friendly.

Large suite (the Sussex Room) was very comfortable. Radiators cranking out the heat but I cracked open the windows. Very big, but soft, bed. Only real complaint was the shower was a bit feeble.

In summary, traditional but not pretentious, good value and a reminder of days gone by when customers were valued

Our third stay at this very friendly hotel in a quiet and beautiful part of Eastbourne. We have 2 quiet, well behaved dogs who are always made welcome. The food is delicious, whether served in the restaurant, lounge or conservatory with the added bonus of prompt room service if preferred. We were spoiled this trip by an upgrade to a suite! Views looking out to sea were splendid with the added bonus of beautiful sunshine & unseasonal temperatures.
We look forward to our next stay at the Hydro.

Our second stay at The Hydro in the South Downs Suite, this time for three nights to take in our wedding anniversary plus a boost before stem cell replacement treatment for my husband.
It was lovely to settle into the comfort of the suite again. On leaving, I managed to have a peep at the newly refurbished Downslands Suite, which is now very smart and modern but to be honest, prefer the older elegance of the South Downs, so hope this is not lost should it also be refurbished!
Again, we were impressed with the choice of vegetarian dishes in the Crystal Restaurant but were a little disappointed to see that the dessert menu still doesn’t specify which ones are vegetarian/vegan! We also found the three courses included in the winter coastal offer a bit too much to manage - perhaps there could be another offer with just two courses?
As before, the staff were friendly, atttentive and the manager, Jonathan Owen, very approachable and happy to chat, all a credit to the hotel. And we would like to wish all the best to the lovely lady in the restaurant for the birth of her baby in May.

This Hotel was very clean (it looked newly refurbished), the staff were extremely polite and helpful and the food was excellent. I asked for my bacon well cooked at breakfast which they managed on the first morning but not the second. The evening menu had plenty of choice, the vegetarian option was particularly good (Im not a vege but liked the sound of it), sweet potato and cashew nuts. The portions are a good size too. It is at the top of a very steep hill so some may find the walk back from town difficult but because of the elevation the veiws were spectacular.

We enjoyed a great B&B overnight stay in a room with a lovely sea view, plus afternoon cream tea. Impeccable service from every member of staff, everything beautifully clean and well presented. Good location for an easy refreshing walk into town. Would definitely return.

Beautiful old hotel, like a set for an Agatha Christie story and beautifully kept gardens. Excellent service with beautiful, delicious food. Try the afternoon tea. We had a suite with a sea view, really peaceful. Highly recommended.

We hadd an afternoon tea for four while staying in the area. The hotel was very accomodating to my wife's gluten free requirements and served a whole gluten free afternoon tea and also replaced my fruit scone with a plain one as requested. The main restaurant was full but they managed to give us a table outside of the restaurant without any issues. The whole tea was excellent with the cakes especially good. We would definitely visit again if in the area.

Rooms have been well renovated, if you have a sea view it's really nice. The reception and lobby is really dated but it's clean and the staff are friendly. For the price it's what we expected, middle range. Lots of older folks seem to be enjoying the lunch and high teas. Breakfast was good and worth the extra cost.

We stayed at the Hydro for one night and we had a lovely time. The room was immaculately clean and the bedding was crisp and fresh. Staff were very attentive and helpful and it was very noticeable how good they were with the more elderly guests. The resident pianist playing whilst we had dinner was an extra treat!! - Thanks to everyone at The Hydro

I attended the wine tasting event on Friday evening, and found the venue to very well suited for the activity. The presenter, Francois, gave a very informative and jovial presentation of South African wines, and the cheeses provided were excellent. Our party had a great time, thank you to everyone at the Hydro for making this a great occasion.

We stayed here for a few days in February. It is an elegant hotel which has been kept up together. From the minute we checked to when we left we had an warm welcome and excellent service throughout our stay . The staff at reception and in the restaurant and conservatory were helpful and friendly .Nothing was to much trouble . The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The cream tea which was served in the conservatory overlooking the sea was amazing . The hotel is well used by local groups which is a good sign but is never too crowded . Lots of cosy places to relax. So nice to have a hotel not owned by a chain and you can certainly tell this from how it is kept up together and how they look after their staff . We will definitely be back .

This is the second time we have stayed here and I don't think we would stay in any other hotel in Eastbourne. The staff are very friendly and the rooms are nice and clean, request a Seaview room! well worth the few extra pounds. There are lots of activities in the hotel but we havent been to any as we use it as a base for walking. Having the cream tea in the conservatory is a must! lovely warm scones and they don't mind changing one of the teas to a diet coke at no extra cost! Breakfast is nicely done, plenty of choice and fresh! Restaurant staff are pleasant and efficient. We have visited in January and February months and it was busy but not noisy, plenty of room in the lounges for everyone, lots of lovely seating areas. Well worth a visit.

Spent a night at the Hydro to celebrate Valentines. On check in we were kindly upgraded to a sea view room.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful throughout.

The hotel may not suit everyone as it’s fairly traditional in look and feel but that is part of it’s charm. The room was clean and well maintained, as was the rest of the property.

Great value too. We may well be back.

My wife, son and I all stayed in the hotel for one night. The staff here are extremely friendly and very warm. The room was large and comfortable albeit a little dated but the view across the sea was superb. We were extremely lucky with the weather!

The bathroom was a good size and had everything we needed but it was a little grubby.

Our breakfast was very good and the hot food was a highlight. This is hotel definitely worthy of a night or two in Eastbourne if you're looking for something very nice.

We joined 12 others for an afternoon tea for a friend’s 80th birthday
The service was good and the staff friendly.
The afternoon tea was delicious and there was plenty to eat
The fruit tarts and chocolate eclairs were particularly good
They even offered little boxes to us to take home leftovers!
The tea was served in a conservatory overlooking the sea with a good view despite the rather dull day
Highly recommended
Thank you

We received an overnight stay at the Hydro Hotel as a gift from our children. What
a lovely surprise when we were upgraded to a Suite. It was superb. What a hotel.
Wonderful service. Beautiful with stunning views of the sea. Our only
regret that we didn`t have a longer stay. The food was amazing. Especially
enjoyed our cream tea in the conservatory. All the staff were brilliant from the warm
welcome of he receptionist to the waiters and waitresses. Would love to return. Thanks to everyone. We trust your hotel continues to have lots of visitors . Re:- questions about disabled facilities. I`m sure you offer this but can`t be specific with my
answers.

We frequently visit family in eastbourne and tend to return to the same hotel. This booking was done by my sister in law who had constantly complained about our previous choice. I have to say I loved the Hydro. This was our first visit but we will definitely return. All the pleasure of the sea without the dreadful parking on the sea front. They even have a car park. Lovely and extremely comfortable room, a window that opens (oh joy) and a fridge in the room (literally discovered on leaving but don't you hate those tiny milks? I'll take a pint next time). The conservatory was lovely and I'll look forward to reading the paper over a coffee. Staff, without exception were courteous and helpful. One star deducted for a pretty poor shower and slightly shabby furniture in our room but the bed was huge and superbly comfortable. Looking forward to going back.
The icing on the cake for my husband was that breakfast was cooked to order. No hard eggs and slimy bacon. A truly lovely hotel with a great deal of charm x

My girlfriend and I returned to the hotel for our second stay over the past weekend. We love the hotel's close proximity to the South Downs Way for walking and the wonderful elevated views out to sea. Both the Saturday afternoon tea and the Sunday morning breakfast were excellent.

I'm a committee member for a local networking group. We changed our venue to The Hydro hotel last year and what a difference it has made for our members! All the staff are extremely courteous, attentive and their service is impeccable. I now choose to meet clients and friends at The Hydro for that extra special welcome and service.

We had a lovely time there for the New year package that they offered. Was well worth the money and the food and entertainment was very good. Only complaint was the pillows were very hard and the room we had was above the restaurant so heard some noise when the celebrations were over while the room was put back to normal. Would I stay again most definitely.

The Hydro is an old traditional hotel which has kept it's original character but is decorated to a high standard. We were upgraded to a side sea view which was lovely. All the staff were very efficient and polite and couldn't do enough for you. A cream tea in the conservatory was divine and a lovely pint of Harveys bitter at the bar! We will definitely go back
