Just my luck that I turned up on the first day of winter opening hours and so it was closed...The moral of the story is check the English Heritage website rather than relying on Google maps as it was showing the wrong hours. I still got to walk in the grounds and peek in to the interior and the castle does look pretty impressive. Seems to be mostly ruins but the site is huge and pretty impressive.

Great welcome -although you walk quite a way around the castle to the entrance .
We took our 5 year old granddaughter but my husband used the audio guide and relayed lots of interesting ( and sometimes quirky) information to us .
It really gives a picture of what life in the Bailey would have been like . The exhibition is small but explains a lot .
Well worth a visit especially if you are English heritage members .
