First time visiting Eastbourne, having got the direct train from Ashford (Kent). This is a very impressive modern building with many interesting features. Check out the passenger lift, which is enormous because it's also used for large exhibits. The photographic exhibition 'A Green and Pleasant Land' was of mixed quality IMHO, but worth seeing, and the display spaces on the 2nd Floor are exemplary. There is a large building site adjacent which at present mars the approach from the seafront, but the proximity of the Winter Gardens and Devonshire Park makes for an attractive setting.

We vivisted with parents as they like art. the exhibitions were free at the time and kept the parents amused. The bonus was that there was also a childrens room with toys, books and exhibitions, so the visit kept them amused too. Well worth a visit. It's a nice venue too.

Definitely a must go to when in Eastbourne. I was sad to miss the Ravillious but a very fascinating exhibition had replaced it which was well worth seeing. They have a lovely little shop but definitely need more space in the cafe. A brilliant gallery worth supporting and usually free.

We only ended up visiting this gallery because it was raining!
What a shallow reason for visiting this fantastic place !!
The Ravilious exhibition was superb, make sure you visit !!!

By chance while recently visiting Eastbourne we saw lots of people heading for what turned out to be the Towner Art Gallery. I have to admit we hadn't heard of Ravilious but when other visitors recommended we "don't miss it" we visited the Towner on 2 occasions. One to see Ravilious and another to see the other 2 exhibitions - we also visited the excellent café. Eastbourne are lucky to have such an Art Gallery it certainly was an educational visit for us.

Interesting and well curated exhibition about Ravillious and his wider circle. Reflecting the time he lived in and the mix of country meets industry gave the exhibition a wider aspect both physically through his work and an historical perspective.

The cafe is probably better visited earlier than I did as it was rammed with older people and their day sacks - strategically placed on chairs for their friends - whatever can they have in them?

A friend and I spent a couple of hours recently enjoying browsing around the Eric Ravilious and friends art exhibition. It was probably the biggest display of this wonderful artists work ever displayed. It was very reasonably priced and the staff were accommodating.
It told the story of this mans work over his life and gave a great insight into the man behind the paintings. I learned such a lot that I didn't know before.
We could have had refreshments in the Urban Underground coffee shop but it was extremely busy so decided against this.
Sadly the exhibition finishes tomorrow so if you have plans to visit there is only a short time left. It is an excellent way of spending a couple of hours in the warm, and dry atmosphere of the Towner Art Gallery. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.

The Ravilious show at The Towner is worth travelling many miles to see if you are at all interested in Sussex modernism. The exhibition places Ravilious' work in the context of the time and of his contemporaries, friends and lovers. I felt I learnt far more at this show than at the recent Dulwich retrospective. The Towner seems to be a charming place and the coffee bar looked great although its popularity meant that we weren't able to find a table so had to eat elsewhere.

We loved this venue for our wedding reception. They were very organised, lovely food from Urban Ground and a great Sussex Open exhibition where guests could enjoy a private viewing. The kids loved the Fuse box karaoke room.

After the sea I would say it's the most beautiful thing in Eastbourne and alive with both conceptual and illustrative art. The Ravilious & Co. exhibition was so popular that it was difficult so see the first few rooms for the crowds, all ages. Beautifully curated with plenty of seating along the way and the story of these artists told in many different ways from illustrated books, magazines, fabric and ceramics. Lovely shop too.. The restaurant is very popular, clean and not overpriced.there was also a family art room where participation was encouraged and art materials were available free of charge, with some gorgeous books to peruse and friendly assistants to chat to. Top attraction don't miss it!

We went to a special exhibition (of Ravilious and Friends), costing £8 per head. Very well put together, with really meaty displays and notes. Top class. Nice shop too.

I'd rate this a great little gallery in a seaside town. the temporary exhibition was very good. Once you buy your ticket for the exhibition, you can go out and return later. This is useful on a late night opening.
There is a small café with a balcony, which serves good coffee and food. The staff and volunteers were helpful.

I wert to the Ravilious & Co. exhibition today. I thought the exhibits were fantastic and very interesting. I learned a lot and enjoyed the show immensely.

I don't know if the show was exceptionally busy, but I felt the exhibition space was a little cramped considering the number of people present. i am delighted that the gallery was busy, but it may have benefitted from timed viewings today.

I also enjoyed the other displays and spent a very worthwhile few hours at The Towner.

We often visit if only to have coffee in the Urban Ground coffee shop which serves some of the best coffee in the town. While in the gallery we often have a look at the latest exhabitions which are always changing.

The Towner is a great feather in Eastbourne's cap. I've seen some fabulous exhibitions here – and a few duff ones. But hey, it's all a matter of opinion. Light airy galleries, good coffee shop and very close to the sea front. Go.

Went to The Towner for the Ravilious and Co. exhibition. The gallery is free but this special exhibition was charged at £7 for concessions, £8 for adults. You can go in and out during the day as the exhibition is large. It was a lovely experience seeing the paintings and prints etc. in real life! There are so many beautiful paintings by contemporaries of Eric Ravilious and I especially liked the work of Thomas Hennell, Helen Binyon and Diana Low. His wife Tirzah Garwood also completed some brilliant work and I loved the prints by Enid Marx. I also saw a mention of Marion Richardson, an expert on children's art and I wondered if she was the same person whose handwriting style I taught primary school children many, many years ago!
The rest of the gallery is bright and inviting and the cafe area and views from the large windows make it an exciting place visit. The small shop is well presented with books and gifts at prices to suit most people.

We visited mainly to see the Eric Ravilious (and friends) exhibition, which was brilliant but there is more to see in this gallery. The space is light and airy, there is a nice cafeteria which overlooks the Devonshire Park tennis area, and any public facility which has Dyson Airblade hand dryers in the toilets has to be taken seriously. There are building works around the gallery at present but we parked a car easily enough nearby and bus and train access is also not difficult.

Well meaning but just not London. Think I am spoiled. Just a breif visit but my feeling was trying to do too many things.

As a first time visitor to the Towner Gallery I went here primarily for the Ravilious exhibition but also discovered a great little gallery with much wider interest. There were other interesting, contemporary, local artists on display too overing a range of styles and tastes. There's a great cafe at the top and overall it's well worth a visit. Glad I came.

I went to see the Ravillious and Friends exhibition - which is quite popular and lots to see and read. Most enjoyable and your ticket will allow you to go out for a break and then re-enter.
The whole site is undergoing renovation and re-building but does not interfere with entry. There is a cafe and a small shop and an enormous lift - industrial size!
