We have been looking forward to this and it was wonderful. So many brilliant works on show by Ravilious and his comtemporaries, watercolours, wood block prints, lino prints and such good little cards telling us so much information. We are in awe of the talent of them all. Go to see it before end of August. Well done 'Towner'.
Also lovely coffee and polenta cake in the cafe.

The Towner has been brilliantly modernised. Throughout this summer they have given over their entire main exhibition space to the work of the early 20 th century designer/ artist Eric Ravillious, and his various contemporaries and friends. This is a superbly curated exhibition, accompanied by an excellent publication.
Having only last year visited an exhibition also largely dedicated to this artist at Dulwich Picture Gallery, I had initially feared repetition; but I was completely wrong. With the sole exception of some of his early 1940s wartime paintings in submarines, the vast majority of what was displayed was completely different, and his career was covered far more thoroughly.
Another great plus was the easy availability of parking meters in the vicinity, so seldom the case for too many other urban galleries. Unequivocally recommended.

Wonderful exhibition, full of top quality pictures and information. We had come to Eastbourne specially to see the Ravilious and Co exhibition and it was well worth the journey. Additionally, the Towner is a well lit, clean space, with charming staff and a café serving a good cup of coffee. Good value.

The Towner is one of those galleries that quietly host some spectacularly good exhibitions and Ravilious & Co falls into this category.
If you are in Eastbourne before the exhibition closes in September 2017 I cannot recommend this more highly. The exhition is an absolute joy to visit and reinforces just how good Rabilious, Bowden and Nash were together with the female artists on display.
Even if this exhibition has finished The Towner often have works by Ravilious et al on display.
Having wandered round the gallery, a visit to Urban Ground is always a good way to end a visit to The Towner

Most people head for the beach but this gallery is next to the Devonshire Park where international tennis matches are played so it is easy to find and not far from the beach either. The scope of the exhibition is ambitious as it tells the fascinating story of Ravilious ( a local artist ) gained international respect with his gentle understated watercolours and amazing lithographs. He collaborated with Edward Bawden,on a mural which is on film but was sadly destroyed in the London blitz.. I did not know he became a war artist too which led to his untimely death over Icelandic waters when his plane vanished. His contemporaries and friends were all very gifted and inspired each other. I believe this exhibition is on until October so do not miss if at all possible.

I went to see the exhibition about Eric Ravilious and his friends. There were so many wonderful works of art on display and lots of information about them. There was a video of approximately 10 minutes too. The staff were incredibly warm, friendly and natural. Not aloof or pushy as in some places you visit. I had lunch in the cafe afterwards and it was delicious. I would highly recommend a visit here.

I recently visited this exhibition with my son and a friend. It was a really interesting, information exhibition about the work of the artist Eric Ravilious, his wife Tirzah Garwood and his close friends including John and Paul Nash, Eric Bawden, Helen Binyon and Peggy Angus in Sussex in the years immediately preceding the Second World War. The gallery itself is a very interesting building with helpful staff and a very good cafe.

Really enjoyed the Ravilious and Co exhibition. Spent 4 hours learning lots about him and his friends. The real insights came with seeing one of his school sketchbooks and Tirzah's amazing drawings from when she was 17. Just go!

A group of us travelled from Ditchling to this exhibition. We felt very welcome from the start, as they explained that out tickets enabled us to go in and out of the Exhibition at will.
The Exhibition itself was beautifully presented and imaginatively curated, with art from various of Eric Ravilious's friends, some of whom were famous, like Paul Nash and some of whom were unknown, to us at least.
The whole layout of the Towner is very effective and a good use of modern materials. It has a good Art Gallery shop. Although we all had a particular interest in Ravilious, we will be keen to go back again to further exhibitions.

We have so enjoyed this art gallery on a number of occasions and found the art displays have been so enjoyable.

Sadly we visited when the gallery was preparing the Eric Ravilious exhibition which we would have loved to have seen. The only exhibit on view was not at all to my taste...a deconstruction of one of his paintings. Meaningless to me I'm afraid and I am a lover of modern art. Entry is free but donations accepted. Talking to a local we were told that their grant had just been stopped and it was uncertain whether the gallery would be able to continue. That would be a shame as it is a well designed space. The cafe was good and you can sit on the balcony overlooking Eastbourne tennis courts which are undergoing massive building works.

Surprising and well curated, often with an unexpected mix of contemporary art. Always worth a visit. Expect to discover something new.

An amazing modern and purpose built display space, this gallery is able to bring modern art to the masses for free (donations welcome).
I visited to see the 'A Certain Kind of Light' exhibition, an interesting collection of works of which I loved the 'disco ball'.
Not somewhere you would visit regularly, but be sure to keep an eye out for exhibitions and visit when something takes your fancy.
Very helpful staff who didn't talk down to me when asking questions about the artists,

So, do people actually visit here for the cafe or the art? Visited on a Sunday morning but not very much art displayed, bit disappointed really considering the amount of money which must have been spent on the rennovations! Looked like most people were in the cafe rather than visiting the exhibitions, very odd. Nobody in a couple of the exhibitions to tell you what they were about and i think the few staff members in some of the galleries were maybe not allowed to speak, sorry, won't be returning or advising anyone to visit.

We had a light lunch in the second floor cafe, then spent an enjoyable hour or so looking at an amazing collection of light displays, statues and various art work. It was free to enter with donations encouraged. Well worth a visit

I visited the Towner Gallery recently and really enjoyed it. The Ravilious room was small but fascinating. There are three floors in the gallery but there is a large lift if you are unable to walk the flights of stairs. I saw the "Certain Kind of Light" exhibition which was fun, had a coffee in the cafe which is on the top floor and has good views over the town and then ventured down to the second floor to see the "Museum of Art" exhibition. To my delight, they had some Alfred Wallis paintings which I did not expect to see.
A lovely space, close to the seafront and easy to find. I will return to this gallery for sure.

We love taking groups of students from the Twin English Centre to the Towner. Armed with an illustrated worksheet, the students are encouraged to use their imagination to interact fully with the exhibitions. Particularly noteworthy were "Towards Night," "The Mseum of Art" and the Light exhibition. They all provoked a lot of discussion and really benefitted our learners. Thank you to all the staff for welcoming us!

Visited with kids (9&10yrs). Free visit. Worth visiting regularly as the Towner are always reinventing their space. Get for getting youngsters talking!, Their opinions and feelings about what they feel , hear, see and also touch at the gallery. Gone are the days where you just stand in front of a painting..... the instalments here are thought and feeling provoking!! In a safe way!
Word of advice... keep visits short .... don't expect kids to interact with each and every display. Pick a floor / special exhibition to focus on and then visit again another time.
