We always try to visit the Towner when we go to Eastbourne. As ever, there is a great exhibition at the moment, and the tea room on the top floor offers delicious refreshments and a terrace in the good weather.

The Eric Ravilious designs for ceramics was excellent as were the other displays. We also visited the Urban Ground coffee shop band enjoyed cheese paninis and plumb cake along with good coffee and hot chocolate. The coffee shop staff were very helpful and easy to deal with!

The exhibition of Ravilious and others, designing the everyday, is very, very good. Such a shame there was no catalogue to accompany it: the displays were really interesting, and the notes to accompany then a model of what good, clear, writing should be (ie, none of the pretentious twaddle to which museums all to often succumb): a gem of a thing.

The exhibitions were largely dull and uninteresting with one stunning exception (Perspective). We filled in an hour here on a very rainy Easter Sunday and almost half of that was drinking coffee and reading the newspaper in the café. However all the staff were friendly, helpful nd enthusiastic.

Everything about this place was great. There were 2 exhibits during our visit there, both excellent and very well displayed. The childrens' painting area is a treatable and the cafe is also very good. Very good and outstanding considering the free admission. Not to be missed.

We have been a couple of times since it opened and have not found it that interesting. In the school holidays they have activities of painting/drawing for the children which is good. It is free so it is worth a look.

We enjoyed our visit, loved the exhibition and the inside of the gallery - but oh dear this building looks like a white elephant lost in the middle of beautiful Victorian Eastbourne. Modern architecture is fine in its place, but this is the wrong place. Whoever gave planning permission for this monstrosity was off their head.

We have visited the Towner Gallery a number of times, its great local gallery to visit, the works on display are varied and we have seen some excellent displays and others less so.

Art is of course subjective so everyone will find something to please them at some time. The gallery itself is worth a visit and of course its a pleasure to pop some money in the box on the way out as its a great free to enter gallery.

Always something to capture the imagination. The building itself is super and the enthusiasm of the staff inspirational.

A great place to visit for the whole family. It doesn't really matter what you think of art - be it modern or classic. The Towner will open your eyes and give children a chance to try it for themselves.

During school breaks, the Towner usually puts on a great schedule of events - often for free - for children to enjoy. And during school term, there is a room for children to draw and put pen to paper - and finally the cafe at the top will allow everyone to recharge.

Definitely worth a visit - and a few more...

Always find it interesting visiting Towner, although not being an artist find some of the exhibitions strange and not what I consider art!! Lovely things for sale in shop although some over priced.

As usual visited cafe before our theatre visit. Rather disappointed with food _cookie and cake dry and stale tasting- although was in date. Previously ate there in summer time when probably quicker turn over of food.

We are not always impressed by the exhibitions put on at the Towner, but we do appreciate that peoples tastes differ and the handsome building is a great asset to Eastbourne. We sometimes go to the cafe/restaurant and our last visit was on Saturday 1 February. The staff were very helpful and had a much better attitude than the staff we encountered some months ago. We very much enjoyed our tea/latte and cakes and will visit again. The view towards the Downs is great.

very good coffee and at long last, a manager with staff who actually care about what they are doing and offer service.
The Towner should be a premier venue and has never been exploited the way other galleries in Sussex are'
See Jerwood and de la warre and learn from them

We must be missing something because we thought this was poor. The emperor's new clothes! Every room had a guide which seemed a bit over the top as there were so few exhibits. Looks like lots of cash spent on not very much.

Towner has some great exhibitions and always tries very hard to suit a wide variety of tastes. Also has lots of great children's activities which are free or very reasonable. A real asset to Eastbourne/

Last went when Lyons tearoom lithographs were displayed. I didn't know what a lithograph was before I visited display.... More knowledgable now! A credit to the town. Usually something to appeal to most people throughout the year. A coffee always go down a treat too.

This impressive building houses a gallery which often only has one or two exhibitions on at a time. Certainly worth a visit if you have a spare half hour but you will be disappointed if you expect to spend an afternoon here.

The current exhibition (until 5 Jan) by Chiharu Shiota encompasses a whole room with her customary labyrinth woven from black yarn creating arched walkways. Take a few minutes to read the thinking behind the exhibition before walking through the wooden doors.

If you want more than this, plan your visit when there are special events or talks by checking their website.

Visited whilst I was in Eastbourne visiting a friend at the time of Airbourne. Entry was free for the exhibitions I saw and the Gallery Staff were very friendly and polite. Its well worth a look if your in Eastbourne!

I didn't find this place easy to find (from the pier anyway) as there didn't seem to be any signage at all but thanks to the satnav on my mobile we made it OK. We were warmly welcomed by a lovely lady who told us what was going on (wish I could remember her name as she was a credit to the gallery) and we had a good look around. We enjoyed what we did see and would certainly return if we visited Eastbourne again.

We went to the towner to see the lyons corner house exhibition Firstly there was a chargewhere the rest of the gallery is free, we
thought there would be pictures of the different lyons shops for some nostalga instead there were paintings that used to hang in the shops so a little dissapointed

The exhibitions are changed on a regular basis. A bus will take you to right outside the gates, alternatively one can easily walk there through the park from the town.

My tips: if you are on foot or coming from the railway station, have a map to hand. There are no obvious signs for a walking route to the gallery. And secondly, entrance is free but you pay for special exhibitions; you can reduce this fee if you have an Art Fund card. It is a fairly small gallery on three floors with changing exhibitions. On my visit, there was a mix of the comfortingly familiar and the slightly shocking to wake you up. Not too big. There is a lift with its own bench seat. Pleasant tea bar with good views out of the windows. Definitely worth a visit. Friendly. Nothing intimidating about it, if you are not normally a person who visits art galleries.

Our very own miniature Tate Modern here in Eastbourne. Small enough to be "personal". Often (at specially arranged opening evenings) you'll find the artist standing around siping a glass of wine and chatting away with members of the public. Exhibitions change frequently, so go frequently. It's free and the bar does a nice red wine, so I often arrange to meet friends here rather than at the pub!
