Stayed at this hotel for three nights and had a wonderful time. We hired a car and there is free parking at the hotel. You can even drop your car outside and a member of staff will park it for you.

Food at the hotel was very good, breakfast was superb and we had a meal in the curry house, which although very expensive, was excellent.

The location is great for exploring all the island, with the shops and ferries close by.

There's an outdoor pool and jacuzzi / stream room / sauna indoors, which are all very nice.

The rooms were old fashioned, but that fits the overall style of the property. In July, the room was quite hot at night, but the hotel has some great fans which you can ask for to help.

Would definitely return if I ever visit Guernsey again!

Those of you who have been following my Red Carnation Blog will remember that last summer I left a scone crumbs trail for my parents, so they will better find their way back to the Old Government House Hotel in St Peter Port, Guernsey. Well… it seemed like my masterplan had worked, as we have found ourselves in the OGH yet again. What a treat!

Arriving and Check-In
Big heavy raindrops fell form the sky as we landed in Guernsey. Big heavy rain drops fell on my head as we ran the short distance from the aeroplane to the terminal building. Our luggage came out in a matter of minutes, still shimmering with the grow of fresh rain drops. Just like last year, my parents were on the lookout for a man holding an iPad with our family’s name on it. And yet, instead of such a man, a familiar face holding a large umbrella approached us. Could it be Mr. C (the top chap of the OGH)? - my father had asked himself. Yes it was (I, of course, had no doubt about it). Mr. C told us that because of the weather (big heavy rain drops) and our delay, there was a problem with the normal car service and so our airport transfer got upgraded and personalised. Or, as my father explained to me later, someone monitored the flight situation, someone thought things through and someone cared enough about us and made sure that our vacation will be as comfortable as possible from the get go.
At check-in, over a glass of juice (my parents were offered the bubbly sort) I started to worry. Where was the sun that I had been promised by my parents? Are my plans for lazy days by the pool eating noting but strawberries, popcorn and olives have all been dashed? Noticing that some of us are concerned, Mr. C assured us that the rain was just a hiccough and that starting the next day all shall be well again and that the sun will return to the little Channel Island - (and sure enough it did).

The Herm Suite
After the swift check-in process was over, we found our way to our room by the help of Daniella, from the front desk team, who even helped to carry my little precious Trunki. Up the lift, down a corridor, down some stairs and up some stairs (what a terrifically Hogwartsy place the OGH is), we found our magnificent lavish suite overlooking St Peter Port Harbour. What a view!!! (even better 'live' than the webcam stream found at the hotel’s website). The room, apart from being equipped with a view, also featured my cot, a bathrobe made in my size, a special soap befitting a child's delicate skin and a Guernsey Bath-time Rubber Puffin. My parents were happy to find some stuff for them, such as: A most comfy four-poster bed, lots of cupboard space, a Nespresso machine, a lavish bathroom with a free-standing bath, complete with lion's legs (will any other do?) and some nice smelling bathroom amenities. With yet another touch of OGH wizardry we discovered that our luggage has already apparated in our room before we even got there, so all which was left to do was to go downstairs (up some stairs, up a hallway and down the lift) to the celebrate our arrival with some food and drink.

The Crown Bar
Arriving downstairs we were greeted by Chris, another attentive member or the OGH team. Seeing that the hour was drawing late, we were helped to a table at the hotel's Crown Bar for a quick bite. Apart from some olives and popcorn, I also shared with my parents a yummy-delicious Guernsey Lobster Roll and a Locally (also yummy-delicious) Smoked Salmon Sandwich, all beaming with freshness (as my dad described it). All which left to do now was to get into those comfy looking beds and start afresh on the following day.

The Breakfast
The sun was out (Mr. C has delivered on his promise). I got up. It was early. A bit too early to my parents liking while on a holiday. Nonetheless, we made good use of the time and headed to breakfast. Lots of fresh berries, along side some other fresh fruits, awaited my (and other guests') arrival . Some very inviting Danish pastries, a selection of smelly cheeses, my parents are fond of, breakfast cereals, yoghurts and a good selection fresh juices were present, as well. We sat in the conservatory looking out into the garden and I got in my hands a menu, from which I could choose a hot breakfast. My parents ordered some of their favourites (my father is still taking about those Eggs Royale) while I was quite content with a fresh scrambled egg and a side of everything else my parents had order. My daily breakfast also consisted a stroll through the hotel's well tended gardens and daily check of the water pressure of the fountain (still as good as last year).

The Curry Room
We celebrated my dad’s birthday at the Curry Room restaurant. An ornate space with some wonderful things to look at and inspect. Entering this part of the hotel will transport your spirit to all manner or distant regions, whilst keeping corporeal self stationary by its tables laid with inviting nibbles. My parents were happy to find a revamped menu, which featured, along side some old favourites, like the Bengal Fish Curry and the Indian Rice Pudding new stuff like Mango Spiced Scallops and Goan Lobster Curry. I was offered a less spicy 'kids' menu', which every adult will happy with too. Nonetheless, seeing that I had had already helped my parents with some very crispy, very yummy poppadoms, by the time it was time for me to have something from the menu, the explorer's deco of the room beckoned my adventurous side and I was off to investigate what was going on anywhere but at my parents table. I did, however, allowed my parents to enjoy some quality time with a glass of some of their favourite South African wines and a quick dessert (I managed to find time in my busy exploration schedule for the Indian Flavours Inspired Ice Cream).

The Pool
From the hotel's gardens I could see a very inviting body of water with some very inviting looking sun loungers. This area is also known as the hotel's pool. Paddling pool aside, long legged beings may also enjoy the adult ‘deep end’ part of the pool. Attentive staff are alway overlooking the area should a guest need something and making sure that lounging chairs are always decked with fresh towels. At this point of our vacation my wish for popcorn and olives has been fulfilled. But the highlight was the special refreshing water there. My dad told me that what made those drinking water so special was the fact that they had been infused with orange, lemon and lime - hence their refreshing quality (have I mention how well they pair with popcorn and olives?).

The Outstanding Team
Above and beyond anything else (apart, maybe, from my scone crumbs trail) what bought us back to the OGH was its dedicated team. Team members like Jaro, who always offered his help to carry my buggy and was once, when I fell asleep in my buggy, even kind enough to go all the way to our room to make sure that it has been serviced and ready for the continuation of my midday nap. Andrew, who always offered to help me carry my all important balloons around. Nellie, who used her ’Spidey Sense’ to know what my parents are going to ask for before they could even open their months. Later I was told by my father that a ‘Spidey Sense’ doesn’t actually exists, but attentiveness, professionalism and kindness do and this is how one can foresee the wishes of one’s guests. This point has made me think about the level of service I am receiving at home. How come my parents do not have a ’Spidey Sense’ when it comes to me? How come I am asked to articulated my wishes and not have them fulfilled right away? Standards are defiantly slipping at home…

Check-Out (for now)
It was time for checkout. It was time to say goodbye. It was time for me to get impatient. It was time for my father to run after me, so I shan’t run into the street alone. It was time to get into the car and a time to forget our laptop rucksack at reception. By the time my father had noticed that whilst grabbing me he left his rucksack at reception, Andrew, who drove us to the airport, told us that someone had already noticed the rucksack and that it is currently speeding its way towards us by another member of the hotel’s team. Andrew pulled over by the curb, took the rucksack and not even 5 minutes had passed before we were back on way to the airport. Did my father forget the rucksack because we was busy scrabbling after me or did he hatch up a complicated ploy to return to the OGH next year to ‘rescue’ the rucksack? I guess we will never know, but I also guess that we will surely return here (come of think of it, I forgot to leave a new scone crumbs trail).

Just returned from a wonderful week in The Old Government House, Guernsey. I must say, this has got to be one of the best hotels I have stayed in. The staff were brilliant, the food was fabulous and the rooms very spacious, we stayed in a king room 322. Can’t recommend this hotel enough...

After such a magnificent stay here last July we simply had to return to the OGH this summer. By the time we had finished the check-in process and been handed our welcome drinks, our bags had already been unloaded from our car and whisked away to our room. Everything we had specified had been accommodated for: a fridge for my medications, the cosiest bed for our assistance dog and all the other little touches that make the OGH so special.
We had time to savour our drinks and relax with the view from our balcony before our dinner reservation in the Brasserie. The menu is eclectic with lots of fish dishes and 'catch of the day', as one would expect, my husband particularly enjoyed his fish and chips. Breakfasts in the Brasserie are a sumptuous affair with a cornucopia of delights served buffet style and hot dishes catering for every whim. We must thank Chef who was able to cater for my husband’s sweet tooth on more than one occasion! It is such a beautiful setting looking out on to the garden with the olive trees and all the window boxes and planters of red geraniums.
We were exceedingly lucky with the weather, once again. We chose to spend the majority of our time resting and recuperating for my medical reasons by the crystal clear pool under a parasol when the Guernsey sun became too warm for us. There was an endless supply of fresh towels brought to us and pool service drinks and menus available, whilst we sunned and relaxed.
My husband used the gym every day - note: old size £1 coins for the lockers, so the gym lent him a token!
As with last year, on our final day Guernsey was experiencing a record temperature heat wave, but the interior of the OGH with its air conditioning is so beautifully cool you would not have known. We were so sad to be leaving and know that we will definitely return next summer.
We would like to thank all of the staff because everyone made our stay so very special and really comfortable, but we’d like to mention the following by name: Nelly on Reception, whose smile and joy just light up the whole foyer, and Danielle too, such a lovely welcome team. Stewart-you carried all our luggage up to our room, not to forget my extremely heavy medical trunk, thank you. Alessandro in the Brasserie at breakfast, just the kindest and friendliest gentleman. Matilde and Casper in the pool area, thank you for all the offers of drinks and all the fresh towels. And of course, Jaro Opletal. Thank you for your extreme care in all areas and for looking after our every need. And last but not least, it was lovely to talk to Andrew -this is an exceptional hotel. We have really fallen in love with it and hope we will be able to return for many more years.

We stzyed at the OGH for our first visit to Guernsey. The stagf were excellent but the hotel does not meet the standard's required to merit 5*s.
The bedrooms are small and our room have faults that one does not expect from a high class hotel, eg mould and rust shower, damaged glass to the dressing table which was effectively a health and safety issue and a safe positioned on the top shelf of the wardrobe which made it inaccessible to any one under 6' tall. The curry house meal was good but the chicken and prawn dish was almost inedible withe prawns being overcooked which made them taste like rubber. Service in the restaurant was slow with only one person who was also taking room service orders.
The hotel has many stairs making it difficult for anyone with limited mobility.Over all a good 4* hotel that needs a lot more effort to warrant 5*

The OGH May have 5 stars and an excellent town location but it fails to meet the luxury hotel standard. It’s good, with air conditioned rooms but just falls short. No minibars in the room and in room coffee service is still instant coffee. Room service menu very limited and staff taking orders hardly speak English. An order of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon arrived as a smoked salmon and avocado sandwich with a small bowl of scrambled eggs on the side!
The bars lack any atmosphere. Reception staff are not very empathetic.

5* service and the most helpful and pleasing staff. We had a great stay in a most convenient location. There was nothing the staff could not do to help and arranged and looked after us like royalty. The rooms, and in fact the whole hotel was absolutely spotless. The service was 5*. Outdoor pool was again spotless, warm and a lovely retreat after a day out on the island. The spa was ok but could do with being connected to the pool. The breakfast was amazing and the evening meals were delicious but could do with a daily special and or a bit more variation. All in all a tranquil and nice experience

We have visited Guernsey many times to see our son who lives there but this was our first stay at the OGH for 3 nights. The hotel is beautiful and the staff are very friendly. We were in Room 106, which was very spacious and clean but has a small bathroom with a shower over the bath. It is on the swimming pool level which was very convenient. The pool was lovely. Problem was that shower head angle couldn't be altered and water was directed onto taps making it very unpleasant experience. We complained about this immediately but nothing was done. Also bath had a damage in it which had been badly repaired and filled, which was mouldy. I would have expected better maintenance in a hotel of this standard.

We stayed for 5 nights in June 2019 and loved the OGH. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff were all very welcoming. The receptionists were always friendly and asking if we'd had a good day. The quality of the food and the amount of choice, especially for breakfast, was exceptional. The bedrooms and the public spaces were beautifully decorated and just made it a special place to stay. I think we all need a bit of luxury and pampering in our lives at some time, and the OGH is a great place to find it.

I stayed for 4 nights from 30th June with my Wife, Aunty and Uncle who had recently celebrated his 75th birthday. Our Aunty has mobility issues so she travelled with her wheelchair although usually uses it only infrequently. Following our flight she was suffering and depended on her wheelchair during our stay. We stayed in rooms 201 and 211. Aunty and Uncle were moved to room 211 after the initial room allocated was considered unsuitable for her. This was undertaken with the minimum of fuss. My fault entirely as I had only briefly discussed wheelchair accessability at time of booking expecting Aunty to be walking far more than she actually did.
I have to say the hotel was faultless from the excellent staff to the quality of the food. Someone at the hotel has recruitment and training spot on. The staff were more than happy to help , often anticipating your request. They could not have been more kinder and helpful to our Aunty. It would be very easy to pick out individuals for praise but that would be based on dealing with them on a more frequent basis. Even members of staff we interacted with only on the odd occassion exhibited the same high standards.
From our experience I would be so bold as to say that if you do not have a perfect holiday stay, then the fault will not be down to the team at the Old Government House.

Fabulous hotel, great food, great location and courteous staff. We only stayed for a couple of days but wish it could have been longer. Will definitely return to this hotel - already planning the next trip.

We had the pleasure of spending 5 nights at this wonderful old establishment quite recently. A big thank you to Hilton & the team for the exceptional service and wonderful food. I would recommend the queen size room as the classic room is a little on the small side. The hotel is very well placed, being It is a short walk to the harbour area & the shopping area. We will be back!

Guernsey is a gem of an island. We have stayed in 8 or 9 lovely hotels
there. This year we chose the famous O.G.H.From arrival to departure the service from all staff was excellent and faultless. The public ground floor rooms are elegant and very comfortable. The disappointment was when we saw our room.Small to the point of chlostrophobia, nowhere even to store our suitcases..Next day we asked to upgrade but decided the cost too much.We were shown a room in the same catergory which we accepted. This room was more airy but had it’s own problems.Safe difficult to access, poor quality tiny shower cubicle, and shabby furnishings,But the bed was lovely. The receptionist who organised the move was also very helpful. But the rooms were not worthy of a 5 Star hotel and therefore spoiled our 5 night stay.J.P. One does not keep returning to a regular hotel unless it is something special. And 'The OGH' is that. The ambiance and attention combine well with its style and location. Yet of course one also notices nuances and changes. This time it was the less than refined service - with one notable exception - in the restaurant. One joy if the weather suites is breakfast in their lovely garden - yet the day we could was spoiled by an incompletly laid table and that I suspect we were forgotten 'out there'. Another time our cooked breakfasts were produced before we'd finished our cerials. We dined in one evening and had a long wait - apparently our starters were taken to another table. Thus my main, Duck Cottage Pie was well over heated - scaldingly so. Now in the grand scheme of things hitches happen - its human. But OGH was not like this in its 4 star days. So we are disappointed but not sufficiently not to return. We will. There's far more good, nay excellent which makes it a favourite - not least the Housekeeping. Our room, albeit compact was immaculate when we returned in the afternoon and then again after dinner it had been prepared ready for us. Fresh fruit is there and each evening a litle box of goodies. And, I nearly forgot a Carafe with fresh ground coffee. The same must be said of reception, concierge and Duty Managers. Ready to greet, help and give useful advice.

Stayed here with my wife for a weekend break. Our arrival was handled well and I’m pleased we’d booked a bigger room - the standard ones looked very snug.

The property itself is beautiful, with some great artwork but the execution of service on all too many occasions was sorely lacking.

From not being able to get through to room service to order drinks (ended up with a voicemail simply saying no one can take my call) to sitting in the garden for well over an hour without anyone asking if we wanted anything, the missed service opportunities (and in turn income for the hotel) seemed to to smack of a cliched 1970s seaside hotel.

Plates at breakfast were left far too long before being tidied away and the quality of the fruit juice deteriorated every day, too.

Given the substantial price tag and the way the hotel bills itself, I had far higher expectations when it came to service levels.

If you want 5 star luxury close to the centre of St Peterport, this is the place to stay. It's close to shopping, good restaurants and ferries to Herm and Sark. Just stay clear of their granuled scrambled egg at breakfast.

Weekend away to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

Staff are super efficient and friendly and made us feel very welcome on arrival. Room was comfortable rather than spectacular (our room did not have harbour views) and could do with some updating. That said for two nights, really nothing to complain about.

The hotel has charm, some great restaurants (we ate elsewhere but the reviews are good) and serves an amazing afternoon tea, If weather permits, have your afternoon tea on the terrace overlooking the harbour.

Amenities include a spa, gym and an outdoor pool.

Not cheap, but for a short stay its the best hotel in St Peter's Port

The OGH is a superb 5* hotel situated close to the heart of St Peter Port and a few minutes walk from the ocean. The rooms are elegant and very comfortable. The public areas are stylish and upmarket. But the real highlight was the quality, style and professionalism of the staff who were very helpful and could not be faulted in any way. They truly make the experience at the OGH memorable. We would highlight Zoe at reception who took the time to explain the various tourist attractions, suggest restaurants and activities - she made sure we made the best use of our weekend stay.

We stayed for 5 nights over Liberation day and couldn't fault either the facilities, food or service. In particular all the staff were keen to help in any way they could. The Brasserie was delightfully situated so that the moning sun shone into the room during breakfast.

The hotel is very close to the centre of St Peter Port and its seafront which is only 10 mins away (although longer on the way back!)

This was the 4th time we had stayed here and I was expecting to give an automatic 5-star review. There are a lot of good things to be said about this hotel. The friendliness and attentiveness of staff, where nothing seems to be too much trouble. The surroundings and decor of the bedroom (ok, may have been a bit beige). A superb sauna/steam-room/jacuzzi combo. The attention to detail - recognition that we were there for a 30th wedding anniversary through cakes to our room and a heart-shape on the bed made of fresh flower petals (well, my wife thought it romantic). But the difference between a good hotel and a great hotel is made by marginal differences, and we both felt that there was something ever so slightly off compared to previous visits. We think that the restaurant service and standards weren't quite what they were, but as mentioned, it is marginal. Enough for 4.9 stars if that were possible. Would we stay here again? Most probably. Before this trip it would have been automatic and unequivocal.

Fabulous.
Will come again. None of this should come as a surprise to anyone as this is the place to come. Marvellous staff, all top drawer. It's up market, and not cheap. But. Sensibly, there is a bottle of wine for those treating themselves to something they would not usually afford.
Top quality food, and plenty of it, unlike similar top quality hotels where the presentation is key, often in place of a proper dinning experience.
Incredible staff. Valet parking. It sits above the town with wonderful views. Peaceful, quiet, and charming.

This hotel is ideally located close to the sea and shopping centre. Staff are very helpful and the rooms comfortable.
We only ate breakfast in the hotel but this was excellent. The bar areas are also nice with plenty of seating and I did notice people having afternoon tea and cakes which also looked excellent.

Boutiquesque hotel, charming in parts, but the rooms are small, so there is noise from the corridor. The bathroom was modern and neat, but very compact and how a shower was fitted in way a surprise as it was the tightest shower I have ever been in measuring just 2ft by 2ft. It’s a good job I am slim!
Worst part was the incessant alarm from an unoccupied room at 6:15 on a Saturday morning which required a call to the front desk to sort out – 10 minutes later.

This is a very smart, traditional, dog-friendly hotel. When I made the booking for one plus my Norfolk Terrier (for my stopover, travelling from Jersey to Sark), I blanched at the room cost: £260.10 for one night with breakfast in April (room with balcony). However it was worth every penny as this is a really good hotel, with fantastic service. The room was stunning, in an old school way - draped curtains, monogrammed bed linen, little chocolate treat/snack. Breakfast was delicious and as it was a bright day I sat outside near the fountain - incredibly relaxing. I liked this so much that when I was on my way back from Sark, with time to spare in St Peter Port, I came here for a coffee - perfect if you are with a well-behaved dog and want a quiet break. I would definitely go back as I don't get that much time to relax - quality time out is at a premium - and so you have to grab it with both hands. The beautiful Candie Gardens (terrific views) are just across the road: handy for walking the dog. Looks like a great place to have a posh tea to celebrate a special occasion, or to come for a smart breakfast with newspapers at a weekend. Do dress up a bit (jeans are fine, but definitely "clean jeans") and come to have some peaceful time out. Great location if you are visiting St Peter Port in Guernsey.
