I think for the 5th or possibly 6th year running. A long weekend of R&R for wife and self. It is difficult to add to my report at this time last year, save that it was then in the sunshine of mid-August and now rain in late September this year prevented lazing by the pool. After visiting so often there is frankly not a lot left to do in Guernsey, but the hotel offers above all warmth of welcome treating us as old friends - always gratifying . . . The food and service remains impeccable under the command (definitely the right word) of Maitre D Ken (we wish him a well earned rest in his native Mauritius), though it would be good to see the menu changed more frequently. The bedroom we try and get each time has a sea view and lovely 7 foot bed. The guest computer is easy to operate. All in all - the perfect spot. Thank you once again OGH.

Stayed here on a week's business trip. First you have to realise (or get used to) the fact that Guernsey is small, so its buildings are too, and its hotels will have small rooms.

Rooms OK if not a little pokey. Bed comfy, strange combination of light switch settings to get alternate lights on or off. Decent TV options. Nice touch to have both still and sparkling water provided for free. Bathroom small and shower cubicle tiny. You had better not be bigger than 5-10 and 160 pounds.

Only had breakfast food, but that was excellent, especially the Eggs Benedict and the Eggs Royale (as Benedict but salmon instead of ham). But they need to go on a course to learn how to make tea and coffee; it was poor. Afternoon tea (as a meal) looked especially good, though I did not partake.

I would give the staff 11 out of 10 however. They were courteous, efficient, and prompt in all matters, solving any issue I had.

This was my third visit to the OGH and my husband's first.

There are no superlatives enough to describe just wonderful this hotel is. Everything about it is outstanding, the rooms, the food, the ambience. But what really makes it stand out is the staff and the service. They are so professional and yet friendly and welcoming also. Absolutely nothing is too much trouble.

I am already planning my fourth trip as I can only do without the OGH for so long. It has, quite simply, got under my skin!

This hotel is truly an amazing place, from the warm welcome to the final good-bye.
The food is lovely the staff are so friendly nothing is to much trouble.
I took my sister there for a belated 50th birthday present ,and we were both spoilt with the service I will defiantly go back would recommend it with the highest stars.
If you are looking for a little piece of heaven then the The Old Government Hotel is the place ,and so is Guernsey.

We came with friends for a w/end away, we stayed in the Hermes Suite, our friends had smaller rooms but they said they where very good as well, the suite was lovely with great views, we dined in the Brasserie one night and the food and staff where excellent. Breakfast was very good again the staff where great and the food good with lots of options. the Bar Staff very attentive. The Pick and Mix jars went down well as well. The whole hotel clean and tidy, Afternoon Tea was very nice also. Would highly recommend this hotel.

What can I say, stunning hotel, wonderful staff.
We planned on a three night stay but it turned into four due to the weather.
Hotel extended our stay with no problem.
Great bars and restaurants.
The out side pool was lovely and warm and very useable.
My only gripe was that the shower in our room was very small given the size of the bathroom.
Looking forward to returning in the near future.

I attended a formal dinner and both the food and service were fantastic. Everyone was served within a couple of minutes. So often at functions for a large number of people I am disappointed by the event. Not the case at the OGH they had everything spot on.

The room was very nice as well. Staff were very attentive. Harry and his team made it a very pleasant evening.

From the moment the three of us arrived (us and Denis the dog) nothing was too much trouble. We had a beautiful room with a balcony with views of the port and the Fort. There was a dog bed and bowls waiting as well as some treats for him.The amenities were excellent - a beautiful spa, a well equipped gym and an outside swimming pool (although we didn't take a dip as the weather was a bit chilly). The hotel is situated in the heart of the port so main shopping area is just down the street with shops, cafes and bistros, however you don't hear any noise from the hotel. Parking is free (Valet or drop off/ collect yourself) We ate in the main dining room for dinner and breakfast and the food was excellent (the dog was allowed to be with us) Do mention that you have the dog though as then a quiet table can be found to accommodate them being there. This is for the benefit of the other diners as the staff seemed to love the fact he was there and he was fussed over by them all . Dogs are allowed in the bar area and the reading room as well. The staff were second to none and were very helpful on the sights to see and sat down with us with a map to help us plan a trip around the Island. We will definitely be back and would recommend this hotel to anyone - with or without dogs (ours was the only one staying at the time) Thank-you once again to everyone at OGH for the most wonderful time. Cant wait to be back :) Paul, Jessica and of course Denis!

Excellent hotel. 5 star all the way.
Really good food and comfortable rooms. Very handy for shopping and eating on St Peter Port, and for several meseums and atractions. Would definitely visit again. Try the curry
.

The best hotel on the island and we have stayed at most over the years as we visit family. Well worth the money from the beautiful heated pool, spa facilities to the impeccable rooms. Harry's bar was a favourite with its great gin selection. Great breakfast. We did not try the Restuarant but the menu looked interesting South Africa fused with Indian cuisine. We will be back soon.

Make no mistake this is a superb hotel with a good history of the finest service and possibly the grandest position in St Peter Port, being the former Governors residence. From manager to staff that we met their attention to detail and understanding of guests requirements was second to none. We had a superb suite with harbour view and luxurious comforts. However, the food was, in my view, not up to the expected standard of choice expected of a luxury hotel. The menu did not vary as the days passed by and I became disappointed with the lack of variety. I mentioned this to the management and was told that mid-week, at this time of year, a lot of the guests were corporate and were dining out with clients elsewhere. Therefore the kitchen staff was minimal and the choices smaller. I pointed out that as the week progressed the restaurant was getting almost empty and perhaps efforts should be made to entice 'the corporates' back into the hotel restaurant by offering superb dishes with great choices that they couldn't refuse! My ideas were greeted with understanding and promises of future improvements. I do hope this has been rectified because every other aspect of our stay was relaxed and memorable. The waiters were great and attentive too, but the head chef, I believe, let the side down on our visit, by his lack of interest and culinary ingenuity. Top marks elsewhere though.

My Wife and I have just returned home from spending a week at the Old Government House to celebrate my 50th and our second honeymoon. The hotel is beautiful and the service impeccable on every level. We're very critical of hotels but just couldn't fault this wonderful place. Try out the cocktail bar! Being a fan of fine whiskeys and gins we were like children in a sweet shop. Dinner in the brasserie and breakfast on the terrace is also a must! We would also recommend the afternoon Tea which was delicious. A very big thank you to all the staff who looked after us so very well. This was our first visit to Guernsey which is a lovely island with plenty to do.

Great hotel, we liked the service, the rooms, the excellent breakfast, BUT unfortunatelly right next to this great place it seems yesterday (Aug 27th 2017) an open air music club just opened with a license to play club music until midnight. So, if you can stand this, this is the place for you. If you seek a quiet place to sleep before midnight, go somewhere else.

A friend and I arrived at the hotel in a taxi that was unwilling to take our euros. I frantically ran to the desk and asked if I could exchange money -- "Madame, please, it is our pleasure to take care of the taxi. No problem." This was the beginning of my love affair with OGH. After paying the taxi, Andi, a beautiful South African woman with a talent for story-telling and rescuing weary travellers, produced 2 glasses of champagne and made us promise to leave all our problems for her to solve. She got no argument from us. We had a lovely in the garden, although I have had better egg salad. The breakfast was fantastic -- gorgeous dining room and amazing buffet + hot food to order. Our only regret was that we were there less than 24 hours and didn't have time for the spa! This hotel is much more than my usual budget, but I was absolutely delighted I chose to stay here. I cherish the pampering Andi and the staff bestowed on us and will remember the great stories they shared.

Lovely hotel in a quiet but central location. Such a contrast to business hotels , character charm and every room different. Staff are friendly and attentive. Outdoor pool small but heated and sheltered. Spa is a nice plus, spotlessly clean. However the breakfasts are out of this world, easily the best I have had anywhere.

Fully reiterate the positive reviews previously written so will not repeat those. Just a few little niggles during our stay that's all. We were a little disappointed with our room, it was very small but classed as a queen room. My husband and I could not be on the move at the same time! Similarly with the bathroom, it was tiny especially the shower cubicle. We found half used bottles of shampoo and conditioner which had not been replaced from the previous guest. Our tea bags were not replenished either hence we did not have any one morning for our cup of tea. Other than this we had a great stay.

We stayed here for our 2 night 'minimoon.' Very nice quality hotel with good facilities and particularly excellent helpful staff in all areas. We had upgraded to a sea view room which in reality didn't feel good value but then we didn't see a non-sea view room. The room and bathroom were a little on the small side but that didn't really detract from our stay.

My husband and I stayed here this week to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary, we have never been to Guernsey before we fell in love with the island. The hotel was perfect in every way - you can tell the staff love working there as everyone was so friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble. The room was lovely, very quiet and a beautiful view out over the pool and out to the harbour. It was clean, comfortable and you could pre-request items like hair straighteners. Every evening the room was made ready for bedtime, and a little treat was left on the bed - delicious cookies, biscuits and fudge - everything was scrumptious. On our Anniversary they even left us a card with a lovely message and two slices of cake with a chocolate written Happy Anniversary message on the plate - it's the little things like this that make a hotel stand out above the rest. Breakfast was included and there was plenty of choice from cereals, to cooked breakfast and even yummy pancakes. The restaurant staff get to know you and are always friendly and chatty - I have honestly never stayed anywhere before where the staff were all so lovely - it made such a difference. We ate dinner in the restaurant on two occasions and both times the food was amazing, I'm quite fussy but they were more than happy to accommodate any dietary requirements. We also had afternoon tea one day which was delicious and it's the first time we've had afternoon tea and not been able to finish it all - it was that good, with so many tasty cakes. We couldn't get a taxi on a couple of occasions due to there being none available - but the hotel management offered to take us, again a lovely touch and made us feel like they really cared about our experience on the island. There is nothing to fault about this hotel, if you are visiting Guernsey it's a must! The location is ideal, close to the shops and the harbour and definitely visit Herm - a gorgeous island with beautiful beaches. You won't be disappointed if you stay at this amazing hotel.

Really enjoyed a two night stay here, visiting from neighbouring Sark for a medical appointment. I could find nothing to fault at all, which (for me) is highly unusual. There are steps at the front entrance, but a (wheelchair friendly) lift is available. Having a slight disability, and booking by telephone (at short notice) I was allocated a King room which, as well as the usual bathroom facilities had a really good walk in shower. The room (and I suspect all the rooms) have the quietest air conditioning system I have ever encountered. The weather was fairly hot and I was able to control the in-room temperature easily. The bed was probably the most comfortable that I have slept in anywhere - and the blanket put (at my prior request) in the duvet cover actually stayed in place on the bed throughout both nights. The greatest thing about the OGH is the staff - all were friendly and efficient, responding to requests promptly and without fuss. As the hotel would put it, the OGH is my new "home from home" in Guernsey. It is quite expensive to stay here, but every penny you spend is well worth it. Breakfasts are first rate - served "properly" with just juices, cereals etc on a buffet table. Table service is gladly provided even for those items for those (like me!) who ask! I shall review the Brasserie separately, where I ate several memorable meals. I am returning very soon! Thank you to all the staff, who took a genuine delight in looking after me.

Billed as the 'best' on the island - and it is probably the 'poshest' by a long way - and reflected in the price.
The welcome (with fizz) was very good and they whisked our car and bags off while telling us about facilities - very nicely done!
The room was very comfortable, though the view at the back of the property was not what we had hoped for (it is set on a hill in the centre of town).
The bar area outside the restaurant was VERY noisy with group after group of load 'local' guests partying. Management really should have intervened but I guess they don't want to upset regular dinner guests.

Very comfortable bedroom, and well-appointed public rooms with excellent facilities - gym and outdoor heated pool - and very pleasant staff. It is most conveniently positioned in the town with easy walking to most sites.

We stayed for a fortnight and although it's expensive you really do get what you pay for. Nothing was too much trouble for the hotel or its very competent team. Eating in the hotel was a real pleasure and apart from busy times the service was excellent.
Is there a downside- well it's an old building and sound insulation isn't great and there was one evening when a function could be heard in some of the bedrooms. That said we were advised in advance and the event was well managed and did not go on too late.
All in all - it's a real hotel and a pleasure to stay at.

A lovely old fashioned 5 star hotel, bit of a problem parking outside to unload as it is a narrow street. However they do park the car for you. Nice welcome. Room very small and dark.Food and staff very good. Nice restaurants.
I did use the spa, felt very embarrassed walking through the hotel with gown on as there was a wedding on.

A hotel delivers only on staff performance. It is the only thing that makes one stand out from place x up the road from where i the traveller wants to be and the OGH staff are perfect.
Each and every staff member made an effort not appear so. They clearly work extremely hard and are so nice to talk to.
I am very lucky to have visited hotels in 3 continents in 20 years of travelling and for staff i rate this the best experience i have had.
The food was delicious and served hot to all guests.
They took care of my every need before i even thought of it half the time.
For any function, wedding or just a stay on the island i heartly recommend.

This hotel is very unassuming from the outside but this all changes once inside. There are lots of the original features remaining and the decor is very tasteful.

Excellent staff at reception who helped us with arranging cycle hire and taxis. Andi gave us a guided tour of the hotel. She was very knowledgeable considering that Guernsey is not her home. She's also very passionate and proud of the Red Carnation group.

Our suite was well appointed with a gorgeous bay window overlooking the harbour. Very comfortable bed with crisp bed linen. The bathroom was large with lots of towels! The room was perfect but perhaps the addition of a mini fridge might be considered by management.

There is an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers. Had we known that the pool was heated to a comfortable 28c we would have packed our bathers! Oh well, we'll remember them next time.

Breakfast was served in a spacious airy room with the option of also eating al fresco. Good selection on the buffet with lots of fresh fruit too. There is also an extensive menu with the usual
hot breakfast selection but with the addition of healthier options i.e. avocado and poached egg on toast, butternut squash "pancakes", to name a couple. The staff were very efficient and we didn't have to wait too long for hot drinks and food.

The hotel boasts a gin bar which met with our approval.

Many thanks to the OGH who made our weekend break one to remember.
