The Secret Garden is worth a visit whenever they are open! The staff are friendly, the service is excellent and the food is all freshly cooked by excellent chefs. It is bliss to sit over a cup of coffee with a wicked cake and while away an hour. The outdoor seating in the garden is sheltered and aromatic. One of the best kept secrets in Sudbury (or it was). Have just returned home from a warm visit there - any excuse.

Popped in for lunch after trying to find something better than normal tea shop fare in Sudbury and we definitely found it here, a menu full of French based snack lunches or specials that were main dishes, all well presented and tasty using very good products and home made. Great tea and coffee with a short French wine list, they have evening meals Fridays and Saturdays but we understand you must book!

Living in France most of the year, we were delighted to find The Secret Garden.
What a joy to find such wonderful food & exceptional wines, together with home- made sour doughbread.
The small fixed price menu, together with daily 'specials' is what most restaurants have in France, ensuring freshly cooked ingredients .
The food was simply delicious , perfectly cooked & the cheeses were exceptional & all servedAt the correct consistency.
This restaurant will never disappoint.

Shared an extremely tasty lunch here with my girlfriend. The menu consists of a selection of staples with the addition of a small selection of seasonal specials, which I assume changes regularly. Both meals were highly flavored and in good portion sizes. The "two courses" option from the specials board brings better value and offers a selection of very appealing, freshly made desserts. The staff were very attentive and friendly, but perhaps the decor and furnishings were a little too basic. Will definitely return.

We come here a few times a year . This time we came with friends and enjoyed the Christmas menu. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented and was good value. The proprietor is a charming French man who makes you very welcome. Try it for something different.

I had just come to the conclusion that restaurants in Sudbury were rather underwhelming, and then i stopped for a coffee at teh secret garden in Friars Street, Fabulous really friendly, great food lovely log fire and quick and efficient service no wonder it gets busy at peak times.
Well done to the secret garden a great find, i know where i will be heading next time I am in Sudbury.

Went here back in late August for a lunch with a friend. We had the fish cakes with samphire. Very tasty but felt a little rushed, as we had said no to a pudding felt that in that case they wanted us to leave ASAP.
Will give it another go though as food was very tasty.

We had the specials of the day menu and between us tried each of the options on the three courses. Each showed evidence of a real care for ingredients and flair in putting them together. The apple and pumpkin pie (made to the proprietor's mother's recipe) stood out, but no dishes disappointed. There was a pleasant and attentive atmosphere and it was astonishingly good value for money. It made us wish we lived in Sudbury. Highly recommended.

Been here several times and have loved every meal, all homemade and using fresh local produce, they grow their own herbs, tomatoes etc in the courtyard garden, which is beautiful in the summer months. The staff are always friendly and service is always prompt. I would recommend this for a yummy lunch, the only thing I would say is that it can be pricey for some dishes, but perfect for a treat and cannot fault the food at all!

You will not be disappointed if you visit. Limited menu, but all delicious. Usually pop in for lunch after having a wander around Sudbury and I always feel I have been transported back to France. Lovely ambiance, staff friendly and helpful.
The garden is a lovely area to sit out when the sun is shining.

The food at the Secret Garden is consistently superb. We tend to go for dinner (only open for dinner Friday and Saturday) where there is a fixed price menu with only a few choices for each course plus some specials for the day. However, the limited choice here is amply compensated for by the quality of the cuisine and the freshness of the ingredients. The wine list is exclusively French with some excellent value wines. Service is friendly and attentive. The best restaurant in Sudbury by a country mile!

We went for a cosy family time on a damp September afternoon. The ambience was relaxing. The food was nice but the portions seemed small and overpriced. I should imagine the garden would be pleasant in summer.

My wife and I went to the Secret Garden for a quick lunch after being recommend by a local shop owner, it ending up being a long lunch because of the setting and the ambience, we were lucky with the weather so we were able to sit outside, the food was wonderful with a French twist and cooked to perfection.
We will be back and recommend to anyone Kaz & Mart

We were guests at a wedding party and The Secret Garden served up a delicious 4-course meal for about 40 people. Everything about the venue/food/service was brilliant. Staff very attentive. Even served up gluten free food especially for me (Coeliac). Sat in the garden afterwards with a drink. Absolutely lovely.

Please make your way to the Secret Garden - you could easily pass it by without realising what you have missed.
This is a really friendly little restaurant with wonderful staff and a super Chef who has in the past helped me with a Sourdough starter, and how to make successful Croissants - he is French, and of course the menu reflects this.
You can buy fresh Sourdough bread baked on the premises - often best to ring first. The brunch and light lunches are fresh and vibrant and reflect seasonal produce which is locally sourced.
There is a good wine choice and the cakes are not to be missed.
The back room has an open fire, which is lit in the cold weather, so a really lovely place to have breakfast or brunch.
They do open in the evenings but only on certain days - booking highly recommended.
This is one you really should not miss - I love visiting and often make a special trip just for the restaurant.
Enjoy …….

Great place for a tasty lunch with a strong French influence. My mother comes here regularly as her weekly treat. Beautiful back garden/yard for the summer, and it's all excellent value. One of the only non-chain restaurants in Sudbury, intimate surroundings also suit a romantic dinner of an evening.

Having often popped in for coffee and cake or light lunch and been impressed, finally got round to going for dinner and kicking myself that it took us so long. Delicious food, superb and efficient but unobtrusive service and and amazing ambience - The Secret Garden by night is a secret that just needs to be shared. At £25 for 3 courses and coffee the value is unquestionable and the quality untouchable. We will definitely be back. Soon.

Focused formulas find favour. This cafe/ tea room converts to a Bistro in the evenings courtesy of its French owners. bare pine tables, simple wooden chairs with cushions or a bench by the window. Intimate room, £25.00 fixed price three course menu with three dishes per course, simply veg, fish, meat; veg, fish, meat: cheese + 2 fruit deserts. Good £14.00 bottle house wine.Swift friendly service from the family.Tasty food with eclectic mix of french/colonial flavours. High lights, Sea trout terrine, my mullet and fennel with lots of orange was a surprising delight, raspberry souffle fantastic (& still on in summer menu). Sweet wines worth it with the puds. both Co^teaux du Layon & Muscat de Mireval. Coffee and refill included tried Monsoon good not to sharp. Bill for four £100.00 for food plus only £40.00 for drink (driver had one glass of wine only) bargain! can't see a reason not to go again. Interesting, pleasurable, satisfying. Booking advised. Recommended.

As a party of 11 for lunch we were given our own room to dine in. We all opted for the blackboard dishes of the day which were £14 for two courses. There were just two choices for both starters and mains. There was also a menu with light bites and sandwiches on. We had bread and water brought to us before the meal. There were a selection of reasonable priced wines. You could take your own but would be charged £6.50 corkage to do so. We had a chicken stir fry which was very tasty but could have done with a carbohydrate to go with it or some more bread. Very pleasant staff and good service.

Lovely place to have a light lunch when visiting the market town of Sudbury. It is pricier than some of its neighbours but the food is good and made with fresh ingredients. Coffee was delicious. Thank you!

This is my second meal here and it was even better than I was expecting...and the bar was already high!
I lunched here some time ago and was very impressed with the food, the staff and the ambience.Everything about the evening was delightful. We had a three course dinner and this included filter coffee with top ups. The food was perfectly cooked and creatively presented. We had a range choices between us so I was able to admire the dishes I hadn't chosen!
The service was very attentive without being intrusive and all the staff looked happy! The menu is not very extensive but that didn't matter at all! Looking forward to visit number three.

This gem of a place serves teas and light lunches I understand during the week, but on Friday and Saturday evenings it turns itself into a French restaurant. The charming staff are privileged to be able to serve imaginative dishes using the freshest ingredients from a menu which changes several times per year and which is always supported by daily 'specials'. We have eaten there on numerous occasions and had fantastic value and great taste. Nearly always full when we are there so I imagine need to book early (we always do) but well worth a detour if in the area at the right time.
