I've stayed at this hotel a number of times and have only recently felt compelled to write a review. I first stayed here in 2010, regularly, for about 6 months. My next visit was this week. Here is my review - and comparisons to 3 years ago.
When I arrived, I was greeted by a nice warm smile and a friendly member of staff. I was checked in and made my way to the room. I knew what to expect so I didn't pay much attention to the room at this point. I dumped my bags and went to the bar area. It's nice to see that they are now offering free wifi - this worked strongly in the bar area and pretty well in the room I was in.
I ate in the spacious bar area. The food quality is good and reasonably priced. I thought it was slightly cheaper than 3 years ago so maybe they've changed the menu and pricing slightly. Drinks, I think, are overpriced. £3.40 for a pint of coke...
It would be nice to see a larger screen, maybe a projector, in the bar area. The area is large with lots of seating, but a very small screen (32''? 37''?). On the night of the Manchester Utd/City derby, there were a lot of people in the bar. It just didn't work for me...
Breakfast is ok. Standard set up really. I found the bread used for the toast to be slightly stale - maybe is was sitting out too long in the morning, maybe it was the days' before bread that was being re-used...? The coffee is not nice, slightly burnt. The tea is ok.
Some of staff are friendlier than others and make more of an effort to smile and say hello. I found this mainly to be on the breakfast shift where there is less 'effort' made.
The room is standard. A relatively small size if I'm honest. There is a TV in the room, which I was surprised had Sky Sports on it, but was equally surprised to see it was an old school deep TV, not a flat screen, and the picture was fuzzy on most, if not all channels.
The 'Double' room was 2 singles pushed together, and because of this, the side tables and light switches were situated further than an arms length out of the covers. You had to get out of the bed, or really stretch over if you were to with them off. A small thing for some, but when you're tired, it makes the issue seem bigger than it is.
The sleep quality was ok. The beds were firm and there was a medium thickness duvet on the bed. When I'm trying to get to sleep, I like it to be as quiet as possible. That wasn't going to be the case in this particular room. The radiator in the room needs hot water running through it, it's not an electric one you find in most hotels, and the noise that is generated from it in a quiet room - you'd think someone was having a shower next to you. I thought it was loud. This is an issue I had 3 years ago and I was moved rooms which helped so it's not every room....
The bathroom was poor. The shower had been moved and the holes just had filler in them - it looked really messy. The corners of the bath/shower had dirt or mould on it. I didn't want to get close enough to check it out if I'm honest!
I've attached pictures of the bathroom as this is the area i was most disappointed in.
The gym facilities are ok. Some good weights, 2 benches, cardio machines, a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. I've used all of these facilities and they're ok. It's good to see you don't need to remember your £1 for the locker anymore in case they've ran out of tokens. There is a keypad system where you put a 4 digit pin in and that's your locker code. Nice touch.
Check out was simple but I was surprised to not be asked if I'd had a nice stay. At least then I could've told the lady 'no'.
All in all, a mediocre stay. This is advertised at a 4* hotel. Now, I don't profess to be a jet-setter, but I've stayed in a lot of hotels for business and this just isn't as good as other 4* hotels. Nor, in my eyes, is it a 4* - 3* at best. For a hotel with similar amenities, try the Mecure Last Drop Hotel. Good food and excellent gym facilities. Both better than here.
If it wasn't for the location for work, the free wifi and the fact there are gym facilities here, I would always choose the Premier Inn over the road. The staff are friendlier, the sizes of the rooms are bigger, the TVs are flat screen and better picture quality, the beds are comfier, the bathrooms are cleaner, and you get more for your money food-wise.
I hope this helps whoever reads it.
