It was either a night in the very stuffy dining room of the grand surrounded by overly attentive penguins or a night enjoying good wine @ easy to accept prices alongside a selection of small plates. You don't need to tapas, we did.

As steaks were consumed by real men on tables next to us, we sat and ate delicate plates of fish alongside a fine portion of fries.

It's the atmosphere of Cru that makes it special. Intimate, warm and created with care. They care and you'll feel this throughout your lunch, dinner, wine tasting or as we were valentines.

Really cannot fault this place, within 3 minutes of being there, we were laughing and joking with staff like we were all mates!
Service was second to none, food came out promptly and was absolutely unreal!!
Really funky venue, didn’t even know it was there until recently! Would recommend 100x!
Like a stylish Gourmet London Bar/Restaurant in the middle of Eastbourne!

A hidden gem in the heart of Eastbourne. A small cosy restaurant tucked away in the basement of building. Set down a small flight of stairs, the entrance then opens into the restaurant area. The menu is small but you understand why with the quality of food served. Extensive wine menu (as it was a popular wine bar previously). Steaks are a total winner, plenty of sizes and choices. Tender, full of flavour but cost is a little higher than most places. Staff are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable with the wine choice and menu. Certainly worth a visit if your visiting Eastbourne or just a local. Bookings highly recommended.

Very well accomplished chef: food was cooked to perfection, every bit was delicious. The portion size is very small, half of what you'd usually expect. The place is very popular so reservation is necessary if you don't like to sit uncomfortably. Too many smokers in the open sitting deck... But I know they cannot do anything about it if one is to smoke their head off!

Never been until today and definitely coming back. A little hidden gem of a place to be honest
Down the stairs off the main road into what would have been the ‘lower ground floor’ back in the days when it would have been an Edwardian or Georgian house. The bar is dead ahead and seating either to the right in the booth or round the corner into the restaurant area
Had a really friendly welcome and the pick of tables as we were the first in
A really decent selection of wines (made me happy straight away) although this is more restricted if you buy by the glass
The food selection is limited but don’t let that put you off. There’s pretty much something for everyone on the lunch time menu
So we had mixed olives and bread with oil to start. I have to say the olives are incredible. They’re marinated on site and apparently are just standard wholesale bought olives other than that.
Steak and burger for main. The steak was awesome. Cooked perfectly. I had the Brighton blue cheese sauce with it which was really nice although slightly cold when it arrived as it had started to set. But I never let that put me off and it tasted lovely. The burger looked amazing. The ‘Cru-mas’ burger with Brie, cranberry and pigs in blankets in it! One of those burgers you need a flip-top head to eat!
Couldn’t handle dessert....
The place is immaculately clean and the decor is lovely (see pics).
So why not 5-stars? Basically it’s a bit top-end pricey. The steak was £21; the burger £4.50. Overall, lunch for two with a couple of drinks came in at £65. So it’s a bit more at the treat end of the scale rather than being a regular haunt. But well worth it overall
