Visited Cru for the first time today for lunch for my husbands birthday. Booked after finding them on trip advisor and was not disappointed! Lovely decor. Great wine and craft beer. The menu was full of exciting dishes which made it hard to pick! The food we had was delicious. The service was great. They said happy birthday to my husband as soon as we walked in (I had mentioned it on the online booking form) and put a candle in his dessert. The table next to us even joined in singing happy birthday with the waitress. We live in Hastings but will be back. A hidden gem!

A great find via Tripadvisor as we are not locals. Food was really delicious and wine excellent. We got wine advice from the sommelier but it is not a pretentious place and we were happy to express our ignorance! Service was friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place (also had a good expresso martini to finish!).

Do your homework and book in advance for this tiny basement wine bar/restaurant!
The food is imaginative, tasty and nicely presented. The wine list is truly extensive with variety and prices to suit all pockets, and a manager who has encyclopedic knowledge of his stockBut it is the food service that really excels. Charming, knowledgeable but never intrusive. A very pleasant way to spend an evening.

Always walked past it not thinking about what may be inside.... visited last night, amazing buzz in both the bar and restaurant. Perfect service and excellent food. But pricy but I think on balance, worth it. So, our new regular in think!

Cru is brilliant. The food is absolutely delicious and the staff really know their wines. There is a great selection and if you're not sure what you want the staff are on hand to advise. The service is friendly and efficient. I've visited for a dinner a deux with my husband and with girlfriends and it suits both! I love it! Definitely 5 stars.

A beautifully set Resturant in the centre of Eastbourne that offers a wide range of hand picked recipes with the most amazing wines to match. There is so much class a style in this place! Perfect for impressing on a date or dining out with friends. Would highly recommend

I am confused as to review this restaurant Yes the food was good with a variety of starters different from the norm . I really enjoyed the dumplings. My wife enjoyed her main of swordfish and I had a soft delicious steak (there was a steak at £62!!!) . However our feeling was that for the prices charged which aren't cheap perhaps the service and ambience was a little too relaxed. More wine bar (as it also is) . Perhaps I'm getting old!

Decent indeed. Possibly an understatement. I'm not too keen to let on about Cru in case it becomes too popular.
The good:
Fantastic food, from start to finish. Great selection of English wines INCLUDING East and West Sussex - yayyy.
Not too pricey - we all guessed the bill would be far higher than it was. Attentive, polite, friendly service.
Nice outside area for drinks and snacks. Town centre location.
The not-quite-so-good:
A bit noisy. Really could do with some soft furnishings to dampen the sound. Wheelchair inaccessible - tight steps to the lower-ground floor restaurant.
Very, erm, cosy toilets.
Other:Doesn't seem to quite know whether it's a restaurant or wine bar.
All that aside, the truth is it's simply the best food I've had in Eastbourne. Definitely going back.
Food recommendation: all of it.
Wine recommendation: any of the English whites. Waiter recommendation: all of them.
Easy.

I booked Cru for an evening out with a friend. The restaurant is located in a basement just off the main shopping area in Eastbourne. There was a nice friendly feel to the place. Decor is modern and we were sat at one of the higher table and chairs around the edge of the room. The menu has a selection of small plates which you can share or have as a starter and a selection of main course options with a special of the day. Food coming out of the kitchen looked really good so we were optimistic that we were going to have a good meal.
We opted for the gyoza and scallop with morcilla, butterbeans, mango and pink peppercorn starters to share. The food was flavoursome and really well balanced. There was a hake special with arancini including fennel and spinach, which are all flavours I really enjoy and they did not disappoint. My fish was just a little over, but that did not detract from the overall execution of the food which was beautifully presented.
There is a great selection of wines and craft beer, depending on your preference. We opted for Gruner Veltliner, followed by some Prosecco, which were light and dry, and complimented the food well.
The staff are friendly and helpful and there is a lively atmosphere. I have already recommended the restaurant to other family and friends and wish I'd found it a bit earlier, as I will definitely be returning.
The only small issue was the limited space on the tables, and when the restaurant is busy it can be quite noisy and sound reverberates, but this is not surprising given the basement setting. It would also be good to have a hook under the taller tables to hang handbag on. I kept having to get off my seat to get bag off floor with limited space. That said these are tiny niggles and overall the place has a great feel and lovely food and wine.

if you're looking for good food in eastbourne there are not too many independent places to pick.
normally I would go with friends and family to the grand hotel. however after tonight if you're looking for great food with a amazing atmosphere this is the place to be.
unlike other locations in eastbourne Cru takes the classics and turns them into fantastic creations.
I can't wait to re visit and spend more time here !

Great restuarant with good service. The manager was passonate about the food and wine that was being served and had a good knowledge of his wine list.
One minor suggestion: consider using sushi rice for the sushi stack starter and taste to check it is cooked through before use.
None the less, this resurant is highly recommended.

Really bustling restaurant, amazing staff who were friendly and efficient. Fantastic selection of wines, we enjoyed a good English wine from the Plumpton Estate. The food was lovely too, stuffed courgette flowers were a winner as was the Persian Chicken and Swordfish. Highly recommend this place.

Excellent food choice from menu ( although we have since been told that it only changes monthly ! ) Ample wine list if you just want to drink in the ' bar ' area or outside . Staff very knowledgeable when discussing the wines available . Evening could not be faulted .

Visited on a Friday evening and the place was already quite busy. The food was amazing as well as the service. The 2 males in the party had the Tomahawk steak which they said was amongst the best Steak they have ever eaten. I had the Enchiladas which again was absolutely delicious. Not cheap but the overall experience makes it a must. Anyone in Eastbourne you are missing out if you have not been here!

We went a bout 1 month ago on a Saturday night and it was a special occasion as a week prior to getting married.A party of 4 of us and all I can say is from the minute we arrived the waitress were very good and attentive, we managed to sit outside for a nice glass of beer/bubbly and then proceeded to be left to decide on our choices both food and wine - the couple we went with had been to CRU before for a meal and so had already advised of the dietary requirements so again this gets a big thumbs up - overall one of the best meals I have had in a long time and certainly the best in Eastbourne

Pleasant decor, good food, friendly & efficient service and an excellent wine selection. Apart from getting our starter (bread) 3 minutes before our main course I couldn't find fault with the restaurant.

Our first visit to Cru on a Friday night. We were pleasantly surprised by the menu choices which contained several interesting options. We chose quail & fig boudin and corgette flower stuffed with ricotta cheese as starters both were excellent. For main we both had Persian chicken which was good.
For us the great food was let down by the poor acoustics in the restaurant. Being a fairly small basement with lots of hard surfaces the sound bounces around and noise levels are very high.
So of you want to woo your true love, the Cru in Eastbourne may not be the best place to go (they won't hear a word you say).
We paid £80 for 2 starters, 2 mains and a bottle of wine (one of the cheaper ones on offer) and a tip.

First visit to Cru, recommended by our friends who frequent the restaurant. Cannot fault the experience at all.
Warm, engaging welcome and top quality service from start to finish. Sat outside in the pleasant front garden and enjoyed several bottles of Plumpton wine. Starters of terrine, squid, croquettes and goats cheese were faultless.
Roast dinner consisting of sirloin of beef was out of this world, far better than the Grand. Have booked to return the following weekend with friends. A new favourite!
