This is a little gem of a museum charting the presence of the time when there was a lifeboat station here and the key characters who attended the rescues. The volunteers who man the museum are very pleasant andwilling to hve a chat about the then station or anything else about Eastbourne.

I do like visiting RNLI places as there are tales of courage and hardship from local volunteers that are truly outstanding and humbling. My grandfather left some money in his will to his local station.
There is an interesting history behind this one which is housed in the boathouse built from public donations collected by the Daily Telegraph to commemorate the life of actor William Terriss who was assassinated outside the Adelphi Theatre (London) in 1897.
The first lifeboat in Eastbourne was given by local eccentric John ‘Mad Jack’ Fuller in 1822.
In 1937 this boathouse became the first RNLI museum in the country. It is interesting to walk around. Just near the Wish Tower and in a small space but lots of interesting material to read. Well worth a visit!

Museum and shop situated in the former lifeboat station, at the foot of the Wish Tower slope. Informative and well presented museum with artefacts and a great shop with quality gifts and practical items. Well situated in an area with lots to see and do. Some parking directly outside, plenty more in the road. All on one level.

As previous reviews, a small building, but what a lot of stuff inside! Don’t just look, take the time to read the displays and speak to the staff, it’s such a good way to spend an hour, some of the stories are simply amazing. Who knew Eastbourne had a link with James Bond! The staff are very friendly and helpful. Then perhaps a look around the gift shop, where there really is something for every budget.

Always go into a RNLI shop or museum. As a charity staffed by volunteers who risk their lives to save others, shops and museums like this are vital to support this amazing service. Nice selection of gifts and novelties here and photos and displays of the town from years ago.
