A well kept establishment, if you can get over the pebble-dash exterior, which is evidently a good choice in respect of wet salt winds whipping across the channel.
Friendly enough, clean enough, more than good enough for receptions, business meetings and short or long stays.
The trump cards are really the views, location and user-friendly borderline grandeur. Gardens are lovely too...Competent all-round if nothing to set the heart soaring, or the pulse racing.

Birthday Tea in the Orangery. Pleasant and attentive waiting staff. Most peculiar set up though, having to walk through a restaurant full of diners to reach the party.

It's a bit old fashioned but that's its charm. Not for the younger clientele, more for the over fifties.

My visitors to Eastbourne asked for proper afternoon tea at a truly traditional hotel, and of course I took them to the Hydro. I'd been there in 1970 from school (!) with my parents for lunch, and again half a dozen years ago (when the food in the Crystal restaurant was great - modern and flavourful). How gorgeous to sit overlooking the sea and eat scones and hot buttered crumpets. The hotel beautifully combines sumptuous pristine decor with the sort of old-fashioned service that fills older guests with nostalgia and bathes younger ones in a warm vintage feeling. It was great to see the tea-room full of visitors on a damp winter Friday afternoon - multi-tier cake-stands on many of the tables yummmm. A sign of a good establishment is the management actively about the place monitoring quality and guest welfare, and we spotted the Lounge Manager circulating unobtrusively.
What a gem.

We have just arrived home from a lovely stay at the Hydro Hotel, Eastbourne.

I have been very poorly throughout my pregnancy and housebound for 5 months so my partner wanted to treat me to a night away before our little one arrives.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were looked after. The hotel is comfortable, the staff are very professional and extremely friendly and the room that we stayed in was delightful.

I was very impressed with the variety of condiments (tea, coffee hot choc) etc available in the room, The shower products were great quality and left my skin feeling silky (most hotel products dry my skin and hair out) We had plenty of space that we actually chose to order room service and the food was promptly delivered with a big happy smile.

I had the vegetarian option (goats cheese and caramelised onion tart) and it was absolutely delicious. Having had a limited pallet whilst being pregnant I was not sure how I would get on but it was so delicious that I could have eaten two! The portion size was great and everything tasted fresh and flavoursome. We had a lovely couple of hours in the bar and although there was a large party going on, you didn't notice it at all. It was well staffed and well managed. (In fact we were chair dancing to some of the Christmas tracks!)

We slept wonderfully in what felt like plumped new bedding and had a lovely hot shower in the morning before breakfast. At breakfast we were greeted by helpful staff who could not do enough for us. They were efficient, the food was super tasty and we left the hotel very, very happy customers indeed.

Thank you to everyone at the Hydro- the Manager Jonathan and all of the staff for making my one night out this year- superb! We will be back!

From the moment we arrived at reception to the time we left, we felt so welcome. All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. It is a sign of a special working environment (in particular in the catering/hotel business) that so many of the staff have been with the hotel for a significant number of years. Mix that with some new ideas, and you will be more than pleased with your stay. Yes, many of the residents are seniors but the hotel caters well for all. The food is very good and plentiful, cooked breakfast (other options available) is prepared to order (not buffet style) and plenty of choice. We have also stayed at the Hydro for New Year on several occasions, with friends, and had a great time. All rooms are nice and comfortable and sea view rooms are really nice. We only live 45 minutes from the Hydro but do stay there for a special break, we recommend others to do so as well.

My friend and i arrived without a reservation but were soon shown one of the two tables available in a full and busy lunchtime overlooking the fact that many people were having early Christmas Meals with families and friends. We were served promptly and efficiently with a delightful meal cooked to perfection and nicely presented at a reasonable price

I have stayed at the Hydro before and never been disappointed. It's quite dated in some ways but they are good ways - probably because of the mostly elderly guests. Staff are superb always willing to help and patient with what maybe sometimes tricky requirements! I always ask for a sea view room and am never disappointed. The rooms are well decorated with good facilities, comfy beds and good bathrooms (although care needs to be taken if you have mobility issues so ask ahead).
Good food - breakfasts excellent, Crystal restaurant more upmarket (maybe a bit pricey) but I sampled a cream tea this time with a friend and it was one of the best we'd both had! (even better than The Grand next door!)
Gardens with views as far as Beachy Head are lovely.

Not terribly accessible, however they have tried, the lift goes to the floors and then you need to take a chairlift to the middle floors- ok if you can transfer, no good if you need to hoist.

We had use of the Wedgewood room.
The starters were excellent, served well, with very courteous staff. The mains were reasonably- the vegetarian option was dry- the potatoes had no butter and the whole plate could have done with a Jus.
Puds were enormous- 4 profiteroles + ice cream..... just to name one.

I can only comment on the restaurant but we had a lovely family Sunday lunch here - £22 per person for a three course meal. The staff were very helpful and the food was lovely. The food is traditionally British and whilst it will not satisfy those who favour cordon bleu it is uncomplicated and satisfying.

Another lovely stay in The Hydro. Traditional values prevail in this comfortable hotel. For an old large hotel it has a very cosy and homely feel about it.
Beautiful decor, attentive and friendly staff, luxurious and clean throughout.
Would definitely stay again and recommend.

This is a really good hotel. From the check-in with friendly helpful staff, porters to assist with luggage, and arrival in a fresh-decorated room with lovely large bathroom you know it will be an enjoyable experience.
There are plenty of lounges offering comfortable seating in which to enjoy coffee with friends or maybe just read in peace. The Conservatory is a delight : fantastic uninterrupted view out over the sea, and a lovely garden make afternoon tea that bit more special.
Dinner in the Crystal Room offered plenty of choice ; the food looked gorgeous on arrival and tasted wonderful.
To stay here is to feel warm and welcome. All the staff are so helpful, it would spoil you for anywhere else.
I would love to come here again. It was an absolute joy.

I have stayed at this wonderful Hotel many times but only just joined trip advisor so it had to be done! I love everything about this place, the location is beautiful and peaceful away from the rush of town, yet town is a wonderful sea walk away. The way it is nestled and sheltered into the surrounding countryside gives you unparalleled views from all rooms. The restaurant is great and the menu extensive - I particularly enjoy their fish preparation. How they achieve this level and quality and value I'm not sure and of course the staff are so accommodating. Truely excellent.

We are so very glad that we chose the Hydro Hotel to celebrate the 90th birthday of my husband. The whole experience was amazing. We had reception drinks in the Library and went on to lunch in the Orangery. Everything was first class. The menu choice was very varied and the food was delicious. The staff were very attentive, especially George , who was looking after us. He was a true STAR and did everything possible to make our event a success. Can't fault anything. Will certainly be returning for other family celebrations in the future. Beryl Plummer

First visit to this hotel which I chose due to good reviews and the fact it also had car parking which many other hotels in Eastbourne seemed to lack. Made booking via phone as this was a treat before Xmas and wanted to ensure we had a decent room as have encountered problems with other hotels in the past when booking online. Very helpful receptionist and we booked a seaview room for 3 nights with a 10% discount deal for advance payment. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent. The staff are courteous and friendly, nothing is too much trouble or any query too trivial. The hotel does not suffer from that awful generalised automatic type of service speak that seems to be everywhere these days which is not genuine.
Our room was of excellent comfort standard with good views over the sea and downs. All meals taken including breakfast, a bar meal in the conservatory and dinner in the restaurant were delicious with a good range of choice.
We enjoyed our stay so much we extended it by another night and will definitely be returning to the Hydro again in the future.
