We liked the excellent food, cleanliness, and atmosphere at this hotel which was our second visit and would stay nowhere else in the Eastbourne area. The car park can get full if the hotel is busy but is far enough out of town to have plenty of on-street parking around it. The service at breakfast time was a little chaotic; we were asked by several waiters on more than one occasion if we had ordered. A useful tip for management, picked up from stays elsewhere, is for the waiter to take away the menu after the order has been taken. Everyone knows then without asking. Don't let that put you off though.

We thought last year's stay was great but this was even better. Loved room 208 a lovely outlook to the sea, a real treat. Friendly and attentive staff. All areas clean with lots of space to sit and chat or just read and relax with a cuppa or glass of vino.
We particularly noticed the gardens, very well kept and cared for, so nice to see.
Excellent good quality food. We are very much looking forward to returning in September - can't wait!

I don't want to say what a great day we had at the Hydro. I don't want to say how helpful and friendly the staff are. I don't want to tell how delightful the setting is. I don't want to comment that my lunch was delicious! This is going to be my secret and I won't have to share it with anyone else!! Well done, everyone at the Hydro, we were very impressed!

Once again my husband and I accompanied my elderly father and brother for the first night of their stay at The Hydro. They cannot rate the service highly enough - staff are so attentive, which is important to elderly people. The hotel's food is excellent and there are many lounge areas as well as a huge garden to sit in. It is a delightfully old-fashioned hotel and not for those who like modern boutique style. My only criticism is that we arrived on a very hot afternoon to a sunny room with all the windows closed! Keep your curtains closed and windows slightly open at all times there!

Over the years we have often visited the Hydro. We have recently enjoyed a four day stay, our Suite room 110 was kept spotless by the cleaning Ladies.
Excellent service within the Dining room along with fine dining staff very attentive.
Gardens and swimming pool are kept to a high standard, very relaxed area`s for afternoon tea.May be listed as 3 star but could easily attain 4

Ideal for a relaxing break. Well located with amazing views and lovely swimming pool in well maintained gardens. Lots of places to sit both inside and outside. Nice freshly cooked breakfast with good choice. Lovely scones, jam and cream on the terrace. Looking forward to going back. Quintessentially nice.

Classy, classic hotel. Good old fashioned values, excellent customer service. We stayed here for two nights, midweek. Staff were all friendly, helpful and polite. All areas of the hotel were clean. After leaving our window open we had 3-4 flies in the room, we asked at reception for some fly spray, but they said they would get rid of them, and they did. When we returned to the room, we were fly-free :). Our 3rd floor room was spacious and tastefully decorated. (Note, my elderly parents also stayed in the hotel and also had a lovely room, but would suggest next time they book, they request a separate shower rather than a shower over the bath) Breakfast was tasty, we were served quickly and without fuss. Lovely to have found a hotel in Eastbourne that has a garden where you can sit and relax (or have a game of pitch and put or croquet). Will definitely be returning to this gem of a hotel.

Great hotel. Lovely grounds. Outdoor swimming pool was the clincher. Well kept gardens to walk around. Has it's own car park and away from the town centre so you don't have to feed the car parking meters everyday but within a half hour pleasant walk to all amenities which includes Eastbourne promenard and the start of the downs. I think it's good value for money. I will definately return and the weather was good too. Staff work hard. Check out the Pilot pub in the other direction if you fancy a change for a meal and a drink with freinds.

Just returned from a weeks holiday at The Hydro hotel feeling rested, relaxed and well fed.

The bedroom (222) was recently refurbished and is very spacious with high ceilings and had dual aspect windows with great views over the garden and sea. It was kept spotlessly clean during our stay.

Staff throughout were helpful, polite, discrete and friendly.

The food was first class and is beautifully presented in a traditional chandelier hung dining room. Simpler grilled meals are available in a conservatory area.

Great facilities including a heated outdoor pool, putting green, croquet lawn and spacious garden facing the sea but nicely secluded.

I cannot understand why it is only rated 3 star - but perhaps that's a bonus once you have found it.

There is a private car park - but don't arrive at lunch time when many locals arrive for the excellent lunches.

If you want hi-tech & modern this isn't for you - but if you want a relaxing holiday - this is the best around.

Located on a higher level part of Eastbourne with lovely spacious public areas and well decorated rooms
Really good resturant and feeling
More I think for the older resident with comfy lounge chairs and a piano
Outside is a clean swimming pool and terrace
A large lawn and croquet pitch
I felt very relaxed here and will come back again
It's a very nice 4 star hotel

The location couldn't be better. Quiet with a lovely lawned garden at the front of the hotel, a swimming pool and superb sea views. We have been visiting this hotel for 20 years and have built up friendships with a number of people who regularly visit, that we formed a Croquet Club amongst ourselves and meet up every August organising our own tournament. We do not play the traditional game but a game that originates from the hotel long ago - source unknown and lost in the mists of time.We have a fun week culminating in a Croquet Dinner organised with the help of the management when the winners are presented with a trophy. In fact some of the staff joined in this year and a good time was had by all. Can't wait to do it all again next year!!

My mother, daughter and I spent a night here on Sunday 7th August. We felt thoroughly spoilt! We had a 3 course meal which was truly delicious. The breakfast too was fantastic. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Thoroughly recommend!

We both love this hotel, and have brought our family here for many years. The Crystal Restaurant is elegant and the food always excellent with a varied choice of menu or alternatively light meals are served in the Conservatory. It's also nice to return to a hotel where the staff are not only friendly and helpful but familiar.

But the crowning glory of the Hydro is its expansive lawn overlooking the sea. What could be more relaxing than to play croquet and to be served refreshments actually in the garden. Superb service and always with a smile. Lounges where you can read, a conservatory for light meals - the afternoon teas are legendary. Definitely a hotel which will always remain part of our lives.

Where to start !! We would like to give a HUGE thank you to the general manager and his team. We stayed at the Hydro on the 30th July with a sea view. We have been regulars at The Grand but have swapped our allegiance to the Hydro. The quintessential old charm of this hotel has made it our No:1 spot when visiting Eastbourne. This was our 2nd visit and are looking forward to booking again & again & again !! Lord & Lady Carrington

Great hotel at the quiet end of town. We stayed in a suite and it had beautiful views in both the lounge area and bedroom overlooking the gardens and out to sea. Room was spotlessly clean and in very good order. Of all the hotels we have stayed at in Eastbourne, this has to be the best. We will definitely stay again.

I've been coming here for about 5 years and still love it. I am always completely satisfied with the service, the staff are lovely and very helpful, particularly with older people. They were especially kind after my bereavement when I came back for the first time without my husband, particularly Hannah.
The croquet is always fun with a great sea view while you play.

This is an excellent hotel in the nicest area of the town and situated high above the surroundings. There are fine views over both Eastbourne itself and out into the English Channel. It's close enough to walk up to the cliffs of Beachy Head if you have the energy and the beach directly below the hotel. The conservatory has particularly lovely views and even on chillier days is a very pleasant place to enjoy lunch or just a cup of coffee.

Croquet and an outdoor heated swimming pool give the opportunity to be outside without having to necessarily travel far. Relaxing on the outdoor terrace is particularly enjoyable with the views over the sea.

The hotel dates from 1895 and is full of character. all of the furniture is very comfortable but there are plans to update whilst retaining the charming ambience. Bedrooms are spacious, comfortable and afford all main necessities. These can be reached by two lifts or by stairs. Staff in the hotel are friendly and most helpful which can be fully appreciated in the large dining room where dietary requirements are dealt with meticulously. The wide choice of menu is complemented with the quality of the food.

Evening events and interesting talks as well as a cinema for occasional viewing are a periodic feature of the hotel. Being near to Brighton and Eastbourne itself allow a wide range of other entertainment possibilities. The hotel borders on England's newest National parks (with all the pleasures that can be derived) with an excellent visitor centre for Beachy Head itself.

Lovely hotel, beautiful room with a seperate sitting area. The beds were excellent and there are a lot of extras (paper in the morning if you like). But best of all was the view, it was magnificent (room with sea-view). The staff was really kind en helpful when I had questions.

Room booked as a last minute treat, did not want to travel for 3 hours and return home same day!.
Receptionist was friendly, gave us good directions to our room, however did not like small metal lift to take us to our floor, was like a coffin!
Room was clean, good facilities, very large shower.
Decided to book dinner, staff were extremely friendly and helpful, particularly as my husband did not have semi formal dinner attire, but speaking with Robert, we were advised that a smart shirt with tailored shorts would be okay. Food was fantastic and very reasonably priced.
Room comfortable, however seagulls woke us up at 5.30 as it was hottest day of year and all our windows remained open!

The place has amazing views and a lovely garden. It is old and a bit tired. A lot of elderly people who probably feel more comfortable than we did. Ok breakfast but nothing special. We did appreciate being served at the table. Clean room but an elevator with more dust than I'd ever seen. It worked but we will not come back. Close to the beach promenade.
