Many of my friends are South Indian Tamil and Kerala cuisine is similar so I feel I know good South Indian food.

The marsala dosi was tasty and the lamb biryani was delicious in a nice banana leaf wrap.

The chilli paneer was disappointing as paneer should be coated in corn flour and fried until golden then added to the chilli paneer sauce. This improves the texture and taste of the paneer.

If it wasn't for the paneer I would have given 4 stars out of 5.

Admittedly the four of us had a takeaway, and I'm sure (judging by the amazing images posted on Facebook) a visit to the restaurant would have enhanced the experience, but we where all underwhelmed by our food.
We had been so looking forward to sampling their offering, but in reality, the dishes where bland and lacking the *pop* of fresh herbs, spices, etc. Instead the dishes seemed stew like, and lacking any garnish. This would be expected from a run of the mill takeaway, but not from a high-end restaurant which is considerably more expensive than average.
Although I have never been to Kerala, I have spent time in Goa, the neighbouring province, and have been to keralan restaurants and I'm sorry to say that this meal didn't compare favourably.Perhaps I'm being harsh having had only one meal, but all four of us felt the same.

The staff are very efficient and welcoming. The level of service was fantastic and the food was very good! A different take on Indian food to what we were used to but we are looking forward to return again!

Excellent Indian food, pleasantly surprised to see real authentic cuisine in Eastbourne. The food is fresh and the spices are subtle. No overuse of oil. This is authentic Keralan cooking.

I chanced upon Malayalam on this site.
Having lived in Eastbourne for 22 years, I thought I knew the best Indian restaurants. It opened just a few months ago.
Due to Covid restrictions I ordered a delivery so cannot comment on the interior.I was guided through the menu by “Neha” and ordered a number of dishes.
All were superb. The food is fresh and the spices are subtle.
No overuse of oil. This is authentic Keralan cooking.
They even plan to serve breakfast “String Hoppers” once they reopen for seated customers.Malayalam has pushed “Raipur” off the top spot.

Authentic, homely and tasty Kerala cuisine from South India. We were lucky to experience their dine-in lunch time special Thali which is great value. Excellent service. Have taken away/had deliveries from them from the day they opened many times and have never been disappointed. Modestly priced considering the fabulous taste, portion size and quality. I have sampled the fare of many Indian restaurants in town and this is by far a cut above. If you are tired of the desiccated coconut, cream, sugar or excessive heat in every other dish that seems to pass for Indian fare and are looking for what proper fare from Kerala actually tastes like then this is definitely the place. Kudos!!

Never been to Kerala but the quality of the dishes at the Malayalam have made me add it to my must visit list. We had spicy prawn and chilli paneer for starters - both spicy and strongly flavoured. Then green chicken curry with a tasty paratha and fish in banana leaf - both terrific. The vermicelli dessert was sweet and creamy, and made a perfect end to the meal. Friendly, helpful staff. Really pleased to have discovered this original and authentic cuisine.

Excellent Indian food, pleasantly surprised to see real authentic cuisine in Eastbourne. This is not your usual Korma establishment, this is far far better.

No wonder the Malayalam is rated No.1 restaurant in Eastbourne. The food is beyond delicious, the service is impeccable. I had a seafood curry, my friend had lamb biryani; for a starter we shared Keralan prawns. All were excellent. Slightly (well, very) limited wine list - one each of red, white and rose - but no problems with the Chilean sauvignon we went for. Altogether outstanding.

My hubby and I went to the Lalayalam last Friday evening and had a spectacular meal there. I had the Masala Dosa as a starter which was a delight and a surprise. Ken had the Clay Pot Style King Fish Curry and I had the Malayali Erachi Curry.
We can't recommend them highly enough and the staff were attentive and made us feel extremely welcome. We can't wait to visit you again

MALAYALAM serves absolutely amazing food that is worth traveling from Brighton and Hastings and surrounding areas to. The food is absolutely sensational and the staff really welcoming and friendly. If you find yourself in Eastbourne this is a must. Go!! Can't wait for them to open one in London.

Have been happily impressed by a visit to Malayalam restaurant for their introductory or taster lunch menu. Since the cuisine of Kerala has been a mystery to me, the offer of a taster menu - available in a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian version - was just perfect. All the dishes - three curries plus rice - were distinct in their ingredients and tastes. Several were quite spicey, although a potato and vegetable dish was less so. A chiken curry was the sole meat dish in our non-vegetarian option; it was well-spiced and combined well with the rice that accompanied each tray of dishes. There was also a dosa, a large, rice-based flat bread, which could be treated like a roti. Overall this was a very satisfying introduction to Keralan cuisine, and a bargain at just £7.95.

Really amazing Indian food- and I live in London where there's tonnes of options!

Everything tasted super fresh, I had a fish curry and the sauce was really rich and filling.

The prices are really reasonable for what you get. This place is great!
