Nice, free, but you can make a contribution. Needs more signs to show the way round.

My granddaughter (10) and I visited yesterday but a lot of the exhibits were over her head this time. Cafe also was closed. The giant lift, made for huge works of Art, is always an experience. We'll be back when there's something appropriate for her to see!

I visited this gallery in Eastbourne for the first time recently, for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to see the exterior of the gallery that has been transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour by German artist Lothar Götz. And secondly, I wanted to see the gallery’s display of paintings of Eric Ravilious. The Towner Gallery houses one of the largest collection of the artist’s works; that’s understandable at the artist was raised and educated in Eastbourne.

The colourful geometric artwork which covers the exterior of the building is fabulous. It’s called ‘Dance Diagonal’; the diagonal lines of colour dance all over the exterior. It’s bright, aesthetically pleasing, and contemporary, transforming an otherwise drab and lifeless structure into a gigantic piece of it. It certainly added a blast of colour into an otherwise very grey day in Eastbourne. Götz is a German artist well-known for his colourful artwork on walls, floors and interior spaces, and I was delighted to see this masterpiece. Even if you don’t have time to visit any of the exhibitions in this noteworthy regional gallery, make sure you pass by the exterior to take in the wonderful splashes of colour.

The gallery has a cross-section of works by 20th and 21st century British artists. Apart from Eric Ravilious, most were unknown to me, so I only saw the gallery containing his works. I enjoyed what I saw, though it was the exterior that really made my visit to the gallery worthwhile.

The gallery is located about a 15 minute walk from the Eastbourne rail station, and about a 20 minute walk from the Eastbourne Pier. It’s open Tuesday to Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, from 10:00 t0 17:00. The exterior work is on show until May 2024.
