This was our first visit to Guernsey and we were visiting a close friend of ours who has just moved to the area. Knowing my obsession with five star hotels she recommended we stay at Old Government House - well this really was my kind of hotel in every way.

The hotel is very "old world" fabric covered walls, exceptionally comfortable lounges, bars, sitting rooms and restaurants. Open log burning fires in the reception areas (we visited in November) plenty of staff who were all extremely attentive and friendly. We were greeted at reception and our room allocated. We were escorted to our room by the bellboy who showed us around the hotel and our room.

I booked a sea view king bed room with balcony and was given room 111. The room was stacked with "comfort". Fabric covered walls, huge bed which was extremely comfortable and in this hotel they have got the pillows right (huge and very comfortable), premium quality signature linen and on the bed were two swans made out of towels. You may find this tacky but I love those little touches, to me it says that somebody cares what you think of the hotel's attention to detail. Flat screen TV which was small for the size of room and a limited number of channels but we don't spend time watching TV in hotels - just an observation. Tea and coffee (very good "real"coffee!) on a tray with lovely china cups, kettle and cafetiere with a note to order "real" milk if preferred. A huge comfortable sofa which turned into an extra bed too. There was a chest of drawers, desk and small table. The balcony was small but big enough for a round table and chairs. The bathroom had a large walk in shower, toilet, bathtub, single basin, heated towel rail and loads of large fluffy towells. Quality toiletries (Loccitane), the bathroom is small but everything is smart. The room has air conditioning but as we always love fresh air, we had the balcony doors open. We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the room.

The hotel has a lovely restaurant, breakfast is a cold buffet and hot à la carte everything is served fresh by excellent friendly staff. The bar has an open log fire as does the sitting rooms where they serve afternoon tea - Lovely!!

There is an outside small pool which was closed on this visit in the winter, a fully equipped gym and large communal spa area consisting of steam rooms, sauna and two hot tubs.

All the staff here are wonderful, they all wear a carnation behind their name badge (the name and logo of the hotel group) clearly everybody enjoys working here and are proud of the hotel and certainly add to the tranquil efficient comfortable welcoming atmosphere.

I thoroughly recommend this only 5 star hotel in Guernsey.

The rooms are a bit small, everything else is top drawer luxury, service is very attentive and personal. It is old world England at its best.
Not ideal for children
Breakfast was always excellent as was the cream tea.

Very central AND car parking. But very rambling to find rooms. Some double rooms not too big. We complained and were given a larger one. Breakfast very good. Stay there again-it is a yes or no. Not the ambience I expected.

This hotel has commanding views over St Peter Port and over to Herm and Sark, but only some of the bedrooms share that view. It is an old building which has been well maintained and is tastefully furnished. It has a warm and welcoming feeling like good hotels should in the autumn. It is a rambling place with a rabbit-warren of stairs and corridors but its public rooms are spacious and impressive. There is a small gym with sauna and Jacuzzi but no swimming pool. The bedroom was large and well furnished and equipped, as was he bathroom, and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. We went out to dinner to a favourite restaurant but when we returned late there was a welcome in the bar and seats around the log fire as we enjoyed a nightcap. Breakfast was stunningly good as regards choice, quality and service. - this is the standard of breakfast that all hotels should aspire to!

Every aspect of this hotel is superb. We stayed in a classic room and even though the room was very small it did not detract from our stay.
Linens and towels are luxurious. Even the in room slippers were in a class of their own!!

The hotel is super quiet as all the walls of the hotel and bedrooms are covered in sound insulating fabric.

The staff were great and so attentive without being obtrusive. Breakfasts were superb served by delightful staff.

There are several cosy areas and I think my favourite was by the bar looking out on to the gardens and sea.

A lovely hotel with so much to commend it. Expensive yes but well worth it.

Definately a 5 star experience.

From start to finish we had the best service from friendly, efficient and caring staff, nothing a problem, excellent service, excellent quality of food and beverage, except for not having any of the two Tawny Ports on there drinks list.

The only minor issue we had was the first room (Number 132) was noisy, you can hear the constant noise from an extract fan. But on mentioning to the staff we were immediately offered an alternative room, slept like a baby :-) Just a suggestion, but secondary glazing is a quick remedy to the noise.

In summary, absolutely brilliant stay and looking forward to returning in the New Year.

From the moment we arrived by ferry and met by Dale, we felt thoroughly spoilt and nothing was too much trouble. Loved The Curry Room, the breakfast was perfect, our champagne picnic on Herm was the best ever and cannot wait to repeat it. Surprise birthday cake was a lovely touch.
We loved our room. We just loved the whole three nights. The location was perfect.
We have never stayed in hotel where all the staff had such big smiles all the time. We cannot wait to go back again.
A huge thank you to all at The Old Government House Hotel for making every penny spent feel worth it.
Don't think about it, just book a stay now.

Other reviewers have said it all. Excellent personal service throughout our week long stay with all the comforts you would expect from a 5 star hotel. Ate every night in the hotel either in the main restaurant or the small intimate Indian restaurant and the food was delicious. Only slight disappointment was the quite limited menu choice of the Indian dishes available on the menu as we would have liked to have tried more. Booked a room overlooking the harbour and this was on the first floor, which did mean the view was slightly affected by the extended roof of the building below but that didn't detract from the beautiful sunrise and sunset. The staff cannot be praised highly enough.

Had the most lovely nights sleep in the most comfy bed ever. The hotel is just gorgeous. Clean, cosy, classy, friendly and it felt like the staff genuinely wanted you to enjoy your stay. They catered for everything and proactively thought ahead for every eventuality. A 2minute walk from the pier and the shops. Absolutely loved it

a 5-star hotel but without all the aloofness of traditional business- class hotels. We were there on a private visit but, despite the presence of various business conferences, we felt very welcomed with personal service and attention to detail. Recommended.

If you are looking to stay in a hotel where nothing is too much trouble for its staff, this hotel is the one for you. From the silent air conditioning in the luxurious bedroom to the sheltered pool area , you'll enjoy every moment of being looked after.
The hotel is perfectly situated five minutes from the ferry and buses nearby.Nice touches were the birthday cake delivered to our room just after our arrival and the hand made biscuits on departure. The hotel is part of the red carnation chain and we shall certainly look to stay at another of their hotels in the future.

Great staff very helpful and accommodating. The whole 3 night experience was let down completely on the last morning breakfast, the previous 2 breakfasts were 5 star plus, eggs Benedicte to die for, last one the "chefs" had 3 attempts at the Benedicte before I gave up in disgust. Not sure why they thought the plate it was served on should be scalding hot and the hollandaise sauce "cooked" on top of the eggs like a pancake with the eggs being hard, thought maybe the name "sauce" may have given it away. If this had been other than a 5* hotel charging best part of £200 per night b&b I may have understood their complete lack of culinary skills.
Be careful if they have a conference or large party on in the evening as the restaurant service deteriorates dramatically, as we found out one evening, again at £150 a couple for dinner that isn't really acceptable. That said the previous evening the dinner service was 5* +.
Poor room size and that with an upgrade to. Queen room. Double bed made with 2 single mattresses not the most comfortable.
Was it worth over £800 for 3 nights stay? Emphatically NO.

We booked an Expedia special offer that included flights from Southampton plus 2 nights and 3 days at OGH. Went October 1st to 3rd. Our first visit to Guernsey and we had no particular expectations and just went to enjoy ourselves. The hotel was lovely, very clean, friendly helpful staff and excellent breakfasts. Our room (209) was very comfortable and beautifully decorated with a very nice bathroom. The public rooms were gracious and it was a pleasure to sit in the various rooms and on the terrace to enjoy the ambiance. Great central location and altogether a very positive experience. Highlight of our trip was walking around Herm in lovely sunny weather.

The title is taken directly from the hotel mantra on our room access card. We can assure you that this is what you can expect from your stay at this wonderful hotel. We were met at the airport by a warm and welcoming ‘Guernseyman’ and driven through the beautiful countryside by the private hire car arranged by the hotel. On arrival we were welcomed by name and upgraded, without request to sea view rooms. What a blissful start to our two short nights in this wonderful hotel. The hotel employees work as a team and made us feel so welcome, as if we spent two days every week with them. The effortless ambiance created by the staff are exemplary and could be down to excellent training, a faultless recruitment department or perhaps it is the personalities of the warm and quietly efficient lovely people who have chosen to work in this beautiful hotel. I don’t know, but I can assure you it works. ‘Generous hospitality and passionate service’ is what we had the pleasure of enjoying during our short stay. We will certainly return.

We carefully chose our room via the website hoping for something special, for our first mummy and daddy only break away without children for quite some time. We opted for a seaview king room. We felt badly let down by its 'generous' size and that of the accompanying bathroom. It was almost impossible to use the toilet without first moving the toilet roll holder, and it all felt rather small and squashed in. Not what I expect when paying GBP275 per night.

We ate one night at La Nautica in St Peter Port - great fish restaurant and fabulous puddings. And another night we ate in the Curry Club. We had great and attentive service but the food was a let down. The lamb curry was tough and chewy and really didn't taste of much.

The people working in the hotel are all friendly and greeted us every time we saw one of them. We were pretty self sufficient in terms of concierge services as we were visiting relatives on the island, but the staff were happy to help with umbrellas when there was a downpour etc.

Breakfast was delicious and we were able to have an lovely lunch outside in the October sun.

We'd probably go back as we have relatives living on Guernsey and it is one of the best hotels on the island. However I'd check first on the size of room in context of the price being paid.

We have just returned from our anniversary weekend at the OGH. It was a 5 star experience from start to finish. We booked the Tennefest weekend break and it was amazing. We were picked up from the airport, enjoyed a delicious three course meal, with wine on our first evening.
The breakfast was outstanding, superb choice and extremely tasty.
It was our wedding anniversary and the hotel surprised us with a bottle of bubbly, chocolate dipped strawberries and chocolates. What really stands out in this hotel is the staff, nothing is to much trouble and the service is the best we have ever had on our travels.
We have no hesitation in highly recommending this hotel, you will not be disappointed.

We were delighted by the welcome received at this hotel. The staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. As we arrived fairly early in the morning, the car was parked by the valet service (something we were most grateful for) our bags stored and we were given a tour of the hotel as it was our first visit. We were telephoned later in the day when the room was ready for occupation.
We ate in the Brasserie one evening and were delighted with both the meal and the service. There was a wonderful choice of fresh fruit to accompany breakfast but on a couple of occasions the cooked breakfast did not quite meet my expectations. One day it was not very hot and on another occasion there was a heap of streaky bacon instead of the back bacon as described on the menu. When this was pointed out, the same food was returned to me on a fresh plate, needless to say it was not eaten. I have been assured since, that this matter has been taken seriously and efforts will be taken to ensure the highest standards are maintained.
The bathroom was good with a fog free mirror which was most welcome. The toiletries, towels and robes and slippers were all of excellent quality.
It is a lovely hotel which I would have no hesitation in choosing for another stay in this beautiful island.

Stayed 4 nights in a harbour view with balcony which was lovely. Very roomy but couldn't get over the amount of furniture in the room! Bathroom a bit on the small size but all the amenities required were there.

Staff very helpful at all times. The wi-fi is so slow, so don't rely on it, this has been reviewed before but looks like nothing has been done about it. Some of the extras ordered before our arrival just did not materialise so why bother asking or at least explain why it did not happen.

To be picked up on arrival and returned to the airport would have been a nice touch but this is only included in certain packages. Something like this is standard with other 5 star hotels we have stayed in. After a very long journey a welcome drink would have been appreciated but again looks like you have to book a certain package to get a drink on arrival, very strange.

Breakfast very good with a vast choice to keep you going all day. We ate twice in the hotel in the evening, the Curry Club where there was only us which was disappointing. The food was very bland but our waitress Andra was wonderful. The Brasserie again, lacked atmosphere but at least we did try it. Too corporate for our liking.

Excellent gym and we both had a Swedish massage in the couples room which was superb, the best we have had in a long time and highly recommended.

Thought the OGH might be on par with the Oberoi hotels but sadly not. A few minor niggles as no place is 100% and definitely the only hotel to stay in whilst in Guernsey.

A bit too British. Staff is friendly and courteous. Great location on top of hill providing a great view of the port. My room oversees Castle Cornet. Walking distance to shopping street and esplanade. Wonderful. Just lovely hotel.

Absolutely fantastic hotel with service second to none. We'd not heard of the Red Carnation group of hotels before but now look forward to staying as guests at other hotels in the group and will most definitely be returning to the OGH next year. It was the attention to detail that made our stay so special. Being asked for our choice of extras including our preferred choice of pillows and even hair straighteners prior to our visit made life easier as the requested extras were already in our room upon arrival. There are so many staff we'd like to thank but the names that we remember are Keith the barman from Dublin, Paul the pianist, Ken the chef and the Night Duty Manager. We were a little concerned about having to rely on Valet Parking but not for long as we never had to wait more than 5 minutes for our car to be brought to us. We normally have a rule of not dining in an evening in the hotel that we are sleeping in but we couldn't resist and certainly weren't disappointed! The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the towels are much fluffier than any we have at home! I did mention the purpose of our visit was to treat my husband for his birthday so he was thrilled when a delicious tray of tempting home made sweet treats arrived in our room complete with a birthday card - nice touch!!

I have attended many events at the OGH, from business conferences and weddings to dinner for two, drinks in the Crown Club or tea and cake in the lounge. The service of the staff is always faultless. They fully deserve their five star status. More recently I had a hen party pamper package with a full afternoon tea, use of the beautiful outdoor swimming pool (you would never believe you were in the centre of town) and a wonderful relaxing time in the spa. Again, all the staff were polite, helpful, and friendly. I have now booked the Regency Room for our next business event and am really looking forward to enjoying the evening at this top quality venue.

We chose this hotel for a break to Guernsey because it offered the comfort and ambiance that we look for when we travel. It did not disappoint and although arriving too early for our room to be ready, we took a tour of the hotel and left our bags and explored the town. Our room was ready on our return after lunch. We had booked into the Sark Suite which was lovely and spacious - two bathrooms, separate lounge, large bedroom and plenty of storage space for our clothes. Thick fluffy towels and beautifully embroidered sheets were spotless. We had two balconies and it was lovely to sit in the sunshine looking out over the harbour to Herm and Sark. The breakfasts were excellent with plenty of variety (the biggest and juiciest blackberries I have ever eaten) and the hot breakfasts cooked to perfection. We had a lovely dinner there on the first evening. The staff were immaculately dressed, very courteous and always helpful. They gave the impression they enjoyed working at OGH and were proud to be part of its heritage. The hotel is a little like a rabbit warren and there are lots of little nooks and crannies you can tuck yourself away to read etc. We used the services of the concierge to book a trip to Sark and several taxis. It is very rare that we go away and don't have one or two niggles about something wrong with either the staff or the hotel but on this occasion I can honestly say OGH was perfection. Just wish we could have stayed a little longer. But there is always the next time!!
