Lichfield Cathedral

Visitors to Lichfield must take time to walk around Cathedral Close and view the magnificent cathedral with the three spires. Only Truro Cathedral has a similar structure. 'The Ladies of the Vale' as they are known stand proud above the City overlooking Minster Pool to the South and Stowe Pool. Beacon Park is close by along with the Memorial Gardens. In Cathedral Close you visibly see the old City and recognise how the remainder of the City has developed beyond it. It is the seat of the Bishop of Lichfield and along with Dam Street with its snug coffee shops you are able to walk back in time to feel the warmth of this conservation area.

As someone who lives near Lichfield, I have paid many visits to the cathedral. I go in for some peace and quiet reflection. I am not a particularly religious person but I find that these visits do give me a boost, from the amazing structure itself to the memorials to various people and Staffordshire military units, the small side rooms and perhaps best af all, St Chad's Chapel to be found up some stairs in one of the side walls. There isn't a compulsory charge but a suggested donation to help with the considerable costs involved in the upkeep of this wonderful cathedral. Do visit, you will not regret it.

I have lived in Lichfield for over 25 years, so know the Cathedral well. It is certainly the highlight of any visit to Lichfield. There is a new exhibition of the Staffordshire Hoard, which is well worth a visit on its own.

I live in Lichfield and am still in awe every time that I see our beautiful cathedral. It is elegant and inspiring and is one of only three cathedrals in Britain to have 3 spires. It is easy to find as it dominates the city. The surrounding area is also beautiful; with Minster pool, Darwin House,Samuel Johnson House and Beacon park to name just a few. The whole of the city is steeped in history with lots of genuine Tudor buildings ( AND A FEW MOCK TUDOR- SEE IF YOU CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE). There are good and varied restaurants and bars to accommodate every taste. A very biased opinion but the truth.Come and see for yourself.

A beautiful 3 spired Cathedral in lovely surroundings. Only a short walk from the town centre via a very old street the Cathedral is well worth a visit. Damaged during the English Civil War and with a fascinating history the Cathedral dominates the city. The recently discovered Saxon Angel and the medieval documents held by the Cathedral show the depth of the history there.

Within easy distance there are some pleasant places to eat or for a drink.

Well worth a visit or even a detour if you are in the area.

Quiet solitude, worth wandering around on your own. When we visited no photos were allowed. Central to the City with many varied eating and drinking areas. Lots of parking

Stunning building with a very interesting history. Free to enter although they do expect you to make a donation. Quite a bit for the children to do too! The cafe just across the way (next to the Bishops House) has a lovely garden to enjoy the odd drink or 2.

A stunning example of a Norman cathedral, and unique in that it has three spires, known as the Ladies of the Vale. The cathedral close is quiet and it also houses a private school, the bishop's palace, numerous houses belonging to the church, and a two cafes/coffee shop and a book shop. Parking is by permit only but there is a public car park very nearby. Both the interior and and exterior are stunning in every respect, but a donation is expected, and certain caretakers on the door can be quite forceful.

Inspiring place to visit. Food available in Cafe?Restaurant at side of Cathedral. I regularly visit. Do pop across the road to the book shop next to which you can access the tranquility of the Erasmus Darwin garden as a bonus, and if it's open get into the house.

Much of the cathedral is Victorian restoration, so it doesn't have particularly interesting windows etc. But the original shape is there, in the original sandstone, and that alone is impressive. The chapter house has some very interesting items, including a small exhibition about the Staffordshire hoard, a fine early statue of the angel Gabriel and a 14c Assumption wall painting, which is very unusual.

Took a walk round the Cathedral one snowy day. Was a very nice Cathedral, nice displays to have a look round. Lit a candle for a small donation, was a nice way to spend an hour

The cathedral is situated near to the centre of town on a hill and set in attractive grounds. Inside it is interesting but I wouldn't say anything outstanding in terms of UK cathedrals. Nearby is a lovely old quarter that is well worth a vist.

Lichfield is easier to byepass, by road or rail, than to visit, but it is worth making a small detour to this lovely old market town, dominated by its red sandstone cathedral. Begun at the end of the twelfth century it seems to echo French Gothic-style with two spires at the west end and a third (the highest) over the transept. The cathedral was repeatedly contested and severely damaged during the Civil War, the central spire was shot away, the cathedral abandoned, roofless. The restored cathedral is spectacular and the three spires (The Ladies of the Vale) are unique in England. Within the cathedral Chapter House try to see the 8th century Lichfield Angel and Lichfield Gospels as well as the Lichfield horde of gold objects found in a field outside the town. The Cathedral Close includes a coffee shop / tea garden (south east corner, toilets adjacent) and book shop (facing the West facade). Contributions to the upkeep of the cathedral are welcome but Lichfield is a welcoming cathedral which does not demand an entrance fee (others should blush).

A stunning building, lots of interesting history helpful guides. The beautiful stained glass windows were magnificent. The statue of Charles 1st on the right hand side of the cathedral is awesome. Amazing cathedral, my wife and I had a fantastic time looking around, well worth a visit, one of those places that fills you with awe and makes you feel tranquil. The Cathedral’s three spires rise from historic Lichfield's centre and can be seen from miles around. Wonderful experience, fully recommended.
