Recently returned from a 4 night Summer Break, principally to celebrate a birthday. A very warm welcome, and wonderful surprises to mark my birthday, thanks to a really special effort on the part of one of the senior hotel managers, Hannah Francis. Very clean and comfortable side sea view bedroom, always kept well supplied with tea, coffee, etc. Useful also to have a small fridge in the room. An exceptionally warm welcome in the lovely, spacious restaurant by the restaurant manager, Rosie, and the breakfast supervisor, Lisa, and always excellent service from ALL the restaurant staff. A superb full English breakfast, and some wonderful desserts on the dinner menu - especially the Eton mess and Chantilly cream filled profiteroles!
The hotel is in a wonderful position overlooking the sea, and has spacious lounges, nice conservatory, and outside patio seating overlooking the immaculate grounds. Nice to have a small outdoor swimming pool and sunbathing area too - shame about the generally cool weather during my stay! Stayed here before the pandemic on several occasions - this was my first visit since the various lockdowns, and I shall certainly return.
Just one minor problem -the TV in my room appeared to require constant retuning (always promptly carried out by hotel staff - but shouldn't, of course, be necessary ). This is the only reason for 4/5 rather than 5/5 for my room rating.
Thank you, Hydro, for a lovely stay and for all you did to make my birthday a memorable occasion.

Very good all round. One of these traditional hotels that has managed to modernise and move with the times. The breakfast experience was especially good. Eastbourne is good for a short stay and this is a great place to base yourself.

I love the views from the garden and from the rooms. The swimming pool is clean and warm. Staff are always helpful but not over attentive. Food is always good as is the menu choices. Have been many times and will always go back.

We have just got back form a 3 night summer break which included breakfast and dinner.
The hotel is in a nice spot on the front, and is easy to find.
The hotel itself is lovely, the rooms are well decorated and are serviced everyday to a high standard.
The meals are superb with plenty of choices.
The staff are always working so hard looking after us, nothing is to much trouble.
I had a couple of little niggles that I reported to reception but not bad enough to put on here.
Would I stay here again? Yes without a doubt.
We where very pleased with our stay at The Hydro Hotel and hope to visit again.
Thank you all for all your hard work keeping us happy.

Home from home hotel. Stayed here several years ago and I’m pleased to report hotel has remained 1st class. Friendly efficient staff from reception to restaurant , stayed in a lovely single room.
Super Breakfast , great traditional service in elegant dining room.
It’s at the Beachy Head end of town and street parking is free and easy, or use there car park.

A lovely hotel with excellent staff and great facilities. It was nice to be given the same table for breakfast and for dinner when we used the restaurant.
The only problem we experienced was when checking out our hotel Invoice showed that we had taken 4 dinners in the restaurant when we had only had two!
Given that we were there for only three nights in total somoni hadn't done their homework! Easily rectified but nevertheless a hassle.
Altogether a very nice stay and at a reasonable rate.

Arrived for one night for a short vacation. The room was average sized, double bed, TV, complimentary biscuits and an okay view showing the room and sea. The bathroom was clean but the shower need more power personally and more height ( I am 6'8). 😃
The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The general customer base is the elderly and more mature setting. Young couples staying might feel abit out of sorts in the crowd but you will feel welcomed
If you are visiting Eastbourne for a short stay, worth a try.

We love this hotel. Would thoroughly recommend. Big and spacious, It has an old fashioned grand hotel feel. It's in a beautiful location, high up looking out to sea. Don't worry if you have mobility problems, the hotel have a direct phone line to a local taxis to take you into town. Added bonus of an outdoor pool, weather permitting. Nice conservatory for a lunch, good breakfast. We did not have dinner in the hotel as very nice restaurants in town.

Stayed here with a friend and her daughter and her daughters friend. We had 3 rooms between us and all good. Nice to have a fan in the room together with a fridge. Rooms cleaned to a high standard. We had breakfast in the Crystal restaurant and dinner in the conservatory, all food was of a very good standard. We found the waiting staff excellent. We didn’t eat lunch here but walking through sandwiches and cream teas looked very good and was busy during the day. The pool area was a real delight with sunloungers and a heated pool. The gardens and views out to sea are stunning and hotel areas inside lovely. I have knocked one star off due to problems with payment. I had paid in full on booking the break, was charged again when checking in which later was refunded when I showed proof. On checking out I was charged yet again but taken off when receptionist realised what had happened. She was apologetic and did say it was a receptionist training error.

We had a 3 night stay dbb. I was surprised to read some of the previous reviews because we had such a good experience with reception, who did indeed tell us where the lift was etc and there were at least 7 waiting staff in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner in the Crystal dining room. The food was lovely, well cooked and tasty. As a suggestion having dinner 3 nights from the same menu maybe a special of the day to give some more variety ? The room was a sea view and we were glad we paid extra for this because it was indeed a lovely view. The room cleanliness was exceptional and we have no complaints at all in this regard. There is a conservatory with tables to eat lunch which is bookable. There are a lot of outside events that take place at the hotel which is not surprising as the hotel is situated near to Beachy Head and there aren’t many venues/pubs that we could see at that end of Eastbourne. We would definitely return.

Not the first impression you expect from a four star hotel. Room was not ready on arrival which we expected as we were early. Filled in paperwork and returned about 5 hours later for our room keys. So two visits to receptions and on both visits no information was given to us about the hotel. No directions to the dining areas, bars or swimming pools. No information on opening times or reservations. Even had to ask for directions to the room and lift, had better welcomes at a premier inn.

Never used the bar or restaurant area during our 3 day visit as we decided after the welcome we received to spend our money elsewhere in town where we were made to feel more welcome.

Pity this trip was let down by the service at breakfast. Appallingly slow to firstly take our order, and then to deliver it. Even the coffee and toast order took 30 minutes to arrive (had wanted it with the plated scrambled eggs…). Second morning the toast was cold, and the plated order completely forgotten until we asked what had happened, and were told we would have to re-order as the first was mislaid. On questioning the waiter explained that he was the only staff member and they were short staffed. He seemed quite stressed. Having paid over £150 for bed and breakfast we expected better than this, and certainly some kind of compensation for having had to sit waiting in the restaurant for over an hour both mornings when we wanted to get out to explore. The third morning we were with the wedding party and when we arrived the tables were full of dirty plates and cups etc and no one showed us where we could sit. Again, very sloppy service, not to be expected at such an expensive hotel.

The staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and helpful. It is a little old fashioned in terms of its decor but it adds to the traditional feel of the place. The food was really good, great breakfast.
To get a 5 I would suggest that they increase the size of the ensuite bathrooms, an extra 1/2m would make a big difference and also, and I know this sounds like a 1st world problem, but I didn't think that the wine and beer selection was very good.
That said, it was a lovely break and I would definitely go back there.

My husband and I spent three days at the Hydro last week. I had been on many previous occasions, when my parents were alive, as I used to bring them down to the Hydro every summer for a holiday. The hotel, I am very thankful to say, has not changed. It still has that wonderful, traditional old English character feel about it. The beautiful décor, the attentive staff and the amazing food, plus the advantage of being in such a wonderful setting overlooking the sea, this makes it a very special place. Many of the rooms (including the one in which we stayed) have been upgraded. We found our (side-sea) room very comfortable and well appointed with complimentary toiletries/hair drier, mini fridge, tea/coffee making facilities and even an ironing board and iron. However, personally the mattress was a little too soft.
As mentioned above, the food (both breakfast and dinner) were delicious with a good choice and excellent service. On some evenings they have a pianist playing during dinner which is a delightful added bonus to the overall ambience.
Although the weather was a little mixed, we were still able to use the heated outdoor swimming pool as it is situated in a sheltered area.
As one of the previous reviews said - I cannot praise this hotel highly enough and we will be back to enjoy the Hydro's superb hospitality again.

We booked for a meal at the Crystal Restaurant for a joint birthday celebration on Saturday lunchtime (31st July). We had such a lovely time and the staff were great and accommodating. The food was also superb. We have been here in the past to celebrate, and have never been disappointed. This year in particular was really important as it is the first big family get together we have been able to have for some time. Being in an environment that is not claustrophobic or feels rushed made it feel even more special. After our meal, we were able to relax with our tea and go outside into the magnificent grounds. Keep up the good work everyone at The Hydro and thanks to your fab staff!
