In the walls of a Saxon Shore Fort built in Roman times, Pevensey Castle is an English Heritage property built on the site of the Norman invasion of 1066. The history of the castle is located in various parts of the ruins with some of the towers open with exhibitions, along with the dungeons and basement. A small shop on site with some refreshments available with an audio tour guide on offer. Car park is nearby which is a pay and display ca park, some of the fee going to pay for the preservation of local buildings.

We stopped here after we drove past nor knowing that it was there and it was a great find. The Roman castle is under the care of English Heritage which is well looked after. We had a stroll around the grounds of the castle which it has taken us less than 2 hours. Also it was great to see that the original moat still exists. The castle it was in ruins for many years so it was good to see that a lit of restoration has happened over the years.

Fabulous Castle, steeped in over 2000 years of English history - from pre Roman times to the 1940s and WW2, when the fortress was manned by the French Canadians in readiness for the planned German Invasion (operation Sealion) which, thankfully, was abandoned by the Nazis.
Excellent exhibitions and dark, dank dungeons provide interest for young and not so young.
The free audio guide provides all the important facts in an entertaining and convenient manner. The admission hut and small shop is well stocked with souvenirs and light refreshments and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable.
A must visit attraction.

A beautifully kept piece of English history. Dating from the 290's and the Romans through William the Conquerer to World War II.

The grounds are extensive and sit between Westham and Pevensey Village.

The audio tour really adds depth to the visit.

The staff are professional, friendly and more than happy to explain the site and also sample the mead in the gift shop.

If you're in the area definitely worth a visit.

Not super exciting, but a decent sized castle and grounds to explore. Not a lot is intact in terms of buildings, so not as interesting as other castles, but holds a lot of history.
