This was another great castle in England. This was a roman fort that William the conquer first visited after he landed in 1066 and spent days and nights there until the the famous and historical battle of Hastings which he needed up winning. Some good displays but the security was very low and people could of snuck in. Overall good day.

Great history! The WWII room was particularly interesting and really well presented. Like most English Heritage places it’s a little overpriced, but it’s hard to begrudge them the money when the building needs so much conservation work. Be aware that it is a tiny ruin with two small exhibition spaces.

Think of the castles in the South East, and it is unlikely that Pevensey will be the first off your lips. Nevertheless, it was here in 1066 that a Norman Duke, known to all and sundry as William the Conqueror first set foot, before defeating King Harold and conquering England. You approach the castle from the High Street in Pevensey, and make your way through the remains of a Roman fort – a very rare survivor. A little further on and you come to a ruined medieval gatehouse, with an attractive, tumble-down appearance. Having bought your ticket, you make your way through the remains of the Norman castle, the first to be built in England. One can usually take the (free) audio guide, which explains the castle’s history in an entertaining way, and is short enough to keep most people’s attention. There are several towers still standing, one of which contains an exhibition of artefacts discovered by archaeologists on site. Another tower contains exhibits on the castle’s role during the Second World War, when (perhaps surprisingly), US and Canadian troops were based here, prior to the D Day landings in 1944. There is even a small dungeon (known as an oubliette) in one of the gatehouse towers, when the unfortunate victim would be thrown (and left). There is a small gift shop, and the guidebook is well worth getting

Visited the castle for an afternoon stroll. Easy parking and quiet enough to socially distance from other visitors. Didn’t go into the inner castle as closed at the time. Think you may have to book.

You can walk through the grounds. At the moment you have to book to enter the inner castle. Would recommend a visit. Some people picnic in the grounds too.

There's not a lot to see but there are some interesting things to see. There's large grounds outside of the castle where you can have a picnic and children can play. Worth a look.

Took our Grandson and our daughter yesterday 20.07.2020. You have to buy tickets on line and get a timed slot. It was well organized. The castle has a fascinating history and we all enjoyed the day very much. The beach is only a short distance away so you can split the day between the two places.

Such a large castle area with Roman walls and a large keep . Great for a picnic on a sunny day . Parking can be difficult in busy times though

Booked on-line (English Heritage members) day before visit, very easy process. Arrived at site and parked in pay & display car park next to site. The grounds are free to enter and you can walk around the extensive outer walls an picnic in the grounds. The ticket gets you into the castle ruins. There was some conservation work taking place, with scaffolding etc, but, this did not detract from the visit. There are two main rooms to go in, one gives a potted history of the site, with timeline from the original Roman settlement to its current state, the second provides details of its role in WW2. Interesting place. Worth a visit.

The man called Philip from English heritage was very nice and helpful, he also had very good knowledge about 1066 and the castle! He was very kind and helped us see what we would like to buy, we had a fantastic time and there where interactive things like telephones that children could answer in the WW2 room and they could imagine they were in 1066 looking over the castle walls waiting for the Normans to arrive! An overall amazing experience and we had a great time, there were lots of interesting facts everywhere and exhibitions! I would thoroughly recommended Pevensey Castle, thankyou Philip and thank you English Heritage!

Shame the Castle was closed, but not much they could do about it with the current state of the world. Hopefully we'll be back once this pandemic is over :)

We have recently joined English Heritage so decided to revisit Pevensey Castle. We used to take our children here when they were younger as they loved to explore the ruins. However it has changed over the past 15 years with the addition of displays and WWII exhibitions.

The tour was quite interesting and the lady in admission centre was very helpful and friendly. The tour around the castle is steeped in history and the views are breathtaking. I live in the area and didn’t know much about it so was glad to learn more about it.

A small ruined castle built by normans and romans back in hundreds of years ago. Not much inside to see but if you are interested in ancient history and architecture. They have illustrations to explain what has happened during the ancient wars and world war 2.
