Roman shore fort dating from 3rd Century. Later reused in Saxon times.

The castle has a fascinating history going back to Roman times, when it would have been surrounded by the sea at high tides. I think it is fair to say that though it was started by Roman knowledge, it was finished by Norman wisdom.

One of my favourite historical castles in East Sussex. An excellent place for walking or even enjoying a picnic in the vast grounds. Folklore says in the dark of night you can sometimes see pirate flat boats floating in the surrounding moat and eerie inexplicable lights appearing from within the ancient castle. A must visit for visitors interested in 1066 history.

A beautiful castle, combining Roman, Norman and later additions. All set in 1066 country. Enjoy!
