Not a huge castle, but a interesting exhibition and walk round the castle. Good visit for about an hour. Court house and gaol in high street is worth combining with castle

This spectacular site, both a Norman Castle and a Roman Fortress, must be one of the premier historical sites in the UK. Soak up the atmosphere.

Parking in the small (I think council owned) car park is £2 for all day. It did look like you could park west of the castle on a surrounding road for free. Next to the car park opposite the Castle tea rooms is the public convenience which were clean. For men you have to see the urinals as they look ancient and made me chuckle. Like roman helmets attached to the wall. Paying entrance is for the inner medieval castle itself and not the surrounding larger roman walls.
There are some steep slippery steps so care should be taken. There is a small kiosk hut which sells gifts as well as your entrance ticket. The audio guide is good and helps understanding the castles history without droning on and getting too boring. As EH members entrance was free to me and my family. Use your Tesco clubcard vouchers to help pay for membership.

It you're expecting armour and weapons, look elsewhere. This is a ruin of a castle with a moat, and a surrounding wall forming an enclosure.
Originally the outer wall was made of wood by the invading Norman army. After the crowning of William the Conqueror, the wooden fort was changed to a stone structure

Lovely walk within the Roman walls, the castle is interesting but is it worth the entrance fee,I think that it is a bit steep, the audio description is very useful but unlike Battle Abbey it doesn't guide you round using number markers,I got confused 😀

If you love history then this site let's you walk in the boots of William the Conqueror. There is a lot to see both inside the inner Bailey and outside. Good tea shops and pubs nearby too

If it's medieval castles your after, and the atmosphere necessary to visualise what life would have been like then. Then this is probably an unsurpassable treat.
