I visited the castle on a bitterly cold day but found the history of it really interesting. Guide books advise 45 minutes to walk around the site but I must have spent closer to 2.5 hours there. The gentleman working at the ticket office / souvenir shop was able to share some interesting facts with me and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio guide. There was also an exhibition of some very interesting artifacts found during various excavations which was laid out over 2 floors in one of the towers.

Although quite an attraction, there are some restorations required. The British Heritage Society manage the castle.
Outer castle free to visit. Inner keep charged for and not open during the winter.

Had a wander around the ruins of Pevensey Castle recently; it was interesting to read about the history of site and an added bonus was being able to take the dog. However, we felt the entry price was fairly expensive for a site that would take about a hour to visit.

I spent 90 minutes in the castle on my visit on 18th February 2018.
It is a ruin and costs £6-90 or free if you are a English Heritage member.
This price includes a free audio guide which does help understand things.
There is no café or toilets at this site but it does have a small kiosk selling souvenirs.
Now a warning - do be very careful when you go down to the dungeon - it is dark and you cannot see the water at the bottom. The unwary will get soaked feet !! - you have been warned !. My friend found this out to his cost last time we visited !.
Do climb up the stairs for good views of East Sussex.
I caught bus 99 from Eastbourne to get here. A bus day pass for the area is £4 or £2-70 for a single ticket.

Not the biggest or most extensive ruins but a good little find on a half day out to Pevensey. The pile of trebuchet balls is most unusual and the small exhibition is very interesting, as is the display of excavations, which consists of a lot of Roman artefacts. Surprising, as the ruins are medieval but nonetheless interesting. You won't spend more than an hour here but it is a great place to visit if you are already in the area.

We didnt actually get into the castle itself. (Check opening hours more carefully than we did.) We did explore the outer area and it proved interesting with extensive ruins. Very impressive

Pevensey is such a gorgeous place, and the castle is lovely. We were so happy to find that dogs are allowed to enter, as we love being able to take our boy to places with us. This was his first castle visit! There’s plenty to learn, and ya a great spot for a nice picnic if the weather permits! Definitely recommend

The grounds inside the outer walls are free to explore. You will find a few good information boards and some good photo opportunities here too. We did not pay the fee to enter the inner walls as we had already spent a lot on English Heritage sites that weekend. We did poke our head in though. The audio guide would probably be quite interesting.

There's also a Tudor gun battery and a WW2 pillbox on the outer walls.

Outstanding history. Unspoilt and utterly unique. Requires an inquisitive mind and imagination. (Children and young people excel here) Don't expect a theme park or 'Disney World' Castle. But enjoy real history and medieval life - warts and all! Not the place for serial moaners!

Not much of a castle left - it's ruins - but it's good to walk around, maybe with a dog, and perhaps eat a packed lunch there. You have a decent view of some surrounding areas, and the old castle gate is worth a good examination.

Mostly ruins, but a castle with lots of history. The audio tour is excellent, but you may need to ask for it.

A nice castle with a story about both 1066 and WWII. An audio guide brings the story to life but there is only a few rooms so it is a place to pop into rather than a day out.
