Went to see this ancient castle recently. It dates back to William the Conqueror so it’s steeped in history.

As a site to visit there’s not really a huge amount to see because most of it is in ruins but nevertheless it’s worth a look if you’re in the area!

Don’t get too excited as it’s a simple walk around a ruined castle and grounds. Lovely location though and a cracking pub nearby so well worth a visit. Have dogs? Can really recommend a dog walk in the rec grounds and fields behind the castle.

Set in vast grounds which are accessible at all times you only need to pay if going within the castle walls. A commentary is available together with a map so you are free to wander around at your leisure. A lot of history is contained within the castle walls from Roman times up to WWll.

Considering the castle survived three major sieges, was abandoned when the sea retreated a few miles, and so now is really quite ruined, this was a most interesting visit. Take the audio tour and discover the fascinating history. Pevensey is famous for being the landing place of William of Normandy in 1066, but was fortified first by the Romans (known as Anderida, around 290 AD until sacked by the Saxons in 490 AD). William set up temporary camp here and then later fortified Pevensey, giving it to his half brother Robert. Pevensey then seems to have a hand in many of the internal conflicts in England for the next five hundred years. Its walls physically survived sieges but the inhabitants on at least one occasion surrendered for lack of food. The audio tour takes about an hour and gives a nice backdrop to the walk round the castle walls. Parking nearby and several places to eat.

Did history at school especially about the Roman Invasion but was surprised to learn that the Normans built the castle first

This is a small ruined castle which would be fine for an hour or two. We went as part of our English Heritage membership. The staff were very helpful and the different areas were educational for our children.

The Castle is certainly worth a visit. Lots of History. It has played a major role in the Second World War, which was a surprise to find out about. Excellent.

It's amazing that you can go right into this stunning castle grounds for free, and only need to pay if you want to get closer and get an audio tour. The audio tour is worth a few pounds, and gave a detailed account of the castle's history. And some nice little pubs outside the grounds.

It’s my first time to Pevensey Castle. I quite like here, it’s quiet. I had a lovely walk there, didn’t go inside the castle cuz £7 is a bit expensive for this small castle. Would like to visit here outside again

Had a lovely few hours. Paid approx £7.50 each and had a free audio tour. The guy working here was polite and friendly (sorry I didn't get his name).

Pevensey Castle is mainly a partially ruined structure but it is full of history with part of the walls built on the old Roman walls.
There is a great place to walk the dog just outside the gates of the castle- a large green surrounded by the walls and also recreational fields adjoining the castle with lots of parking.

On first appearances not a lot to see and do but you are given an audio tour which is excellent. The grounds are large and you can have a good walk. You only have to pay to visit the ruins of the castle not the grounds themselves.

Yet again free for English heritage members. Car park I think was £2 not run by English heritage thou. No on site toilets. Not really that much here but lovely grounds to have a picnic in.

Passed the castle many times , always en route too somewhere else. Made a determined effort to visit on our recent trip to Sussex. Having been told there wasn't much to see , we were mightily impressed. The lady on reception was really helpful and informative, before and after our tour . The tour itself was assisted by the audio guide and we felt that we learned quite a lot from this and the reading as we progressed around the site. The location was fabulous , the day we visited the sun was shining and the sky was blue, so we had a good view of the surrounding area. One can only imagine what it was like in it's working state. But all in LL for us a worthwhile visit

We came across this lovely place accidentally but were very impressed with what we found. It was a great place to wander around and see explore the history. It was originally a roman fort and the remains of this are in evidence everywhere. William the Conqueror used the remains of the roman fortress to build his own fort after the battle of Hastings. The mix of the two eras is very interesting. We spent an hour or so exploring the ground and walking around the outside parts of the castle. You can also pay to enter and visit the inside parts of the fort but we thought we had seen enough from the outside.
