Enjoyed our visit to a little known but vital bit of English history. Well worth a quick visit, even to just look at the outside.

Visited Pevensey Castle on a mini break with my husband. There were more remains than I was expecting and I thought that the audio guide tour was awesome. It had clear instructions, a mix of information relevant to the historic journey of the castle and a number of role plays brought to life with music. It was entertaining and absorbing. The only difficulty we had was that my husband’s audio tour was different containing less detail and a lack of instructions. He would have swapped it had there not been several people booking in to visit at the time. We mentioned it to the operator as we left and she said it might have been an old one and was suitably apologetic.
I lent him mine so he could experience the battlements and be as entertained as I was.
We spent a happy couple of hours exploring the castle and I would thoroughly recommend it if you like castles.

This old castle is located just outside Eastbourne on the road to Hastings.

Old and derelict and full of history and very insightful. It is clearly seen from the main road and worth a short detour. A very educational place to go.

Pleasant morning spent learning all about castles, and the role William the Conqueror had in their building and development.
Very helpful staff, good audio handset.

We thought it was expensive for what was there, the moat was nice. There was a dungeon and gift shop.

Very interesting site. Warm welcome and good information from custodian. Well signed information and easy access to towers.

Far more history to this site than you'd think. Firstly Roman, then Norman and very critical for that, and then lastly used in the second world war! William the conqueror used this as a first base after arriving from Normandy. Still the outer curtain wall standing from Roman times. Worth a visit.

We had a great time and we all learnt a lot about castles and some of our English history. We also took kites with us and had a great time flying them outside the castle. There is a tea room and pubs just outside. Lovely afternoon. Not enough for a full day so would advise going to the battle ground too.

Not the most impressive castle, not very big or interesting, we used the free audio guide, the dungeon area of which is just one small room was flooded with at least 2 inches of water, decided, if you want castles then Wales it is.

We enjoyed walking amongst the castle ruins. Used the Voice recorded gadget to get info as we went round. Small friendly shop.

There's a large Roman wall running outside of the actual castle so you get to see a couple of different eras of history.

The castle is reasonably well preserved and some bits you can go in and other parts just the walls/ruins.

There's a free audio guide which is well worth getting as it explains a lot of the history.

You can also go down into the dungeon.

Another medieval castle and worth a visit accessible paths lead to the main entrance so good to take in all that history. As it was a dry day i found easy to get around in my buggy. The car park is cheap but small. We enjoyed our visit.

Visited here yesterday with our 9 year old daughter. Although the castle ruins are fascinating, and the staff helpful, there is a serious lack of interpretation. Unless you are able to concentrate on the audio guide, (which is very difficult to do with children), there are very few information posts, and no hands on activities as there are with the better known English Heritage and Sussex Archeology sites in the area. Pevensey Castle is full of potential but needs investment!

We went with our nine and five year old to this delightful castle in the afternoon having visited the beach in the morning.

We had an English Heritage pass so had free access to the castle. I would suggest paying for entry as the free audio guides are definitely worth it. My children found them informative as a way of guiding them around the castle.

There is lots of space to have a picnic and relax with the family.

It was very sunny and hot when we visited and there is enough space for shade.

A really interesting castle and worth a visit.

So amazed at the wonderful Roman walls ;at the local museum they explained how it had been a Roman fort right by the sea. How the Normans utilized it and built the keep within. Because we were short on time didn't pay the fee to go into the Norman area.

Get a free audio guide and you will learn a lot about what is on the face of it a fairly brief visit. There isn't much left other than the outer walls, a dungeon and some towers but there is a lot of history to be consumed on this short tour. Recommended for history buffs.

Well worth an hour’s visit if you are in the area and interested in English history. The original Roman outer wall encloses an early Norman castle and the free audio guide adds greatly to the experience of these romantic ruins. There is plenty of room for family picnics on the grass, it seldom gets overcrowded and there are also 3 pubs and a tearoom nearby.

Extensive open area enclosed by Roman walls with Norman keep inside. Played a big role in the initial Norman invasion of Britain.

This is an enjoyable place to visit - we tend to come along on a Sunday afternoon once or twice a year. The information provided is interesting, and clearly presented. On baking hot days, it is just possible to find shade.

Pevensey Castle is insde a Roman wall, built around 290 AD to enclose the settlement of Anderitum, of which the east and west walls remain pretty much intact.

The invading Normans of 1066 built their first fortification here, consisting of a stone fort and keep, and was occupied more or less continuously until the late 16th century. It was later occupied as a garrison for troops from 1940 to 1945 and machine gun posts were built into medieval walls and these can still be seen.

Yes this is a ruined castle but, it is a slice of history. This castle has played an important role in British history and I learnt so much from my visit.

If you want refreshments, I would recommend the castle tea rooms.

Old stone walls where once a beautiful castle stood with a big battle with King Harold and lots of history. A pretty sun over the walls and a pub lays at the bottom of the site.

Seriously interesting. Bit pricy to see the inner bit but worth it. Loads of history inside with pics of how it used to be.

Went for a stroll round the outside as part of a treasure hunt. Huge area to picnic in if wanted. Signs up regarding old gun encampments and the walls.

Worth it for a freebie
