Amazing building, based in Hermonceax, lovely village and no light pollution. Perfect for astronomy.. And i do beleive that this was Sir Patrick Moore's favourite English observatory.. 🔭

The Observatory offers a lot of fun hands on activities for kids to enjoy (and some kids at heart!) - we especially enjoyed The Discovery Park which had some great things to do like a balance board and some "slap drums".

In terms of the domes, we really enjoyed the exhibit on the history of the site and some information boards/artifacts about key discoveries and we both wish there had been more of this!

The telescope talks which are run by a member of staff at regular intervals are not worth it in my opinion. They echo the same information found in the exhibits and the delivery isn't the best/most engaging.

Overall - for the history it was worth a visit, however I thought there would be more exhibits aimed at an older audience than there were. So, I would recommend to families but not necessarily for adults alone!

Took my young family to the science centre on a rainy morning, booking was easy online and we were shown to the disabled entrance, disabled access was over all very good, apart from the disabled toilets having a ‘cleaning in progress’ sign up for the whole two hours we were there, so my husband had to carry our son who is unable to walk Up two flights of stairs to use the men’s toilets. The science centre itself was great lots to do for children even with the two end rooms being closed. They enjoyed it very much, cafe was also very good and reasonably priced gift shop!

Visited here on the Wednesday of our week long stay in the area. The weather was glorious for the time of year and so it was a pleasure to be there and to explore the many fascinating and mostly interactive exhibits on offer. Fun for everyone! Despite COVID restrictions social distancing was both easy and well organised. The history of the site is fascinating as is the impressive refractor telescope that was open to view on the day we were there. Thoroughly recommended as a day out for everyone

We called here as my husband wanted to visit, it was well worth it. There are lots of interactive things to do outside and as adults we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The place is an absolute wealth of information. Definitely worth a visit especially midweek when there are no young families !!!

Totally unexpected we came across the science centre at Herstmonceux when aiming for the castle. We found it very interesting. The Guide explained and demonstrated very well indeed.
The castle is stunning and the first brick built castle in the UK, it has a beautiful moat. The gardens would be interesting to visit at different times of year when we visited the daffodils were beautiful.
The tearooms served tasty and reasonably priced foods and drinks, a visitors centre explains the history of the estate and a small shop contained many gems for sale

An amazing day for a Science school trip. The staff are very knowledgable and have a lot of patience and time for the children. There are so many exhibits to look at - indoor and out. We did a show, which included looking at how a rocket-ship works, how astronauts live and how they over come problems which occur in space; a workshop on ‘robot arms’ which simulate the robotic arms of the space station; and a tour of the telescopes with a very detailed and interesting talk which were all absolutely fantastic. I cannot recommend this place enough, and I will be coming back next year and hopefully we can leave later have more time exploring the indoor science exhibits on forces, which we sadly didn’t have time for.

This is so good. Lots to do and great for any age. My children have always loved it - it’s sort of like a much better version of the Science Museum in London but everything works and is accessible. They also do star gazing evenings through the massive telescopes.

Lots to do outside as well which is really good.

Was a very good day out, much better than expected
We went with my 3 year old son, the outside was full of science and physics based games. The inside filled with sound and more science experiments / activities.
The only reason for 4 stars was the shop seemed very overpriced. £8.50 for a toy space shuttle. I get they need to make money but that seemed excessive

A surprisingly excellent day out.
Lots to do and see and ideal for taking a visiting tourist.
The place reeks of history and they have made a clear effort to remain family and child friendly.
Inexpensive and authentic.

We had a lovely time. My 5 year old loved all the experiments etc. However we were disappointed with the cafe. The website clearly states in the covid section that it is open for food and drink but we got there just after 12pm expecting to at least get a Sandwich for lunch but they only had crisps, chocolate and snacks. No actual meals.
