Duke of Richmond Hotel

Our first holiday for two years and following advice of Consultants not to travel too far we chose Guernsey. With an array of hotels in travel brochures and on many websites we were somewhat confused but found the Duke of Richmond, although Four Star we were still uncertain whether we would cope with a Boutique Hotel.

With many questions we felt a telephone call would not go amiss but we need not have worried as all of our concerns were allayed with the help of the receptionist, answering all of our questions, ringing back then confirming our booking by email including a lengthy Preference Form to complete, seeking from the very start to welcome, help, and ensure an enjoyable stay.

The room was superbly decorated with every facility anyone could wish, including daily bottled water, fresh Guernsey milk upon request, a fridge and air conditioning at the touch of a button. The location was excellent being a short walk to St Peter Port Marina’s although a more challenging uphill return or even a pleasant walk through Candie Gardens.

If considering staying any length of time you should not be put off by the Leopard Restaurant Menu on the website, as extensive as it was, as there is also a Blackboard of Specials of the Chef’s Selection every day with fresh fish, local produce, at least four starters and four choices for the Main Course plus a variety of salads and mouth watering sweets. The breakfast menu was also superb with a multitude of cereals, fresh fruit and juices, continental, pancakes, waffles, omelette to a truly full English breakfast.

We could not have possibly asked for more from the “Team” of Staff, ensuring our every need was met, a lovely personal welcome and a hand written card welcoming us placed in our own room. They could not have made our stay more enjoyable, so caring an attitude all of the time, the warmth always conveyed and a genuine concern that all our needs were met was a joy to behold.

With a late afternoon flight home we just managed to squeeze in an Afternoon Tea, a very special treat, so enjoyable but not quite able to finish, fear not scones and cakes were carefully packed for our homeward journey. The Customs Officials took great interest in the Red Carnation package, passing round to other officials, leaving the cream on the cakes somewhat squashed but surviving well and enjoyed on arrival at home.

The final message from the Hotel was a hand written card wishing us a pleasant and safe onward journey and looking forward to welcoming us back in the near future - something we must try to ensure happens ...

This was a last minute holiday booking and how lucky were we to pick this hotel out of the few on offer. The staff were really helpful from the minute we got there till the minute we left. Service throughout our stay was really good

We have stayed here for a three night family break every year for the last three years during the summer. The hotel has a fabulous luxury chabbi chic feel, the staff are wonderful and very friendly but extremely professional. The location of the hotel is close to a lovely quiet secluded open park area on the edge of town yet only a 10 min casual walk into the hub of the night life of St Peters Port.A stay is highly recommended.

I stayed for four nights in August whilst on a business trip.
Everything from the room (107) to both food in the restaurant and by room service to the friendly staff was of the highest quality.
The choices at breakfast were wide ranging and dinner was equally as impressive.
The room had everything you could have wished and a particular mention must be made of the bath robes which were of the highest quality and actually fitted!
I found all of the staff members to be extremely helpful and friendly.
The location was good, away from any noisy areas but near enough to the town centre to walk back from although it is an uphill walk.
I shall certainly be returning.

We cannot praise this hotel highly enough and are grateful that they made our stay so special. It truly was a trip to remember, and for all the right reasons. We enjoyed some unexpected anniversary treats, our room was wonderful in every way (turn-down service each evening was a nice touch). Not only that, but very single member of staff was professional, yet exceptionally kind and friendly. The uphill location may be a bit of an issue for some guests, but it was great for us as it was quiet and tranquil, yet within minutes of the town centre, which had all the hustle and bustle we could wish for. The location also gave us some sea views, as well as a chance to walk off some of the big breakfasts we enjoyed every morning! Sure, the weather could have been better (we would have liked to use the sun terrace and pool), but it didn't spoil our stay at all and we will simply hope for some sun next time; we cannot wait to return to the Duke of Richmond.

We spent four days at the Duke of Richmond with friends and can't praise the hotel enough. We had the upgraded room offer via the internet and delighted to say upgraded to a king size room. The breakfast was delicious and offered a great choice and recommend the omelettes. We ate in the hotel on the first night and could not fault the menu choice, wine choice and quality of the food. The lamb in particular was exceptional. The service throughout our stay was excellent and all the staff we encountered were friendly and attentive. We have stayed in other Guernsey hotels but on our next visit will be returning to the Duke of Richmond.

Have just returned from a three night stay at the hotel over bank holiday weekend, family of 4 (children 5 & 1yrs).
I cannot fault the hotel at all, all the staff were so accommodating & friendly. They made such a special effort with my daughter (5yrs) with a special check-in, arranged a movie night for her, cupcake decorating class and room service delivered her favourite drink to our room, 10 minutes after arriving! Very impressive.
The hotel is lovely decorated, very clean & well maintained. Our room was a superior room, which was really big even after accommodating a travel cot & double pull out bed.

Breakfast was lovely with options of cereals, fruits, breads & croissants etc juices & smoothies and hot options of full English breakfast/ pancakes or waffles, served in the lovely conservatory or the terrace if the sun's out.

Briefly used the pool, which again was lovely just a shame the weather wasn't nicer otherwise we would have enjoyed this space more.

Hotel's location - 15 mins from town (cost £12 in cab), 10 minute walk to the start of town. Hotel is situated right near Candie gardens.
We received lots of special treats also as it was out wedding anniversary but don't want to spoil it for others.

Didn't get time to experience afternoon tea unfortunately but it looked amazing! And we can highly recommend Sunday lunch (£21.95 for 3 course).
Really loved this hotel & will definitely return in the future. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so special 💞

We visited the Duke of Richmond Hotel for an informal family gathering one Saturday. We had exclusive use of the Residents Lounge, which provided a stylish setting. The staff were very attentive and helpful, allowing us to move the furniture around to suit our needs. We were only there for drinks and didn't stay at the hotel, so can't comment much further. But I would certainly stay at the hotel on future occasions. There is a lovely sun terrace providing sea views, and the swimming pool looked inviting.

We stayed for four nights and were extremely pleased with the everything from the welcome on arrival to the personal introduction to the chef and the excellent room. The service was excellent - very engaging young staff for which nothing was too much trouble and their determination to ensure we had the best time was obvious. Going back again next week ....

my wife and I stayed at the DOR for 4 nights we had a room with balcony and sea view (room 202) we did not expect much of a view being so far from the coast but were pleasantly surprised being able to not only see the bay but also a very good view of herm island (weather permitting) through a surrounding area of trees which parted conveniently so not to block the view.
also not mentioned in the room details there was a fridge in our room just right in the hot weather.
we decided to catch the bus from the airport thinking this was a good way to first see parts of the island and at £1 for any journey you can't go Wrong.
the hotel is only about 1/2 a mile from the terminus, but is only for the fit, not like myself, it is all up steep hills and I would recommend taking a taxi if you have cases.
the staff at the hotel were very pleasant and polite nothing was too much trouble for them, even insisting on carrying our drinks from the bar to the restaurant when we were seated, a special mention for Orlando Abreu Food and Beverage Manager a very kind man and Tipi one of our very helpful waiters and waitresses'
the food was incredible and everything was presented in a very high standard also each day there was a selection of specials so never dull
prices both in the restaurant and bar were competitive with the town..

sadly our last night did not go as well, through no fault of the hotel or its staff I must say, but we had a couple in the next room playing music so loud that first of all we could not hear the TV in our own room and then they insisted playing this music until 2am in the morning from there balcony, not good if you have an early morning flight or just would like peace and be able to relax every body is entitled to enjoy their holiday but not at the expense of everyone else, the problem was resolved finally by the hotel.

Despite this I would not hesitate to book here again or recommend to my friends

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst visiting relatives on the island. The hotel is well situated at the top of the hill out of St Peter Port and is about a 15 minute walk into town. Definitely try and book a sea view room as they are very peaceful and have views out across the bay and towards Herm. We had a very quirky room with jazzy black and white prints and a funky blue light in the bathroom! Room and bathroom were both very clean and well stocked - bottled waters, toiletries etc. The staff here are all super; any query or request was rapidly dealt with and resolved and they seem to genuinely want you to have the best stay you can.

The Leopard bar and restaurant provided a delicious meal one evening with an open kitchen so you can see the chefs hard at work. Cocktails are also incredible but quite costly! The breakfast is excellent with a great choice of hot options including omelettes, pancakes, smoked salmon and the traditional cooked breakfast. Your choice is cooked to order and served at your table which is so much nicer than simmering buffer options! There are really nice touches like complimentary bottles of water and towels to take out if you go for a run or walk, fresh coffee and take out cups in reception and jelly beans!! There is a heated outdoor pool but sadly our weather didn't let us try this. Parking is limited but St Peter Port is very tight for parking. The hotel has 5 spaces but they are on a first come first served basis. Roads nearby provide free parking but get your times right or you'll end up with a parking ticket...

Overall a very good hotel with superb staff and a very good choice of rooms. We booked a 3 night for the price of 2 offer which made the room pretty decent value. Recommended.

My wife & I checked into "The Duke" for one night, with dinner, an upgraded room (the Duchess Suite) and breakfast included, for our 1st wedding anniversary. What a weekend! Excellent service, marshalled brilliantly by Orlando & his wife Olga. Superb facilities. Would we repeat next year? Certainly.

We had a very pleasant few days at this hotel. The service was brilliant and the staff were very informative about the island. Rooms were beautifully decorated and had everything needed for our stay.
The town of St Peter Port was a five to ten minute downhill walk from the hotel......we walk quite quickly......bit longer going back up.
Breakfast was good but I did feel the buffet part could have had more choice of fruit and I would have liked some bread rolls.
Evening meals were good but the menu did not change and even the specials were the same so we ate out after the first two nights.
Only negative was that I would have liked to have been offered a drink on arrival. Iced tea is available in reception but as newly arrived guests it is not obvious.

Our first visit to Guernsey and we certainly chose the best hotel. After a five hour delay we had such a lovely welcome, and an upgraded room that after a couple of drinks in the bar we were ready to enjoy our weekend. At breakfast Olga looked after us And continued to do so for the rest of our stay. We had an excellent dinner at the hotel and wonderful breakfasts every day, can't praise the hotel and staff enough.

Just returned from this wonderful hotel. All the staff are very helpful & friendly. The restaurant staff work extremely hard & nothing is too much trouble. Olga especially deserves a mention. She works so hard, keeping the restaurant running smoothly.
Our bedroom was on top floor overlooking Candie Gardens & had a great view of the harbour.
Bathroom was very modern & clean. Housekeeping staff work very efficiently to keep the room clean.
Well done to all.

We chose this hotel because of the reviews on trip advisor and were not disappointed. The room was a decent size at the front of the hotel with no street noise.
The staff were all very good, friendly and made our stay. The restaurant was excellent for breakfast, we had dinner twice, something we rarely do at hotels, so it must be good.
The hotel is about a 10 Minute walk into town, the walk back is all uphill but did not bother us.
Would highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is about 10mins walk up the hill from St Peter Port. It can be quite physical for some. On arrival we were told that parking is limited and may have to find on-street parking nearby. We were upgraded to a King room which was very nicely decorated as with all the rooms there. Room is on the small end of spectrum. It has air-conditioning and the usual 4-star equipment (kettle, hairdryer, slippers). The only issue is it does not have a fridge. Bathroom is modern and shower is hot with good pressure. Breakfast was included in the package - it composes of continental breakfast and you could also on top have a full English breakfast, omelette, or waffle/pancake (both of which I don't recommend). So lots of choices for the first meal but the quality is not spectacular. Staff were really nice and professional. Overall it is a classic, nicely decorated hotel.

From the friendly greeting on arrival to the spacipus and excellently pointed room this is a must stay and we certainly hope to return The decor is bold and clearly from the designer collection and the breakfast is really excellent, served in a stunning conservatory which sits above the pool area Just a short walk to town and with everything you want in a room it was one of the highlights of our holiday

One of the best hotels I've ever stayed. I usually never stay in luxury hotels but the fact that my company allocated me at The Duke was a great pleasure.
The staff was great and really knew how to offer the service you would expect.
Breakfast and dinner were fantastic and of great quality and variation. Must stay when in Guernsey!

So we booked a Double Room with sea view. On arrival we were given a lovely room but oh so tiny.....I did not feel I could live in such a tiny room for four days and asked if they could do something. We were very prepared to pay to upgrade and I have to say Ben on reception went out of his way to help us. We moved to a King Room on the fourth floor which was delightful. Unfortunately we could only stay in that room for two nights as the hotel was fully booked. However, there was a suite we could move to after two nights which we could have at a good rate. We did not need a suite but understood the problems and so agreed to move after two days and pay the upgrade. It was a shame we had to move as we loved the King Room (409) it was comfortable, quiet and had everything we wanted.

Two days later we moved to the suite.....119. That's when it went down hill, the bed was not as comfy, the duvet was not as nice. The shower was not as nice as the King Room, this room was very noisy, there was always a background noise somewhere. Something we had mot experienced upstairs. I know it is all a matter of choice and others might have found it lovely. I can only speak of my experience.

The Restaurant.........good in some parts, rubbish in others......

Lots of choice for breakfast, but unfortunately the eggs were always overcooked. My Husband had a mushroom omelette but it looked like a Fritata when it arrived. I had a fried egg but it had sat under the hot light so long before being served to me, the yoke was extremely overdone. I was offered another one but by that point I was bored with waiting. The restaurant has the potential to be fabulous, but there is something very wrong. One suspects it's the management rather than staff. One evening my husband ordered a vegetable with his main course but it never did arrive. We had room service one evening and the wonderful soup I had on the first evening, the second time I ordered it tasted completely different. Clearly no consistency.

The staff........fabulous, wonderful, friendly, cannot do enough for you........

Swimming pool.........make sure you bring your swimming things, it's not to be missed .

Our main grouse is on our penultimate day, at 6.46am there was a terrible noise, we never did find out where it came from. One hour later there was another terrible din, just like lots of furniture was being moved about. Never found out what that was. Then to crown it all the smoke alarm went off ten minutes later. By that time we got up and went to have breakfast. We did not bother with the cooked bit, we could not be doing with it.

On our last evening with the door shut to the terrace as it was raining at about 5pm, the terrible smell of cooking came up.....now our 'Suite' was above the restaurant, no guesses from where the smell came from. We went out for dinner on our last night and on our way out my husband complained about the smell. On our return at 8.30pm I heard the Lovely lass on reception call the duty manager to tell him of our return. At 10pm the duty Manager reeking of smoke knocked on the door. I was not impressed........and was not prepared to discuss our concerns. I was undressed and ready for bed, I had no wish to discuss the room at this time.

Would we return, probably not. If you get a good room then you might get a different experience and had we stayed in 409 we would probably not be so dissatisfied. Of course, it is all a matter of taste and choice.

The Hotel is quirky and beautiful in a quirky way. The staff are fabulous. Some of the rooms are fabulous. The restaurant in my opinion leaves a lot to be desired.

Breakfast this morning as we prepare to leave was a complete success..........so not all bad just inconsistent.

After 12 months I returned again to the DoR. The welcome in the reception was warm and dedicated, I got my favourate room in the 4th floor. A first walk downtown showed that nothing really changed during the past year. In the evening, after I entered the bar everybody recognizing me gave me a hug and I got the feeling of comming home. Olga and her team were fantastic during my whole stay which lastet three weeks. I had a wonderful time and enjoyed the perfect service of everybody. The cleanness was good as always and especially the turn down service was highly appreciated. I look Forward to return next year.

The hotel staff couldn't do enough for you.
I loved all the little extra touches that made our stay so comfortable and enjoying. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The hotel is situated beside a small park in a quiet location. Staff were very polite and attentive. Menu choices were varied and would suite most tastes. The bedrooms were well proportioned and comfortable. A room safe, and tea/coffee making facilities were provided. The conservatory and outside dining areas were attractive and popular. The only downside was they only had five allocated parking spaces.
